This is such a lovely place. We stopped by on the way to have a socially distanced meal outdoors with family at a park on the James. Most everything is homemade. I had a very good and heavily handed Yoder's Ham lettuce wrap for a mere $6. You can add a side item (again all homemade) and a drink for a nominal cost. My in laws and I loved the dry good goods section especially the bulk spices. Evangeline offers some really great items like extra fine almond flour and the French Onion Soup mix. My husband said they baked goods were decent. We especially loved the nursery outside with so many beautiful herbs that we've been using to cook. I love this little place. I'm sad that they had to move all the way out to the edges of Madison Heights, but I will still make the special trip for some things. Anderson's is a little market ran by a kind group of Mennonite men and women. The staff could not be more helpful or kind, and are definitely not overbearing or pushy. The store itself is stocked full of predominantly bulk items that have been weighed out into containers or bags, with a small selection of brand-name items, produce, meats, and even a small deli. Anderson's is my go-to place for bulk spices. You cannot beat the amount you get for the price. There is literally an entire aisle of plastic containers of really any spice you can imagine, even ones that are harder to find in regular grocery stores. I've found garam masala here, turmeric root, sea kelp powder, multiple garlic salts, as well as lots of dehydrated veggies and spices. In addition to the spices, they have a wonderful selection of fine flours and grains, from a 25 lb bag, to less than a pound if you just want to try something. They have several gluten-free options, a whole aisle of candies and nuts, an organic section, and a huge selection of preserves. They also usually have tons of seasonal candies and baking decorations for doing cakes and cookies as well. In the spring and summer they also have a lovely outdoor gardening area as well as classes you can cake on farming and gardening. The last thing we get from here are all of the ingredients to make our own laundry detergent. They have everything here, some of it even weighed out to what you'll need to make a batch -- the recipe is printed out on papers and put by the ingredients so it's practically fool-proof! I'm a regular shopper. They have items you can't find anywhere else. The tomatoes taste vine ripe. Some local produce. Home made chicken salad. Dried mango, lots of dried fruit. Nice, helpful staff. Meat counter and a couple of tables and chairs. Good sandwiches. Don't forget to look out into the back yard. read more
