Plenty of people working to help load or answer questions. The prices are higher than big box stores, but your not going to find this kind of variety and different sizes at any box stores. The plants I get from here are all alive still! (In contrast to the plants I bought from other big box stores nearby... most of them do not survive for whatever reason) -plants I have from here: meyer lemon, pink lemon, pineapple guava, and now two different varieties of low-chill blueberries! They are all doing well This place has a large variety of plants, from flowers to trees, from fruits to vegetables, from shrubs to bushes to vines. It's a really fun place to look around if you are into plants. The prices are a little higher than the other stores, but the quality of plants I get are worth it. The staff are always friendly and helpful. They also have a loyalty program, the Hedge fund, that you can earn points and turn them into in-store credit. They also offer free gardening classes on saturdays Some of their other gardening things (soil, fertilizer, pots etc) are quite expensive, so I do price-check with other places first. read more

Was hunting down nurseries years ago and came across this large one deep in Poway. I love plants and was so happy to come across this large nursery! They have a huge selection of plants year round and bring in the seasonal ones as they become available. Three years on our first visit, I saw the coolest water plants! Ever since, I haven't been able to time it correctly with my visits to come get some. This year I finally got the plants I've wanted three years ago! We finally got to bring home a yellow water lily ($60) and three water lettuce ($3.99 each). So in love with them!!! :) Over the years we've bought different indoor plants and they've always done well at home or at work. I just got another for my office, the Philodendron Birkin ($25). It's small and has these beautiful white pinstripes. They have a decent selection of pottery large and small for indoor and outdoor plants but haven't found many to fit my size plants or my tastes. This location has a pretty cool garden railroad that has water lilies in the pond. Completely recommend bringing the kiddos to come check it out. They also have a chicken coop with several chickens! Staff is super helpful and happy to answer any questions you have. If the person you asked doesn't know, they will find the person who has more knowledge and if they're not working at the time, they will let you now when they are working so you can call or come back during that time. Went there last Saturday. Was looking for milkweed as our garden have been visited by monarch butterflies multiple times. They have a whole table just for milkweeds. Service is amazing too. Staffs are knowledgable and was able to give me advise on what flowers would be great for our humming birds and bees too. Prices are affordable. One of the milk weed had a decent size monarch carerpillar that has now enter the chrysallis phase. Then we found three little ones when me and our son were gardening and checking on Silen. This is one of our go to nurseries! Between this and the local shop in Escondido, they will have all your needs covered. I love the organization of this garden center. And let's talk knowledge. The staff here knows sooooo much about the plants. I am not so great at plants and gardening, this staff makes me feel like I can do it!! I am so thankful for them. We have gotten pretty flowers. But also squash, tomatoes, strawberries, a fig tree, and a few other things, so we can grown our own food. read more

"Come on, ride the train, hey, ride it" - Quad City DJs I begin with this quote to share something you might not know/expect about this nursery if you've never been-- they have a miniature train! It's tiny in scale, so you can't actually ride it (sorry, I know the quote was kind of misleading), but it is SO cool! They have a whole miniature world set up with the train running around it. Besides the cool tiny train set-up, they also have a huge selection of plants and trees. I come here when I'm looking for something special that they don't carry at the big home improvement stores. Their staff is also very knowledgeable, which is helpful when trying to find the perfect plant/tree to add to your collection. Speaking of helpful, they also warranty their plants for 90 days. You can bring back your plant that you either cared for too much (....or completely forgot about) and they will accept it. Love this place! read more

Literally one of my favorite places! I could be here all day looking at the plants. This is one of the best nurseries I have ever been to. They have a huge variety of plants, flowers and fruit trees. They have all of your soil, fertilizer and pesticide needs. And most importantly, they have a wonderful reception area in the back with knowledgeable staff members that will help you find what you are looking for, identify what is killing your plants, and anything else you may need. This place has saved me on so many occasions. I buy almost all of my flowers, plants, and trees here. Everything is reasonably priced and I know I'm getting good product from wonderful/helpful people. Something else I love about this place are the classes they provide every Saturday from 9:30-10:30ish. Almost all their classes are free and have really been helpful, listening to and learning from the experts. This is one of the best overall nurseries in San Diego. This is based on several visits and many purchases for a landscaping project. With so many other nurseries in California selling out to the mega-corporation Moon Valley, this might be your last hope to get affordable plants and trees in San Diego. - Prices are fair - Open 7 days a week (9AM to 5PM) - Returns are 90 days with receipt. - Delivery is around $75 for your entire order (depending on zip code) but if you spend like $700 or more they ship everything for free. Warning- I purchased two Palo Verde trees from here. The night after owning my trees they were covered with cutworms!! I was perplexed how they got there expecially seeing that this was the night after buying them.. I went back to the nursery and I asked them about the worms and how did I get them. They basically shrugged their shoulders. After some sleuthing I found out that the bamboo pole that the tree was attached to was full of worms on the inside and there was also a black window. Anyway, their bamboo tree stakes are all full of cutworms. Be sure to remove the bamboo when you plant. That was a rookie mistake on my part... read more

Fabulous place! Everything is open, easy access, and so much to explore! I'm a newbie with plants, little gardening, and a little backyard farm. All I can say it's addictive and I love plants, getting in the dirt and watching something grow! My kids love it too! Great experience for them. OK enough with that, So this place is huge, definitely do some homework what you want to get and try to get yourself out. You'll spend all day ha! The employees are extremely friendly and helpful. Plenty of free classes to get a little head start. The prices are excellent! Especially what you get! Return policy is very reasonable too. Sign up for the rewards....trust me it adds up! Still have the other side of the store to venture but love just coming here. It's peaceful, not too crowded, plenty of parking, clean bathrooms. The best focal point of this place is the train set up! My kids love trains! Heart and soul... my little engineers can tell you almost anything about trains. The set up is pretty incredible! I have mostly videos, still need to upload pictures. But it's worth the trip! Definitely recommend going either first thing in the morning when they open, or just before they close. This place can get pretty busy, but it's a really fun place just to walk through. They even have chickens! How can you not like chickens! Have fun!! read more

I've been to both the Point Loma one and the Poway one several times. I've had better luck with the service staff in the store than over the phone. This is my general purpose go-to nursery! Fruit trees: good selection, ok plants. Indoor plants: great selection. Native California plants: excellent selection at great prices for the plant size! I've had much better survival rate from Walter Anderson nursery than from other boutique sellers because the plants are more mature and survive better in the hellscape of my yard. What's excellent is the info card which tells you the size, bloom season, pollinators of interest etc so you can browse and plan so much easier on your own. My daughter and I went to Walter Anderson to check out their seeds and plants. She has been wanting to start growing some veggies and just to see what else would be good as a started garden (I do not have a green thumb and said I am happy to support but I should keep away hehe). Walter Anderson has a great, wide variety of started plants (already growing and require maintenance) seeds, flowers, lawn statues, and basically everything and anything you need to help you start your garden. The employees are great, they are there if you have any questions or need anything and they are all very knowledgeable. Prices are competitive as far as planters and soil and such. While we also shop at other nurseries and garden centers in the San Diego area, Walter Andersen in Poway is our #1 source for all things garden and landscaping. The staff is very approachable, friendly and knowledgeable. I totally trust their expert advice. Their plants are of very high quality, and the selection is extensive -- especially the annual flowers and vegetables. Prices can be slightly higher than other nurseries, but worth it. Take the time just to walk around the well-organized yard -- it's like visiting a flower or garden show. Make sure to check out the rose selection in the rear yard. It's the best in all of San Diego! I heard about this place through a Facebook interest group for carnivorous plants so decided to check it out. I'm kicking myself for not coming sooner because they have everything I've been searching for for awhile, like fully grown red shiso/perilla and mature yuzu trees. I'm pretty sure if you are looking for something specific, they will have it here. I mean, they have 6 different types of thyme and a good dozen or more types of peppers and every citrus you can imagine. They also have a very interesting display of staghorn ferns from small 4" pots up to giant wall mounted once at least 2-3' across. The bonsai available look nice and established, but also priced accordingly, not the $20 kind you find in Walmart. The herbs are amazing - just $4 each! Fair selection of succulents, $2 for a 1" plant. So back to the carnivorous plants, the main reason I came. I asked a worker when I was browsing outside where to find Sarracenia (pitcher plant) but he had no idea and thought they did not carry any carnivorous plants. I found them inside against the wall. They have one venous fly trap and two varieties of nepenthes plus the sarracenia Scarlet Bell. Unfortunately this is definitely the wrong location for these plants because they typically need full sun and are very obviously suffering from the lack thereof, with plenty of dried up pitchers. At $10 though, I decided to snag a sarracenia and see if I can revive it. I also noticed that some of the other plants look a little parched too so. One worker plucked a dead looking fern off the shelf. Even though selection is unbeatable, the slightly below par health was the reason I took off a star. Sign up for their membership. You just need to give your name and number and you'll get $5 back for every $100 spent. Masks are required. You can browse the outdoor display without standing in line, but to pay or to check out the house plants, you may need to wait 5 min or so on the line outside since they are limiting number of people inside. Parking lot is a bit small. I had to park on the street and walk back, but no big deal. They offer to help to get your plants in your car. read more
