The reason for the five stars is due to Julio. He's the one that took us around in the golf cart and helped us pick out the best plants. Also, a couple of our plants we recently bought and planted died. With all of the heat and plant shock. There is a 90 day replacement guarantee and Julio responded right away with new plants. I am happy other people had a good experience with Moon Nurseries, mine has been terrible. I went to the nursery to purchase some trees and was taken around by golf cart and made my purchase. Paid the crazy delivery and planting fee (no it is not free unless you buy HUGE trees). Was hoping I would get great nursery stock for the price, and just as great customer service. The trees arrived and were planted, and within minutes of the truck leaving I looked at my magnolia and it was COVERED in scale and white fly. I immediately called, was told that it should never have been planted and they would give me a spray to treat it. Eventually, they agreed to replace it along with my tangelo tree that had leaf miners. I had to wait a month with diseased trees until they were replaced. They did drop off a spray for me to use, it had no effect. The second magnolia tree they dropped off had the same issue, but they told me it had been sprayed and the new growth would be fine. Not so. Now that are telling me to get up into my tree and wipe off the scale and flies. Seriously? I have since spoken to several other nursery workers at other facilities, and apparently the nursery is known in the industry to have shady business practices. I wish I would have known this before I spent thousands of my hard earned money. I also called their corporate offices and left a message and sent a detailed email of my experience. Crickets. Very disappointing experience. Buyer beware. read more

I purchased an avocado tree from the Flinn Springs location in El Cajon for $1500. They said they would take care of it for 1 year and assured me it would grow and look fabulous. This was a huge waste of money. You can purchase an avocado tree that is the same height at Home Depot for $120. read more

World class, friendly service from the moment we entered. We were greeted by Bryan Freytag who was a super down to earth guy and made us feel extremely welcomed. He gave us a tour on a golf cart of the beautiful and giant nursery, showing us everything imaginable. Moon Valley Nurseries truly has a selection like no other nursery we've ever been to, especially when it comes to bigger palm trees. We had lots of questions, and Bryan patiently answered them all. Ryan Ensured that we had a scheduled appointment. Jerrod Jerabe, MVN Certified Arborist was professional. He gave us a 30 min. courtesy call when he was enroute to our home. Jerrod greeted us in a friendly professional manner. He listened to our concerns and addressed every question we had without rushing us to get to his next appointment. He was thorough with the procedure and went the extra mile. Jerrod recommended a soil moisture tester and product for treating the bug issue. He even invited us to call with any additional questions. I purchased a fruitless mulberry tree recently after doing extensive research on trees that thrive in this area. I have always gone to Kniffing's nursery as it is family owned and reasonably priced. I decided to give Moon Valley a try as they are a juggernaut in the nursery industry. I paid a thousand dollars for a tree that was about 4-5 years old, and left with the confidence that I would have my backyard shade tree. They said it would take a week to deliver, which I though was a long time as we are literally up the street. It ended up taking 10 days and one day it was just in my backyard when I got home. NO CALL, NO EMAIL, NOTHING... they entered my backyard while I was at work, going through TWO GATES and left it sitting on my turf. When I got home, I immediately put it in the ground with local dirt (as they instructed). The tree looked sad when it was delivered. Almost as if they had taken it off the lot when we bought it and put in in some container for the 10 days before it got to us. The very next day it started losing leaves. It is now almost completely bare, and Moon Valley is taking ZERO responsibility. In fact, they said they could send someone to look at it, but it would cost me $50 to do so. Mind you, I live up the street. What a terrible place to do business. Some places get too large and lose touch with customer service. This is definitely one of them. They have completely lost my business, as well as anyone in my family. I will continue to share my story with my large network of East County natives who were not upset when they took over in the first place. Support local, support family owned, and don't let these money hungry businesses take over. read more

My husband and I have been wanting a tropical landscape for our home and one Saturday went and visited Moon Valley nursery in El Cajon. We met James M. as soon as we parked. He showed us the palm trees that we were interested in. He made the process easy, marked the plants we picked and scheduled our delivery/planting date. James M. came out to our home to mark where the plants would be planted and answered all our questions that came up in the meantime. Super helpful and knowledgeable. On the delivery date a team came out with a huge truck. We went over the game plan and they started to work. La Mesa has a lot of hard ground and rocks so for our king palm, they had to jackhammer through a lot of rock. They did a good job and gave us some care instructions and we were all set. Called up yesterday to get a price on a Juniper with Pom Poms. I had just killed mine by over trimming. Nice guy sent me photo, juniper with two poms. 5 gal. I asked him price for pick up, no planting, etc. He said....$400 per plant - I messaged him back questioning the price, he never replied. I thought he was kidding, but alas no. Absolutely amazing service! It doesn't even count as service, my experience was a lot more than that. I showed up looking to add some trees to add some privacy to the front our house, I was met by Bryan and he was so friendly and fun to talk to, that it felt more like hanging out at my brothers house. He took us for a ride all around the property which was informative for me and a joy ride for the kids! Normally taking kids anywhere reduces how long you can spend somewhere and how much information you're able to take in, but this wasn't a problem. The kids were having a blast while I had every question I had answered. I had several specific goals- ever green trees with no unsafe berries for my young kids and their friends or my pets to get at, plus no roots that would damage concrete, other landscaping or pipes. We ended up with Ficus Nitida fruitless figs for a privacy hedge and a stunning strawberry tree to put in front of a bedroom window and as a center piece when pulling into the driveway. The install guys were great and did an amazing job to boot- despite having to dig through extremely tough ground. They were careful around other irrigation and pipes in the ground- being very close to our gas and water main. They placed everything exactly where I wanted it. The install crew also fertilized the soil correctly as well. I simply can't say enough about the entire experience start to finish. Every single person I interacted with was great. Every step was easy. The fact that we all had fun on top of that speaks volumes. As a side note, before final purchase my wife came out to pick the trees out, they had an event on with free grilled food and beverages supplied, it ended up being closer to a date night that landscape shopping. Although we spent more than we initially intended, we know we got a killer deal. This is the single best visual upgrade to our home and property since we moved in. read more

Love this place! I needed a variety of plants and maybe one or two trees to top off our front yard remodel. On my first visit Andrew drove me around all over their nursery in a cart for at least an hour. He took detailed notes and we thoroughly discussed composition. On another day I came back, only to hand pick the exact plants we would select for our home. Again, Andrew was so easy to work with and it was some of the most fun & stress free decision making I experienced since moving into this home. Finally the day came. Juan and his crew showed early and immediately went to work. They did such an awesome job identifying physical challenges and overcoming them with simple alternatives or slight deviations from the plan. Also worth mentioning were being extra cautious ever since a different company accidentally punctured a water line. These guys were extremely considerate of my concern in that regard, carefully digging around any of the target spots we were using and making absolute sure we wouldn't again hit something serious. This is the first time that I've been to the nursery since they were bought out by Moon Valley. Their prices have doubled or tripled from what they were before. They are the most expensive nursery ever, without a doubt. For a comparison, shrub that is $70.00 at Home Depot was "on sale" for $299. A 6' cypress was "on sale" for $1500 Won't ever be going back...yikes!!! read more

We were looking for an ornamental tree in our front yard but did not really know much about varieties, care and drought resistance. First time we came to Moon Valley, we were greeted by Tony G. and received a great tour through their nursery. Tony was super helpful, patient and knowledgeable. Over the course of the next few months Tony continued responding to our questions until we finally decided to buy an Australian Willow. We schedule the installation within 2 weeks and everything went super smooth! Jared and his team did a fantastic job and were very careful when digging as we anticipated to hit our water-lines...but we didn't. 4 weeks later, our tree started new shoots and we are super happy!
