The gold standard of cheeseburgers! I've been loving them my whole life. The grill shuts off at 12:30 sharp, so plan accordingly.

First time was 15 years ago in April 2005 and I met the original owners. This time I met the new owner, who is their daughter in law and she was equally gracious. A truly unique and special place for being very simple and everyday from a time gone by. People love it and for good reason. I plan to be back a lot sooner the next time. Excellent restaurant! The wait was long, but it was an exceptionally busy day. The food was worth the wait. The restaurant is located in a historic building constructed in the 1910's. The Moonshine Store, population 2, as small as small gets and home of the moonburger. This place is a throwback to simpler times and a real slice of Americana. I don't know were exactly all the people come from at 12:00 to fill up the place because I don't see very many places people can come from around there. When you see people arrive you can be sure they are there for the Moon burger. The moonburger is their claim to fame and is excellent in a wonderfully pure, no frills sort of way. Just a little heads-up , if you plan to visit, make sure you get directions and you arrive before 12:30 because that is when they shut down the grill. The main reason to find the Moonshine Store is to venture on a quest for the worlds best burger (debatable) and the worlds best people (nonnegotiable). Maybe we went on an "off" day but really, for the hype, the Moonburger was NOT the best burger I've ever had. No where close. Mine was dry, un-flavorful, not seasoned (salt or pepper) and on a slightly stale bun. Despite that the place was filled with some friendly people with great atmosphere. Hard to believe that the health department doesn't give them any problems but that's good that they don't because it's an experience that you will have to check out for yourself to know what I mean. I like the honor system where you place your order and grab your chips and drink and just let the person at the register know what you got. They don't write it down. Absolutely go! Delcious burgers!! I recently got the double cheese and it was gigantic. Do not expect to get fries or many other sides. They have lays chips and that sort of thing. My suggestion: go on a warm day. They have picnic tables outside and cute scenery. Sitting inside involves sitting crowded church pews. Also beware of their hours. Worth the wait! We hit a rather busy Friday... the local lady behind us said she has never been there when it was that busy and she comes often. They really do close the grill at 12:30 pm. We arrived at 11:45 and the line was out the door. The bacon cheeseburger I ordered was large enough I probably didn't need the bag of chips....but they were the perfect compliment to a delicious and large burger...real ground beef. This is the best hamburger joint I've ever been to!! The burgers are huge, and extremely good!! Met lots of friendly people there, including the women who work there!! I grew up right down the road from Moonshine and it spoiled me completely on a great burger. The ground beef is high quality and hand formed. The burgers are juicy, flavorful, and the perfect size. Each burger overhangs the bun, but isn't so thick that you can't get your mouth around it. The old-fashioned grilled hotdogs and grilled ham and cheese are also among of my favorites. Then, there's the environment. The store still feels like the old farming community general store is has been for nearly a hundred years. A truly unique "must do" if you are in the area. Especially if you are a motorcycle rider; somehow the Moonshine Store has gotten on every ride list in the U.S it seems and when we eat here (which we do frequently on Saturday as we only live about 15 miles away) there can be over 100 motorcycles here. We have also seen people arrive by 4 wheeler, horseback and horse drawn wagon (I am NOT making this up). But heed the warnings about getting here early. I don't get the reason for the few negative reviews. The Moonshine Store doesn't pretend to have anything other than great hamburgers. No ambiance, outdoor picnic table seating only, not a lot of side choices, just great hamburgers and cheeseburgers. And great they are. Huge, juicy, perfectly cooked, and delicious. As far as ambiance goes, the setting is beautiful - a rustic building in the woods in the middle of nowhere. Miles from anything, yet they are busy! My biker buddies and I have been to the Moonshine many times. From my house its 161 miles just to get lunch. We do it every year and plan on going again. Great fresh beef hamburgers and great pork burgers too. If you're looking for indoor dining, a server at your table, sides other than chips, not standing in line to order or setting on a picnic table outside then this place is not for you. Nothing fancy, just and old nostalgic general store, out in the middle of nowhere. I'm a hearty eater and buy my meat for home prep only from a local locker plant. I know a thing or two about quality meat and Moonshine servers quality food. I don't know the owners but they're always friendly and appreciative of my patronage. Not only do I rate it a 5 every one of my friends rates it a 5 too. Occasionally an Amish lady is across the road selling to die for pie/cobbler and home made ice cream. Although lots of bikers stop here many other people from all walks of life are there every time I go. Kid friendly too. As for price, for $10 you leave full and I'm a big guy. read more

I made it to the 8th Annual Moonshine Lunch Run held on April 14th, 2012. I must say that this is a unique place, a piece of Americana at it's best. Although the rain held some people back, the store served 1336 burgers that day. This had to be one of the best that I've had, and the atmosphere only made it better.
