Stopped in after two years. I retired and was never in the neighborhood. I missed eating there. Parking still stinks but they had made more room inside for seating, which is a good thing. Since it was a Saturday, I walked right up to the cash register. A sweet girl, with a smile, took my order. I wanted tea to drink and she suggested I fill my cup with lots of ice because the tea in the urn was hot. I thanked her for the tip. I ordered a double of the world famous hot dogs. They are just great! The buns were steamed, the dogs were temperature hot, slaw was crunchy, and the chili, as always, was spicy hot. These are the best hot dogs known to man. Pulliam's in Winston-Salem are good but don't hold a candle to Moore's. Oh yeah, the tree is still there, growing through the roof. read more

Why is it the country stores that ALWAYS have the best food? Its insane the distance I'd drive for a fully loaded Moores country store got dog. The best one in the whole area is the one on 460, with the tree coming through the building. Served quickly, and I just love the checkered tablecloths lol. I have not been here in years. I got married, had a new job, moved to a different area. One day I thought , I wonder if Moore's is still good. Well, YES!! I went there , got 2 hotdogs, mustard, onions, chili and slaw. An order of French fries and a bottle drink. No fountain. It was wonderful! The chili was a little spicy, just like I remembered, and fries were awesome. The big tree is still growing thru the roof! It was &10.91. I was surprised at that and pleased. Go 460 E toward Appomattox. Moore's is on the right. There is a big tree growing out of it. You sit at a bench and enjoy!! Try it, especially if you are an old customer. Obviously, the eye-catcher here is that this place looks like a road side attraction: a tree, growing through the roof. If I may wax metaphysical for a moment, I'd like to comment that it sort of represents how perhaps we should let all things be: that if we remain unconventional, all is one. They allowed the tree to grow with the business instead of chopping it down. Here is a lesson for us all, no? Any old whoo, they have really spicy hot dog chili. Local people fight over this place--whether it's terrible or the best thing that ever happened to humanity. I like hot stuff and quirky places plus I'm a simpleton so...you should know where I stand. It's just a place where you order and then walk around perusing the shelves of pork rinds and Moon Pies and the local kitschy art on the walls. There's a stove in the corner I'd love to have. It's country. There are beans and deviled eggs and sweet potato pie sometimes. Local paper by the counter. Ads for the Rescue Squad Brunswick stew festival in the autumn. Stuff like that. But really. Don't get chili if you don't want your mouth to go numb. And the service is slow. If that bothers you the way it bothers my husband, mosey on along. I visited Moore's Country Store on a Monday around 1:00pm. The place was packed and parking was...complicated. The woman who took my order was friendly and I sat at a table. The crowd continued to grow. An order was done and they called out "510!" I was order 533. I was concerned. As orders came out, at one point when of the cooks came from behind the counter, made a slashing motion across his throat and said, "I'm gonna kill somebody back there." So that's something. After about 35 minutes, my order was ready: two hot dogs and fries. the dogs were ok. The chili was spicy for sure. The second hot dog fell apart when I tried to pick it up. Not great. The fries were good. Hot and crispy. On the way out I had to ask someone to move because I couldn't back out of my parking spot. Not the best experience here. Love that the place has been there since 1926 and I can tell it's a local favorite. So keep doing what you're doing! read more

Wow, this part grill/part county grocery store serves a hot dog with the hottest chili I've ever found on a dog, in fact it is so hot that your lips are numb before finishing the dog. I tried one with mustard, chili, and onion, and one all the way. The slaw helped a little with the heat, but only a little, didn't finish either dog due to the heat, and I love spicy food. Their dogs cost $1.49. This place has a grill in the back, you order at the counter and pay. The orders come out quickly, and the place was fairly busy. There are several table for seating, but that is all. Orders seem about evenly divided between hot dogs and hamburgers, with some ordering both. The parking lot is small, and it is on a busy road, so parking can be a problem. If I pass by again, I may try another dog, may be a burger, but if the chili is always as hot as I taste on my first dog here, I'm pass after that. read more

A country classic. Moore's is the kind of place that is getting harder and harder to find" that old country store with a fryer / grill and deadly delicious food. They have a decent selection of packaged goods here - drinks, snacks and the like but most people come here for the food. Moore's has some of the hotter chili I have ever had and everything is always fresh and tasty. Burgers, dogs, chili, fries and onion rings- oh man, a cardiologists wet dream come true. The chili is extremely spicy- so beware if you toss that on top of any of your food items - just saying. My favorites are the dogs, fries and onion rings, but feel free to try them all. They are open for breakfast and lunch- not sure how late they go. Place your order, pay and grab a seat- it is larger inside that it appears when you first park. Once your order is ready, they will yell out your number - and you just yell back- they will hunt you down and drop your food. This is no frills fare- so get ready to get your fingers greasy. Prices are average for the area- and you will not leave hungry. The only downsides to the place are that it is pretty grimy inside- a by product of those fryers chugging away no doubt. The parking situation is a bit dicey as well- use caution when entering and exiting onto busy 460. Give it a shot! read more

Yes, there is a giant tree growing through the roof. I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars on this one. The chili dog is amazing and their pulled pork BBQ sandwich was also incredibly tasty. The description by a previous poster of the chili dog is quite accurate. You will certainly die if you have too many of these things and don't ask too many questions about where they come from. I went with 3 stars due to the atmosphere, parking and the fact that I now smell like the store.... They are extremely busy at lunch so my wife had to wait a few minutes for someone to leave in order to get a parking spot. Good for the restaurant owners, bad for the patron. The store is dirty, dingy and smells. When I left I smelled like a giant hot dog. Not my brightest idea to eat here before going to meet the local and state legislators this afternoon. But, it is what it is... a greasy spoon, and a pretty good one at that. It is definitely a staple for the area and I would definitely recommend stopping in for a chili dog as long as you aren't going any where nice later and have permission from your doctor. Moore's is a Lynchburg legend. Ask the B&W folks who work near there and they will all tell the tale of Moore's. Moore's hallmark is the hot dogs. Imagine the cheapest hot dog you can imagine - filled with that amorphous substance that is some mysterious blend of 'meat' and 'filler. it has no texture, just a skin and some consistent tofu-like junk inside. Soak it in cherry red spicy sauce so long that the color permeates the entire dog. Find a bun. You must use one that is cheap, airy, and completely devoid of any nutritional value. The spongier the better. Chili is a blend of brown, semi-thick liquid, and the most finely ground meat that you can imagine. It may have been hamburger, but I wasn't sure. Assemble and eat. Bad for your health, bad for your gut, and definitely a source of greenhouse gas later in the afternoon - but yet it still tastes good. They also have a Melisse burger. Same kind of formula, but egg, ham and the best processed cheese food product you can buy. Everything is priced right, so have a few. The rest of the store is unremarkable and not terribly neat. It is easy to find - just look for the tree growing out of the roof (I'm not making this up). The entry/exit is a suicide run in the tradition that is Lynchburg's road system so be patient. I'm ashamed to say that I have eaten there more than once and keep going back. I will also recommend that you NOT fly cross country after eating there. Some things are not meant to go together and not everyone's gut can take Moore's brand of abuse. read more

Chicago with the works; chopped onions, sliced tomatoes, both a dill pickle spear and sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, pickled peppers, and is finished with celery salt, and served on a steamed poppy seed bun. (whoowee!) California; mustard, ketchup and relish or mexi-cali style; bacon wrapped with grilled onions, jalapenos, green peppers and mayo. (yummy) Kids like it with just plain old ketchup but Virginians; yellow mustard, chopped onions, chili and cole slaw. All the way so delicious! My first Virginian dog was here at Moore's County Store and I was hooked ever since order 2-3 for every visit. The combination of the chili and slaw just sets an explosion of heat and crunch in your mouth! The service is good and the dogs are better and I never leave without 1 pickled egg! Hot is good! The Waterlick location and Thomas Terrace along with Aylors are superior to this location. In due fact that you do not need a fork to eat theirs. Same dogs, chili the whole nine. Just some reason that this location seems to over steam the buns making them so soggy its an epic mess. The food prices are decent, but, everything else in the store is higher than their competition. Especially at the Waterlick location, which is the one we frequent the most since it is the closest. Hamburgers are always wayyyy overcooked even if asked to be cooked medium. BUT, the chili is amazing and why we all go there. They have the best tater wedges around and the dinner plates are decent for the money. Very much a fan, just hate having to stop at the one located at Mt Athos (the store with the tree growing through the roof) due to the dogs being a disaster and complete mess. Over 30 years of consuming this anal fire chili and will be most likely consuming it tomorrow. :) read more

My wife and I stopped here while vacationing. The Millisa burger 5 star. Everything is homemade. Banana pudding 5 star. Stopped the next day for breakfast just as good except they were cutting onions in the kitchen and 3 of 6 of us eyes were watering pretty good by the time we left. I haven't had everything. I can speak to the hotdogs and the breakfast biscuits. The hotdogs -- were underwhelming. Slick, steamed dogs, with hot (but not otherwise tasty) chili. The breakfast biscuits are HEAVENLY. Hand to God, these are the best breakfast biscuits you will find between Richmond and Roanoke on the 460-307-360 tip.
