Wow! This place is amazing. Cheryl and Dwight are the best hosts. We stopped here on a road trip…read moreup to Prince Edward Island and they were so hospitable and helpful. The room we stayed in was out back in the carriage house...very warm and cozy and clean. Just what we needed. They even allowed us to use their washer/dryer to do laundry. They gave us tips on what to see in St John and where to eat--check out Britt's Pub! The breakfast was one of the best on our trip...homemade cinnamon rolls, an egg casserole, fresh fruit, and good coffee. Loved getting to know Cheryl and Dwight and the other guests. The room was very reasonably priced and the location is a short walk from the heart of St. John. Wish we could have stayed longer. Would definitely go back.

We stayed here while in St John as we always prefer a B&B to a motel or hotel. Nice older building…read morein the centre of Old Town within walking distance to the City Market and lots of restaurants. The owners are friendly and welcoming and seem to genuinely like people. A huge plus in this business. The room we had was full of old items to match the style of the building. Our only issue was that the beds were very high and hard to get in or out of. Our room had a single and a double and the single had two box springs as well as a full sized mattress on the old wood frame. I realize they did this so the two beds would look the same height but it was a challenge to get in to. A very tiny bathroom was in the room which was nice but the shower was very small so if you need space to move around in there you may want to stay in a different room which may have a larger shower stall. The included breakfast was French Toast & Fruit with Bacon on the side. Huge portions and very tasty. We went out to get latte's as soon as we got up as The Earl of Leinster only offers drip coffee and we are addicted to coffee with more teeth then drip can achieve. I would recommend this cute little B&B if you are looking for accommodation in downtown St John.

Our last stop in Nova Scotia was in Digby, land of the scallops. Digby is a small town so we…read moredecided we would look around Digby, not just in town to find a place to stay and that is how we found Cliffside. Architecturally this place is on another planet. It is just huge inside and out. When you come down the driveway you see this giant stone house perched near the cliffs, the Bay of Fundy splashing bellow. Then you walk in the main doors and come into the Great Room, an enormous room with high ceilings, a giant fireplace, paintings, a grand staircase and 4 giant windows overlooking the bay. Off of the Great Room were the Havana Room (a smaller lounge area) the dinning room and the kitchen. All of the bedrooms were upstairs (3 suits and 1 family suit). They have balconies in the Master and Family suits as well as 2 other balconies that can be used by anyone. There is also a viewing platform down a path to the right of the house which has another amazing view. Our host was Diane and she was great. She does not live in the house itself but she does live on the property and was happy to help whenever we needed her. She prepared breakfast every morning at 9am and it consisted of a fruit bowl/platter (based on the number of guests) and home made breads followed by a main course (we had blueberry pancakes, eggs and bacon, french toast). The food was good and we were always full. For our room we were in the East Wing. It was a very nice room with its own bathroom, a Queen bed, TV and all the things you would expect. The bed was nice and soft which we like and we had tons of space which was nice. This place was great but we did have a few issues. There was no air conditioning in the rooms. They have thermostats in the rooms but they can only do heat. The only other concern we had was that breakfast had no selection. We didn't have an issue with this but I can see how someone could have issues if something they were not fond of was served for breakfast. In conclusion, this place was great. It is by far the most extravagant house I've ever stayed in and it had amazing views and service. I would recommend Cliffside to anyone staying near Digby.

Stayed mid-September. Our room was upstairs. It was fun & funky, angular roofline makes for tight…read morefitting ceiling and overall space, shower and toilet right in the room. The bed was a challenge, low because of the low sloping ceiling, difficult for someone next to the wall to get out of in the night when there are two people in it, and it was clear that there was just one place people sat as the mattress (or whatever it was) was permanently squished at the edge in just one place. Loved the cats but didn't really see them as they weren't allowed in many spaces we were. The breakfast room was the living room and it felt weird to go in to the room, shut the door to keep the cats out, and sit at the 2 top awaiting breakfast service. Hosts are vegan which isn't a big deal for us as we typically eat vegetarian, but what I disliked the most was being served a plate of food without any say on what went on it and how much. I don't really care to eat foods that are trying to be something they're not, so I'm not impressed with food science created sausages and eggs that are made with a long list of funky ingredients. I'd rather have a real whole-foods meal with items that are known, think breads/tortillas, beans, whole grains and cereals, fresh fruit and vegetables. I can think of a lot of dishes using these foods that would be vegan and way healthier and delicious than the fake stuff. Overall, it's a fun place to stay but I'm not sure I'd stay again. I like real food and the ability to enjoy the pets if around.
