Yabby Lake, being one of the closest Mornington vineyards to Melbourne with a great reputation for Chardonnay was therefor on our list and I'm glad we made the effort. It was a quick visit, but a delicious one. We settled on some bottles of the Single Vineyard Chardonnay and I had to be retrained from buying the museum release Magnums they had on display. The Red Claw range, at half the price were also a good buy but we were specifically in the market for special bottles we could put away so skipped them this time. The views here are lovely and I hope to return for cheese platters and wine overlooking the vines on a sunny day. Pro tip: If you're here early in the day or need an afternoon pick-me-up after a lot of wine touring, then grab a coffee. The beans are from Market Lane you know. Ooo, fancy!

Might just be that those with more refined palates can find some intricacy there that I missed, or that almost every wine we tasted was recommended to put down for to cellar for some time, but they just didn't knock my socks off. My other friend ordered the canapé platter, which didn't arrive until we'd all almost finished our meals, despite asking several times. The potatoes we ordered arrived as we were finishing our meals. My friends ordered coffees, one strong latte and one soy latte. Both were far too strong and the coffees were given to the wrong person. In short, loud room, terrible service and average food. We were never rushed, and he was always ready to go when we were. He also took some side roads to show us some unexpected views and neighborhoods, since he knew this was our first visit to Melbourne. Indeed, we took a bottle of the Tributo away with us to have with lunch and I enjoyed it even more interspersed with bread, olives, olive oil and anchovies. The cellar door experience is relaxed and friendly. Try a few styles and then visit the restaurant or sit outside during the day with a cheese plate and a bottle of your favourite. There's also jars of jams, chutney and the like to take home. Pro tip: check out the wine already chilled in the fridge for take-away picnic options. There may even be tins of ortiz anchovies in there. Buy some.

The co-winemaker (along with his wife) served us with a refreshing laid-backness to explaining his wine-making and ethos. The wines are grouped in 3 price ranges, so there's something for everyone, however at $26 the 2013 Pinot Noir (Pinots being the main reason we come to the Peninsula) was what went home with us this time.
