(I have bought meat around 25 times from Whole Foods in Charlottesville and nothing was ever off.) As Fresh Markets go, this one was relatively large and had a substantial selection. I found no shortage of viable sale items, and managed to pick up both some actual fresh things like produce but also an abundance of protein shakes. The location was also a handy highway intersection for one on the go. It was a straightforward shopping experience for expensive food, and if the test of such a place is whether it can convince me to get more than I planned to, this place was successful. read more

The secret to any great meal starts with the quality of ingredients one chooses. And if this is your belief than you have come to the right store. Not only is the store adorably decorated, clean, with a huge selection of products, but the price point is reasonable. At least coming from Los Angeles it is. But what made this place extra special was the customer service. Everyone who works here is friendly, willing to help, and cares about their job. How I wish we had this store in Los Angeles. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Including the free sample. Now you might be thinking I'm exaggerating, I wish I was. If you ever come to Los Angeles, you will be disappointed because while the food tastes great, the freshness of ingredients cannot even compare. The quality of steak, collard greens, and potatoes would be equal to that of an expensive fancy steak house in Los Angeles. Crazy right? The biscuits and gravy would cost roughly $20 per person! So have I been looking up potential future summer homes... absolutely. But for now, this foodie will just admire from afar. Thank you fresh market for making my trip into Lynchburg an enjoyable one with the amazing selection you offer. This is one of the grocery stores that I have added to my list for regular shopping now that I have sold my car and am utilizing grocery delivery services. I never went to the store when I had a car but now that I have my groceries delivered I am able to utilize, the variety of grocery stores in town and this is one that has risen on my charts. It can be a little pricey, so you need to be aware of the cost, but they have some quality items that I have not found readily available elsewhere. Crabcakes is one example and they have, two varieties, one of which is reasonably priced and occasionally on sale. They do have sales if you watch carefully and often the delivery services that I subscribed to offer incentives that are worth taking advantage of in my opinion. I am a bit of a sucker for a "bargain" so I know that I have to be careful with this. But shopping for food online and having someone else go to the store and bring it to me is a positive process for me for the most part. You do miss the opportunities for in-store bargains, but since I no longer have a car, I have given those up already. Now I can get my food from several stores and this is usually one of them. I really enjoy going to the fresh market and all the different and awesome food finds. This review is mainly because of their deli chicken salad. I had been wanting to get some and I thought it would be so much better than the one I usually buy at Walmart. It was not better or even good. No flavor other than it just tastes like chicken mixed with mayonnaise. I have never been so disappointed and it's very pricy. I'll definitely go back to buying it from Walmart. I absolutely love shopping here because I know I'm going to get quality products. I love the associates on the floor everyone greets you. I mostly shop in the seafood section and the associates are lovely! The cashiers are hit or miss some are extremely welcoming and nice and others are rude and off putting. Even though some cashiers are rude doesn't change my rating for the store! Only thing I would suggest is maybe more selection of fish. Other than that great store to shop in! read more

Felt like I stepped into a market back in California. Quality of the produce was amazing. Didn't purchase from meat or fish counter but everything looked great. And the olive bar? Big hit. Also a plus that they bake their own bread. Prices are higher than the Kroger or Food Lion for sure but considering the quality level that didn't surprise me. Whole Foods with a different name. I am from NY (NYC to be exact)- so I was somewhat surprised to see NY prices in the Lynchburg area but Fresh Market has them for sure. Nice selection of goods to be sure, but you are going to pay for the items. I am always indecisive about places like this. On the one hand, the selection is very good. Good meat and seafood, fresh produce and good quality brands throughout but again, those prices will make you take a deep breath at the checkout line. I'd love to give it 4 starts but I just cannot bring myself to do it because of the cost. You be the judge. read more

Sorry. I've just had too many frustrating experiences with this store and their lack of understanding of the basic cuts of meat. When I finally get them to create a "custom" cut of beef they "butcher" it. Maybe the only game in town but we deserve much better. Also, lack of returned calls to store manager just adds to the frustration. Beware of the cost of vegetables at this location, especially if they were processed in any manner. $15 for riced cauliflower is just crazy. Good luck Fresh Market. I was extremely happy to find wild caught AMERICAN shrimp in the seafood display case. The girl who helped me was very nice and told me they came from NC. Also nice that day I was in there, which was yesterday, they were also on sale. The meat department was amazing as well and surprised to see so many prime cuts of meat as well. I was also tempted by the bakery display case and bought 2 mini cannolis for my husband and I to enjoy and they were delicious! read more

TFM. The Fresh Market brand. This city girl, for the first time, actually felt at home in Lynchburg... at a supermarket. Imagine my delight, the memories that flooded my mind as I walked in the door. I felt like I was back in Columbus Circle going down the escalator to the Whole Foods I so desperately loved when going to see my in-laws. Though this place is much smaller and quainter than the bigger city food supermarkets, the ambiance, decor and overall feeling of... "freshness" of this place did it in for me. I decided at that very moment from walking in the door, this is where I would go (besides my husband's arms) when I feel so woefully homesick. Fresh. Yes. Granted it only opened yesterday, so everything is still clean and in its place. The jars of nuts, candies and treats made my heart giggle like a silly child. The bakery display selection is small, but artisanal enough that made you feel special for just being in it's presence. Meats, fish, poultry... all so pristinely displayed and vibrant... not gray like some other butchers I've seen around these parts... I even saw a small sign that said, "We have whole roasting pigs, just ask!" A disappointment was the Sushi bar... I'm glad they had it, but it was from the same company that the Kroger in Forest uses, "Sushi with Gusto." And although their sushi is decent, I wish it was better. A concern is pricing here. Yes, they are relatively just a little more expensive than your average grocery store, but on their second day, they had banged out some good BOGO deals. "Buy One Get One Free" Ciao Bella gelato pints, Chobani yogurts, Rao's homemade pasta sauces were among the many sales going on. That's like saying two for the price of one, and if you know of these items, that' s not a bad deal... I even saw a sale for baby back ribs at $3.99/lb! PLUS, they have BOGO Tuesdays and $6.99 Saturdays on selected stuff. So to me, it'd be worth it to come here and scrounge around for these items. Thanks TFM, till we meet again. read more

I have waited for a whole foods or this store to come into town for 3 years. And its finally here. I love it, until I get to the register. Prices may not seem high while you're shopping, but just wait. Once checkout starts your jaw will drop. Im the type of person who will pay extra for organic everything. It's an interesting and food-scenic place to visit, and I'll be sure to come again, but I do have a suggestion: My mother walked in and around the veggie area, looking for something, and we got one or two items there, but as soon as she spied a single, plastic-wrapped almost $3.00 red pepper, she turned and headed for the cashier saying, "Everything must be a higher price here" and didn't even bother with the rest of the store. For years I was happy drinking any ole coffee but thanks to the women in my office, I'm now on a continuing quest to find the ultimate cup of "Joe". The Fresh Market is one of the best places in town to begin your search for that perfect cup of coffee. They have blends as well as single origin coffees in light, medium and dark roast. They also have a wide variety of flavored beans if that's your preference. All their coffees are whole bean and can be ground right there with dedicated coffee grinders for flavored and unflavored beans. You have total control of the grind so whether you are making cold brew, using a french press, pour over or drip you can get the perfect grind for each. They also sell Trager Brothers Coffee here which is roasted in Lovingston, VA and is currently my favorite coffee. If you haven't tried it yet, you should. It is fantastic! I make a special trip to Fresh Market each week just to get this coffee. If you love great coffee and enjoy the quest of finding that perfect cup. If you're looking for Whole Foods, this is the closest thing to it. However the smallness of this place makes your shopping experience quaint. The fruits are wonderful. Along with the meats, seafood and bakery choices. The coffee selection is excellent. The candy is arranged for kid's ultimate sweet tooth dream. The closest thing this town will get to Whole Foods. While the variety isn't as great as an actual Whole Foods or even Kroger for that matter, they do still have quite a bit. I usually come here for the breads, granola, hummus, fruits, and veggies, and I believe the prices are fair and not too steep. Obviously, their meats are more pricey in comparison to Kroger, but it's better quality. I do like their selections of wine and beer too because they carry a lot of my California favorites. read more

However, the only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is because sometimes it is hard to get help from someone behind the meat, deli and cheese counter, and a cake that I purchased there was less than satisfactory, but it is still my favorite place in Lynchburg. This store is conveniently located for us to pop in for a few things or a quick family meal. We don't do our regular family grocery shopping here, but there are a few items they carry that we love! I love the olive bar and the kids love their deli Mac and cheese. Their premise sandwiches and salads are good for a quick meal and we also enjoy the rotisserie chicken dinners with two sides and corn muffins. Their produce always seems fresh and is tasty. Their flower department is beautiful! The flowers smell so good as you walk in, but I have never bought any. They have a fabulous wine selection as well as many desserts, although they are pricey. Most things there you will pay more for than at a regular grocery store, but the we enjoy the items we buy from fresh market and will continue to purchase them! read more

Only issue is customer service on the front end (the cashiers) are not as friendly as other stores I go to. Oh my gosh I love this place!!! No, it doesn't have everything you need, but I personally think of it more like a specialty grocery, even a boutique grocery. I also like that while it has many offerings of an organic/health food nature, there are also many things for those of us who don't limit ourselves to just that genre. I enjoyed my first foray to Fresh Market, upon a referral from a friend who said they carry Asian fish sauce. My first impression is that it is like what Kroger's is trying to become, with their makeovers in the past year or so- specialty deli meats, cheeses, prepared foods and entrees, some international products, and bulk nuts, dried fruits and chocolate. They bake their own bread. They have a sandwich shop and offer paninis and others. there is some sushi, prepackaged, that looks about as fresh as Kroger's. The produce looked good and , as the name implies, fresh, but it didn't seem any fresher than Kroger's. The place was clean and well stocked. Prices generally seemed high-ish. The fresh fish and meat shop seemed to be of high quality and there was a good selection of wines from all over and international beers. It's easy to find at the intersection of 501 and Old Forest Road. I had a good time there. read more

If you are looking for nice, fresh produce, it might be the place for you, but if you are looking to buy your week's groceries, this is not it. Perhaps I didn't know what to expect. Although the produce was nice, it didn't seem that much different from what they have at Kroger and is much more expensive. I ended up not buying anything and went to Kroger for my groceries - turned out to be a waste of my time. read more

They have a cool selection of food and items you can't really find around town. I have purchased produce and seafood from here that was positively rotten. Moldy produce and seafood that had turned (mussels). Double check your items before you buy. Service is fine but sometimes they rush you or seem annoyed. read more

I enjoyed my first visit, but after multiple visits, I learned, it's hit or miss. I bought the cashews and the yogurt covered raisons from the jars, the cashews were mushy and soft and the raisons were rancid, yogurt got stale. Then I tried their already backed chicken, the worst I have ever had in my life! It's not only very fatty, but it's grindy and mushy, just terrible, I gave it to my cat and she wouldn't eat it either. Sometimes their food at the deli is fresh and sometimes it's not. Their parm cheese tastes like wax, it's flat and has no zing to it. They don't even have really delicious breads and their muffins aren't good. For the prices, it isn't that great. read more

I regularly shop twice a week at The Fresh Market and off and on have had issues with the meat market all to do with poor customer service. A couple of weeks ago I asked the person to grind the turkey breast and to take off the skin first so it would not be ground up in the meat. Then I get home and he did just the opposite and ground it up in there. Yesterday was the last straw for me. I always ask for 2 bags of ice because I do not live close and want to keep the food on ice on the way home. Yesterday, I asked for 3 bags of ice and Bill said, "Three?!!" in a shocked voice as if I was expecting too much! Then he walked away and help up two of his fingers and said."Two!" Then he mumbled something as he walked off. He did bring the 3 bags but clearly was not happy to do it. I still shop there but am buying less and less and am doing more shopping at Kroger and plan to shop more online. Again, I am a regular twice a week customer and do not deserve this treatment. read more

My wife arrived at 1 pm and was very surprised that the meat order did not arrive. Why was there no phone call from Fresh Market? We will not return to this store. read more
