I've never visited the Moog Factory in Asheville, North Carolina, but can definitely vouch for the online Moog shop. The latest t-shirt order I received was actually a birthday gift. The t-shirt is both colorful and well designed. The item was shipped promptly and was wrapped in paper with the Moog logo printed on it. Years before this, when I placed a different order for another t-shirt, I also found the service to be high quality. We just happened to be driving by when we spotted The Moog store in Asheville. My son is a big fan of music, and had been eyeing the Moog Grandmother for a long time, so we definitely stopped in. The staff were super friendly, knowledgeable and answered all my son's questions. They even lent my son a guitar while we were in the store, so he could plug up and try out the different synthesizers. It was fun also to play around with the keyboards. read more

One of the top things that my brother wanted to do while visiting Asheville was visit Moog Music. Since I'm a fan of synth music and kind of scientifically brained, I was pretty pumped as well. Moog Music is a combination store and factory which hosts free tours of their facilities. The factory is named after Bob Moog, one of the earliest founders of the synthesizer. The tour started in the factory store where there were a number of synths on display. We then went into the factory where we saw the production of synths in action. All the while, we learned a lot about the history of Moog, synths, and the assembly of the instruments. I was really impressed with my entire experience - as much as a synth fan as I am, I never knew of the history and all the mechanics involved in constructing the instrument. I also need to give it up to the staff. Moog is an employee-owned business and you can tell everyone working there is really dedicated to carrying on Moog's legacy. Overall, if you're into synths, mechanics, or music in general I definitely feel it's worth a stop at Moog. Even if you don't want to do the tour, take some time to explore the shop and play a little tune. read more

As a lover of old analog synthesizers I was in heaven at the Moog Music shop/factory. We stopped in to take the factory tour, but unfortunately they were "short of staff" that day, but we were warmly greeted by a nice gentleman by the name of Jim. Jim let us enjoy the various synths on display and gave us a very detailed history of Bob Moog's inventiveness and creations. He demonstrated the large modular synth that was a duplicate model the Moog built and sold to Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake and Palmer fame. Jim and his coworker were lamenting the fact that the modular was being shipped back to Gene Stopp's estate. Gene was Keith Emmerson's synth tech back in the day...interesting stuff! Also learned that Bob never patented anything; from the iconic "ladder filter" to the pitch and modulation wheels seen on nearly every keyboard synthesizer today. It was a fun discussion with Jim, and even my wife who is normally intimidated by musical instruments with lots of knobs and buttons enjoyed playing the synths on display! I own their FANTASTIC Sub37 and want more!!!! Thanks for the nice experience, Moog. I'm glad we could visit before the company production gets shipped off to China. Having been here back in 2022 as well, we were happy to be able to come back in 2023 and take the factory tour which had been suspended due to Covid. In its place they did do a presentation detailing Bob Moog's beginnings and discussing some of the first instruments, such as the theremin and modular synths. The store itself is fun to hang out in as well. They have numerous synthesizers, their own but also some other brands, and other things for you to try out. The kids all had a good time trying various things out, and my synth loving husband thoroughly enjoyed himself too. The factory tour is really neat. It's a bit like that show "How Do They Do That?" where you get to see how various things are built from the ground up. Fascinating for everyone, kids included, to see where some of the things that show up on store shelves come from. The tour starts out in the store with the presentation about Bob Moog as they did during the pandemic as well, and then moves through the factory where you can see various instruments being built at various stations. If you are a fan of musical instruments, or electronic music, or technology, or frankly anything related, this is a definite stop if you're in the area. First, there's no cost to come into the store, just in case you were wondering. Second, the staff is extremely helpful and polite, and you can tell they're all musicians. While we didn't take a factory tour, we did play with virtually every synthesizer in the place - with the included headphones, so you're not disturbing everybody - yes and it was quite the treat. As a synthesizer nerd, it's great to try out these instruments before buying them, as well as just understanding how they work and the types of sound design you can do on them. Lastly. I emailed and was made to feel very welcome not only by email, but in person as well. This was something I set up because Husband really wanted to do it. Thinking I was just going along and expecting to be bored, I was instead fascinated and totally enthralled. Our tour guide could not have been more knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic. Took us all around this Moog plant that is the only one of its kind in the world. To see the folks hand-building everything, from little ones to great big ones, is so fascinating! And to hear about the history of the company and its founder is also very interesting. Love that the company is now employee-owned. Highly recommend for anyone who has any interest in music history! So so rad! The Moog HQ space is a combo shop and factory and it's cool as hell. The shop carries sweet Moog merch like t-shirts, sunglasses, and pens, but also stuff for music geeks like albums, books, tech items, and a few Moog made synths themselves (small ones. For larger ones I believe you need to custom order from them). They also have a few of the larger synths and theremins that you can play with right there in the shop. I'd always been curious about theremins and I spent a good chunk of time messing around with it. It's not complex but it's very sensitive and I created nothing more than a few random tones and sounds but it was so cool to give it a go. Need help? Ask the amazingly friendly staff and they'll lend you a hand. Or just chat them up and geek out over some music. The factory piece is also pretty great. Moog offers several free tours throughout the day, you just have to sign up with them ahead of time. My husband has played in several bands in the past and we're both big ol' music geeks so we decided to sign up for the tour. Totally worth your time! They start out by showing you how the synths work, talk about the history of the brand, etc. It really helped me, a non-musician but a huge fan of Moog created tunes, understand how they create what they do with their machines. They take you through the entire process and show you how several of the machines are made...all of which are done by hand! You'll also get some cool music history and trivia along the way (ask them about Stevie Wonder's massive wall of synth!). All the staff members we encountered were knowledgeable and eager to chat, despite the fact that their work gets interrupted several times a day by these tours. We visited Moog today and took a tour. Fascinating history of electronic music and Bob Moog's role in pushing the technology forward. Paul demonstrated the important parts of the modular synth and the MiniMoog, then took us around the factory to show how the synths are made. He made the history come alive, discussing the ways Moog made the synth as expressive a musical instrument as a flute or sax. Plus we got to play with all the synths on the showroom floor! I'm not into bleep bloops. Synths. What have you. Do I like the music they make? Oh hells yes -- but when it comes to the actual instruments and doodads that make the noises my interest piques most days at apathy. That said, Moog Music is great. Tours happen twice a day and are free. Yup, that is right -- FREE. Just call or email ahead of time and they will get you on the list. You'll start out in the store/showroom, and have the ability to play with basically every current item they make. The theremin was my favorite -- but there was plenty of knobs and dials to fiddle with and have fun, even for those who don't care like me. From there they take you to the back where you see where they make them, test them,pack them, ship them, etc. You get a nice history of the company and the tour guides are super friendly, knowledgeable, and will answer any question you may have. My fiance loved every minute we were there. An easy 5 stars for him, but for someone like me? Who only really appreciates the end results? I really liked it here too. I was so impressed by our tour guide, he had an encyclopedic knowledge of both the founder and the generations of products he spawned. Our Seattle daughter gave us the head's up on the tour, she was tuned into the very recent Moog Fest, which I heard was tremendous. I had a hard time finding info about the Moog Music "museum" on my visit to Asheville - so I am going to post the info I have here. First, there seem to be two locations - one in downtown Asheville and one somewhere else nearby. If you are in downtown Asheville, you want the location on Broadway (this one). It's basically the Moog factory where instruments are assembled, along with a store that is open to the public. The store has 6-7 instruments you can try - all keyboards with Moog effects devices connected to them. The highlight for me was the theramin that was on display, which is set up for people to play with. There are also Moog branded t-shirts, notebooks, mugs, chocolate bars, etc. The assembly space was not open to the public when I was there. I didn't ask for a tour. The shop space takes about 5 minutes to see (it's just one room) unless you want to spend more time playing with the instruments. I couldn't find any info on the Moog websites about tours or a museum, and when I called the phone number listed, it was disconnected. Hope that helps future visitors. Wowee, Moog!! Visiting the marvelous Moog headquarters was the highlight of my trip to Asheville. Although I didn't take the official tour, just being on the hallowed grounds of this synth Mecca was enough to make me feel like a kid visiting Santa's workshop. Even the exterior, with its massive modular window overlay, was something exciting to see. And the store! Aagh! Theremins, keyboards, and other goodies all available for hands-on testing. Not only can you play with it all, you can take it home, too! If you're on a musicians budget, they also have great tshirts and other super swag to show your synth support. In my opinion, the tour of the factory -- just blocks from the downtown Asheville hot zone -- is a must-do. Just so much to soak in even for the most casual of modern music fans. The tour foreplay is diddling around with Moog gear in the showroom. Much fun. If you can't get a satisfying woop-woop or a wicked synth bass line going, you have zero funk, soul, life, etc. Hell, just shoot for 50s sci-fi soundtrack sounds and be thrilled. The tour itself will be about 45 minutes and conveys just how unique Moog is in an age of digital, mass produced everything. The synths are still analog, hand-built, hand-tested -- with a remarkable amount of locally-sourced parts, right down to the wood side panels. (Yep, wood. On a synth. In 2014.) The only downside is the odd heat that wells up in the showroom and the extreme likelihood that some EDM poser douche-bag will be part of your tour-group. Thankfully, the Moog folks seem to be used to this threat, to the point of being willing to boot particularly noxious examples of the breed from the tour. As a part of my wife and I's 15th anniversary be decided to go to Moog and check out all their synthesizers. I feel that this is a layer of Heaven that's not mentioned and any holy text. They gave us a demonstration of the synthesizers which I've never been given before as a rookie. It was nice to see the process from stage one all the way through to where they deliver. There was a time when our tour guide said that famous musicians come in from time to time and recreate their songs on a Moog synthesizer. I would definitely go here again. read more

Well as a huge fan of Moog Synth this was a blast! And a Mecca for music! The history of rock music changed in the late 60's when the Moog was introduced into popular music.. For most it was the use of it on Abbey Road by the Beatles or those crazy Moog synth albums doing Beethoven. Anyway I love Moog synth and actually have a Baby Fatty which I first played here! At the Moog Music store and factory! I loved that it so hands on and you can play anything.. Try your hand (get it) at a Theremin, or many of the Moog Key synth they have for your messing around pleasure! ZOMG, we were walking towards green life grocery when I saw the big mural of a keyboard which I thought was cool. Then I realized it was a moog store, which became a realization that this was the factory! The store is awesome, my kids loved playing the Theremin and various synths and drum pads. I got a shirt and was very tempted to buy a Sub 37. Ended up signing up for 10:30 tour the following morning. My kids 7 & 8 loved it. It's great to see electronics being built in America by people, not machines. What a great surprise to find on vacation. They should promote it more. read more

Tour the Moog factory! It's fun! Moog changed the world of music with his synthesizers. The Moog company is 100% American and 100% in Asheville. Even if you don't play music you'll have a good time and learn some interesting things about the innerworkings of music and recording - like how Quincy Jones and MJ auditioned over 200 bass sounds for the track Billy Jean, winding up using two Moog synthesizers and an electric bass. Maybe you'd be more interested to know that Beyonce's Moog is purple... or that Jay Z has left one in the Moog shop for about a year and hasn't paid his repair bill :-( NAH! You can play with synths and theremins (that was Bob Moog's first product, a theremin kit) in the music store up front then take a tour at 10am or 3pm (call ahead, it's free) and they'll show you how they make 'em in the factory. Tours are given twice a day (10am and 3pm); you just have to call to reserve a spot, using the number listed on their web site. We had no problem setting up a same-day tour (FREE) and got good parking information from the person I spoke to. We arrived a few minutes early and had time to play all the equipment set up in the showroom (with headphones, so no one will hear the terrible sounds produced by a first-time theremin player!). The tour itself takes about 30 minutes and leads you through the workshop where ALL of the Moog instruments are produced and serviced (Jay Z's keyboard was in for repairs the day we were there). You also get to see some development areas where older instruments are played and newer ones are developed. While this is not somewhere you'll spend the day, we definitely enjoyed an hour there and had fun getting an inside look at some of the most defining musical instruments of the digital age. read more

We were wandering aimlessly downtown, just about to turn around and walk in the opposite direction, when we noticed the sign. Just visible down the hill, we weren't sure- could it be? Let's go check it out. Walking closer, we saw we were right. It was the Moog Factory, and we were standing right in front of it. We started taking pictures and acting totally normal.... Walking inside, we spoke with a very nice guy about a tour- which unfortunately we missed. We could, however, play around with a variety of Moogs and keyboards to our heart's delight. Went into this tour with no awareness of Moog Music or synthesizers, and left feeling incredibly educated! When you first walk into the lobby/store front, there are tons of synthesizers for you to try, which our group of 30 college students loved! Our guide gave us an extensive and incredibly interesting background of this history behind both Moog Music and the Synthesizer. We were then able to enter the back where the factory is and see these instruments come to life! An unexpected gem. read more

I thought this tour was very interesting. I thought it was interesting how they had some instruments out on the floor, so while you are waiting to go on the tour, you can play and listen to the music you are "creating". The man that gave our tour was super nice and provided great information. I thought it was interesting how they show you how each keyboard is made. You do not always get many opportunities to be shown all the steps and factors that go into making these instrument. Watching all the employees work as we took the tour, was very interesting as well, because they seemed like they really enjoyed where they work and what they are doing. I do not know how to play an instrument nor do I have any interest in learning how to play, but it was definitely an experience you do not want to miss out on. read more

My wife and I took the very intriguing Moog Factory Tour while visiting Asheville, NC. This was a great 90 minutes and was the highlight to a fantastic 5 day trip to Asheville. As an engineer, musician and former technician for Dr. Robert Moog (in Western NY), I loved this experience. My wife is none of these things and yet she absolutely loved this tour. It was a great experience seeing first hand a company that is almost 100 strong having a dedication to producing ultra-high quality analog instruments as envisioned and designed by Dr. Moog and still have a large place in the musical landscape. We witnessed up close and personal view of handmade instruments being made with total reverence to the original analog designs and sounds. Our guide, Paul (Moog Store Manager) was very knowledgeable and led a wonderful tour. We had plenty of time to play with the models (Synths and Theremins) in the store before and after the tour. I would highly recommend this tour and visit to anyone, technical or not, musical or not. read more
