I have an old house built in 1956 and I got into thinking that I wanted to give my kitchen a facelift since I spend a lot of time there. I wanted to just have the old original oak looking cabinet and doors painted . I did some research for painters and MoonDance appeared somewhere. I called right away and I made an appointment and Steve, the owner, came to visit me. At once I felt at ease with him with his respectful demeanor and we started talking. He was a straight shooter kind of guy, and did a survey of the kitchen area. He asked me how long I've been staying there and was I planning to sell the house. I'll die in this house was my reply. He inspected the doors and cabinets and said I would be better off If I replace them since the old ones were made of stained plywood and particle boards. I will make you a beautiful good looking kitchen. He noticed that I also had a laminated countertop and recommended that I replace it too. He took measurements and photos and gave me a rate right there. It was a bit lower than what I expected. I said, let's do it. This is what I mean by feeling at ease with him. We hand shook and he emailed me the following day with his quote for me to peruse and sign. He emailed me 5 days later with a bit higher quote since the countertop company he was contracting with had increased their prices. It was still within my budget. Lori Olsen. the office Mgr. (very good in communicating with me) called me to ask when I want it scheduled to begin. They assigned Giovanni with Nena, Luis and Jossue. Everyone was cheerful, obliging and accommodating. Leaves everything clean before going home. All of them speak highly of Steve being a good employer. I did my research and picked this company from a host of others to complete my fence staining project. Unfortunately, Steve was so booked up that he was unavailable until December. We decided to hire someone to paint the entire interior of our home, something we had never done before, since we tend to be the DIY type. I checked Yelp reviews and called 3 different painting contractors, leaving messages with the details of the job. Steve at MoonDance quickly contacted me and we set an appointment for him to come see the job. One of the other contractors never did get back to me. The 3rd company did contact me and came to look at the job, but his bid took over a week to arrive and only after I contacted him and asked for it. Steve arrived at our agreed upon time to review the job. He was polite, professional and explained everything. His bid arrived in a timely fashion and although it was higher than my other bid, I was impressed how responsive Steve was, so we decided to go with MoonDance. Our start date was scheduled for 3 months out, partly because they are extremely busy and because they had some rain delays. Finally the start date arrived. It was to be a 2 man crew, but due to illness and car trouble, the first 2 days only 1 painter arrived. To make up for that, 3 men worked the rest of the job. The crew of Bernardo, Marvin, lead by Ulysses were excellent! They arrived on time everyday and immediately got to work. They were all clean and neatly dressed, were polite, respectful, friendly and conscience of the fact 3 people and 2 dogs still had to live in the chaos. They tidied up at the end of each day and told me their plan for the next. We tried to be one step ahead of them by moving furniture, but each evening Ulysses would tell me "don't move furniture, we will do that". I can't give enough praise to Ulysses. He worked the first 2 days alone and did the work of 2 men, even with a bad shoulder. Almost every day either Steve or Mike would stop by to check in with me and their crew. We're having the exterior done next and will definitely have MoonDance Painting back. And Steve says they do redwood decks too! read more

Moondance Painting is hands down THE BEST painting sub-contractor we have used EVER. At this point we only use Moondance for our jobs because Steve and his crew have never let us down. They are great communicators, flexible with our schedule, do EXCELLENT work and are incredibly professional. In addition to using Moondance as a sub-contractor for our construction company, I also refer Steve to my real estate clients as well. I had a very pleasant experience with MoonDance Painting last week. Everyone I interacted with - the woman booking appointments (I believe her name is Renee), the owner (Steve), and the guy who did my painting job (Alex) were all very professional, courteous and upbeat. I was eager to repaint my guest room and I appreciated Renee's effort to squeeze in my consultation only several days after my initial phone call. Setting up appointments for both the consultation and the actual painting work were both very easy. This company is great about answering their phones and returning calls promptly, which did not go unnoticed, as far too many companies are lacking in customer service these days. It is also noteworthy how cheerful all three individuals were, as communication skills are also not universal (e.g. talking to a plumber I hired two weeks ago was like pulling teeth, as he had little interest in explaining what he was doing or how long the job would take). I was really impressed with MoonDance both in terms of their communication skills and work ethic. I booked 8 hours of painting for $300, a deal advertised on Angie's List. My painter, Alex, was punctual and worked quickly and effectively in my guest bedroom. He filled in all the small holes in the walls, did a lovely job painting the walls, trim, and door, and even had an extra 45 minutes to touch up other spots around my house where the paint had chipped off (two doorways and two sections of the living room baseboards). A final nice touch was that Steve followed up with me after the job was done to see how it went. It was clear that both he and Alex genuinely cared that I was happy with the work done and would have been receptive had I voiced any issues. I'm really shocked that the only two reviews i could find are negative- we couldn't have had a more different experience. I had four painting contractors come to bid my exterior house paint job-at the same time. They all knew they had competition, and made their best case. Steve from Moondance went miles beyond anyone else in explaining exactly what he was going to do, what was covered, etc. He went on to describe exactly how many dry rotted trim boards he would replace for the price, and how much an additional board or two would cost. He left nothing unsaid, and really gave my wife and I a feeling of confidence. Finally, he made it clear that if there was any issue after the job was done, that his guys would come back and fix it. On top of this, his bid was among the lowest. There was really no decision at all for us, we went with them. The quality of the paint job is fantastic- and believe me, my wife and I are sticklers. They worked with us to suggest interesting colors for our front door and garage...and they even installed bird netting under our rain gutters so those pesky swallows don't nest on our house again! When the job was done, we did have one small issue with a portion of the netting ( not with the paint job at all), and as advertised, Steve's crew came out and made it right. It's not often I deal with a company that does what they say they'll do and do it well- that's what Moondance is all about. I highly recommend them to anyone. read more

Our project was huge. It involved a large Queen Anne style house and 3 exterior buildings. It involved working with other contractors & builders and more importantly working under a tight time-frame. Since we are an after school program for girls, we also needed to have the work done during the hours when children weren't here and daily they need to have things clean and ready for the girls to attend. And....they did it. The owner, Steve Stiles, was in constant communication with me. He replied promptly to my emails & text messages. If he wasn't going to stop by the site the following day, he let me know that too. Not that I needed it, but he held my hand thru the entire process. I could not be happier with the job start to finish. The team was able to start my job ahead of their own schedule and Perez and the crew were really efficient. Our schedule was flexible so they worked beyond a full day and finished almost a day earlier. The paint had no residual smells or fumes that you may be used to and the surfaces were workable that evening. This was important since we have young children. This review was written by a layman with no professional knowledge of residential or commercial painting. The information here is my opinion, based upon my experience with Moondance painting. Your experience may be better or worse than mine. Over a period of several years my wife and I were, according to the owner of this company, their largest customer. In total we spent well over $100,000 with Moondance on more than a dozen projects. Here is what occured: 1. They did not do a proper clean-up of the site at the end of each dsay until they received several verbal repimands from us. The litter included fast food wrappers and soft drink bottles in hallways and rooms. 2. They left ladders, drop cloths and paint cans blocking access to our garage on a number of occassions. This happened despite their having been provided with a storage area next to the garage which they simply ignored. 3. They convinced us to use time and materials (T&M) based contracts "because it woud save us money." The Contactors State Licensing Board disapproves of such arrangements (which we did not know at the time), because it invites overbilling and other problems. 4. Moondance charged $90/hour for their work (which was often sub-par, in our opinion). This was not entirely clear to us the time. As we later disvovered this is almost twice the price of other licensed painters in our area (Marin County). 5. Over time it became difficult to get them to provide contracts for their work. (Contractors are required to provide contracts and not begin work until both parties have signed them.) 5. In some instances they damaged items they worked on, and they did not properly repair them. 6. Occassionally we checked their bills against our records and found that they had overcharged us. Their reasons included painters leaving the job early but turning in time sheets that showed they worked a full day. Or clerical errors such as charging us for hours worked for other customers. This amounted to thousands of dollars over time time we worked with them and was the main reason they no longer have our account. We treat our crews with respect. We provide them with free soft drinks and tip them well for their work. We are trusting, which means, in part, that we may be easier than some to be taken advantage of. Given our experience, I question the authenicity of some/many of their reviews. But that's just speculation on my part and I could be wrong. Good luck! read more

We live in an old house and had a pretty bad plumbing leak in our bathroom ceiling. It really couldn't wait until COVID was over, and so Ulysses came to repair the ceiling in two bathrooms, and touch up our kitchen cabinets, which were a mess. Ulysses was extremely professional, thorough, friendly, dedicated and quite careful to practice safe distancing, wear a mask, clean thoroughly, etc. Steve set up the appointment, helped think through the right type of paint for our tricky old house issues, was clear about the estimate, and made sure we were happy with the job. MoonDance painted the exterior of our home in 2010 and did such a fantastic job, that I had them return in 2011 to repaint the entire interior of our 4000 sq. ft. home. The owner, Steve, was very professional and handled the entire process, from matching some of my existing colors (I had no record of!) to repairing some holes in our sheetrock. I can't even tell where they patched. They used Kelly-Moore Zero VOC paint, in an eggshell finish, and there was virtually no odor when I came home at the end of the day. They also painted all of our interior woodwork, which turned out great. We are kind of picky and have had marginal results with other contractors, so it was refreshing to have a company meet and even exceed our expectations. Angel and the crew were prompt and everything was cleaned up beautifully at the end of every day, and the quality of work was top notch. I would definitely refer MoonDance and indeed have. Several of my relatives and friends have used MoonDance and have had similar experiences to ours. read more

I'm not sure why this company has gotten two bad reviews. We had a great experience with them, and we chose them partially because they were recommended by our neighbors who used them. Four out of five of our neighbors who used them gave them a good review and recommended them. The four all said Moondance did a good job (and one of them is super-picky!) My neighbors did recommend staying home to watch the painting to make sure it is being done to your satisfaction, and also to wait until they are completely finished with the job to pay the final payment. We had the exterior of our house painted, and Moondance also painted one bedroom and touched up a second bedroom that we had painted ourselves. We thought their team did an excellent job. We are happy with the quality of the work, and the colors look great. The staff was friendly and easy to work with. The owner, Steve Stiles, was responsive, went the extra mile to satisfy us, and followed through in a timely manner on the things he said he was going to do. We received another bid for the work, but we chose Moondance because it had the lowest price and several of our neighbors had recommended the company. We're happy with our choice. read more

I'm sorry to have to give a "green" business such a poor review. Keep in mind you can ask any painter to use green (no- or low-VOC) paints, or those made with lots of wonderful natural ingredients. I hired MoonDance to paint most of my home's interior, with a different color for every room. Their biggest mistake was not following my (and my interior decorator's) instructions about which paint brand to use for one of the rooms, so the resulting color was not what I'd wanted and they had to return to repaint the entire room. They also neglected to paint one door of another room, and even when they returned they only did one coat, meaning they had to return a second time to correct it. That room also had a few paint smudges left on light switches and other non-painted surfaces. There were a few additional minor items I needed to ask them to correct. All in all, I was unhappy with the expertise of this company. read more

After grumbling once again about how poor a paint job MoonDance did on our house, I decided to write this review, so others can be better prepared when hiring them. We paid $11K in 2007 to have our Berkeley bungalow painted. The good thing about MoonDance is that they were friendly, fast, and left the site clean. No complaints there, if that is important to you. However, the paint job itself just did not hold up, due to very poor prep. I did not realize how important it is to specify in great detail what "prep" means, rather than relying on the experts doing it right. Specific example: they replaced a piece of window siding with (1) wood that was not right for outdoors, (2) they did not prime it properly, and (3) they nailed it with nails not rated for outdoor use. Result: rusty nail heads, split wood, dry rot. It took only a few years for that to show, but since it is on our deck, we have it as a constant reminder of how we feel a bit bamboozled. Second example: I don't care how good you are, but no-one can paint in a straight lines, so you use painters tape on windows, right? Nope. Again not something that seems like such a big deal on most of the windows, but it would have been smart practice to at least use tape on the (new) french doors to the deck - highly visible. Speaking of visible: our first grumbles were within the first year about our front porch floor. Again: wrong prep. They tried fixing it once by just gooping another layer on, but the problem is wrong prep. It simply has been peeling ever since. And while we agreed that a complete sand-down back to wood and re-priming of the woodwork was not in scope, we did expect to see sanding out unequal bits and filling holes as part of "medium-level" prep. They could have gotten away without doing that most areas, but should have been smart enough to at least do so in the highly visible front door area. Would I hire them again? What I know now is that we probably got a $6K paint job, and they neglected to do the $5K of prep. We were simply naive. Next time we hire a painter, I will specify a three-part job: I want to see the prep delivered separately from priming and from finish. I want to see blue tape on windows. I don't need 'fast', I need well-done. read more

Moondance painted my house two years ago, and it still looks great! Visitors always remark on the paint job. However, swallows like to nest on houses like mine in my neighborhood. So, Moondance put up bird netting with the paint job two years ago. The netting looked nice, but it didn't do the job. This year the birds were back trying to plant their mud nests in my eaves. No worries, Steve was good on his warranty and replaced the netting with a more effective design that still looks great. His crew was courteous and professional. I am a happy customer. MoonDance Painting did an absolutely terrible, abominable, appalling, low quality job (for a high price). MoonDance bills themselves as an "eco" painting company and presents their services as high quality painting, however they were anything but. They began by subcontracting out to a wood refinishing "expert" to refinish our unpainted wood trim--the "expert" scraped off some of the old paint drips that were on the wood, didn't patch the holes, didn't sand or strip the old stain, put an uneven coat of oil on the wood and called it "refinished". When we expressed our concerns about the fact that the wood trim still looked terrible (and really no different than before), and that for $6000 we expected a bit more, the "expert" slapped some wood putty in about half the holes (not even bothering to sand them) and "fixed" the uneven stain by dabbing a darker stain in spots and making the wood look like it has chickenpox. The MoonDance owner, Steve Stiles, took very little responsibility for the poor quality work of his subcontractor. And yet, for some reason, we let MoonDance continue, hoping that the quality of the painting would be better. It wasn't. The painters did almost no plastering of holes/cracks/etc (despite an explicit promise from the MoonDance owner Steve Stiles to plaster all the large "problem spots" on the walls), they did a poor caulking job along the trim and proceeded to sloppily edge all of the wood trim, leaving a whole new coat of fresh paint on the newly "refinished" wood. In addition, they managed to paint 3 rooms with the wrong color, do the touchups of those same rooms with the correct color (you can bet that looked terrible!), and confuse flat wall paint with eggshell trim paint so that areas of the trim and ceilings now have uneven sheen levels. In addition, there were tons of paint drips on the floor, windows, and light fixtures, and on the first day one of the painters managed to step in wet paint and track it down the entire hall and stairway. Their edging of walls and ceilings was appallingly sloppy, large visible brush strokes, uneven streaky paint, and often missing whole areas of the edging, and some of the rooms (despite their promise of two coats of paint!) only got one uneven coat of paint. Getting them to come back and fix their work was like pulling teeth--every time they came back they fixed 1/3 of what we asked them to fix and left new damage in other areas (gauges in the floor from scraping up their spills, touchups with the wrong paint colors, etc.). I finally had to walk around after them while they worked checking every single thing and cleaning up after them. We've had them back three times to try to get them to fix the appalling quality of their work, and we have yet to get to what I would consider an even acceptable paint job. Overall it was a terrible experience. I don't recommend using MoonDance Painting. If painters were licensed, they would lose theirs. I would never use them again and I would NEVER recommend them to anyone. read more

Set up a time for an estimate on a Thursday at 8am. David came on Wednesday at 6am while my family and I were sleeping. When I told him he looked at his clip board paused then said this was the appointment date and time, as I was reading my email that clearly stated different. Not the worst part though, that was when he said they would put BONDO to fill in a few cracks on the exterior. When I challenged him on this he clearly was "smarter" than me and the 6 other estimates who all said BONDO is not what should be used. Then after 2 weeks of waiting I got the highest estimate for the least amount of work, not even close to the second highest bid which is the one I took. Granted this was a year or so ago but there was this sales pressure he kept applying to convince me to use his company when he didn't even have a full understanding of the job and materials. We chose Steve's company because his bid seemed fair (neither the highest or lowest) and he was very responsive to my wife's chemical sensitivities and was very detailed in spelling out what they would accomplish in the extensive prepping needed before painting. As for the actual painting crew, Ulysses and Richard were fantastic! They were careful to ask us every time there was a question about how we wanted the colors placed (a total of 3) and were not even put out when we changed the trim color the last minute. The final result exceeded all our expectations! I had only one minor criticism, that Steve was sometimes a bit slow getting back to me while the painting was going on. Steve Stiles, owner of MoonDance Painting, quoted me 3 TIMES MORE than two other reputable painters for the same exact job! His personality turned me off on the phone but I figured I'd give them a try anyway. Steve showed up early and had the nerve to call me and ask if I was close. If you show up early, you sit and wait, you don't bother the customer. When I met him in person, I found my first impression from the phone call to be spot on... he was somewhat arrogant and a dud of a personality. I'm not sure if he was taking advantage of me because I'm a female who just bought a house in an affluent neighborhood, or if he takes advantage of all of his clients. By the way, you may want to work on your marketing - the ugly green house on the back of your folder pretty much sums you up. read more
