An easy stroll through what started as a resident's yard, has been transformed into an even larger space for viewers of all kinds. Privately owned and what appears to still have a home property onsite, Moorten Botanical features over 3,000 species of cacti. Another unique component is the rare Cactarium which is a greenhouse featuring cactus and succulents. Admission is $7 cash or card and there is always staff available to greet guests. A paper map is provided post payment to help navigate the grounds. I recommend sunscreen as a majority of the viewing takes place outside and the sun tends to beat down. Onsite there are a variety of large tortoises in specialty spots enjoying their environment. At the end of the garden, there is a nursery where plants can be purchased along with gardening trinkets. For the value, this is one to not miss! I've been coming here for years since I was a little girl and I enjoy the fact that Moorten sticks to their roots and have kept the layout the same allowing me to feel nostalgia each time I visit. I first visited Moorten Botanical Garden in 2009. My second time was in February 2026. Both times I enjoyed seeing all the different cacti, cactarium and the tortoise. It's been years since I was last here. Then the entrance fee was 5.00 I believe. Now it's 7.00 per person which isn't bad. Killing time in between appointments, this was a perfect way to start. There's street parking out front. I'm not sure if they have a parking lot in the property for visitors. But you'll be ok parking on the street. This place is basically a cactus lovers paradise. Right when you walk in, the cashier is to the left where you pay your entrance fee. Also if you're purchasing anything. A map is given if needed but it's pretty self explanatory just following the trail. It's not a big garden but let's just say it's packed with all sorts of plants from all over the place. The different varieties of cactus are amazing. There's also names plaques to let you know which each ones are. Some seating area scattered along the path. One end of the garden is the covered green house that host many more plants. Same thing, just following the path to see everything. Just be courteous and not touch the plants. There's a public restroom in the corner of a house that's on the property. I'm not sure if someone actually lives there. The main garden is on one side while the other still is part of it but is more of the retail area. Trinkets for the garden or gifts. Potted plants of all sorts. There's also the tortoise as well the doves in their cage. Hours are limited during the summer due to the heat and they're closed on Wednesday. Trying to burn some time before our time on the Aerial Tramway so we came to Moorten Botanical Gardens. It was very easy to spend 30 minutes here though it is small, the reason being a lot of different things to look at in all directions. It's home to the cactarium, a greenhouse for cactus which houses some very rare plants. It's great for photography and because of this you'll find the cactarium in social media posts about Palm Springs as frequently as you'll find midcentury-modern architecture. The Moorten's Mediterranean style house is also worth checking out for the iconic architecture, both of these combined make it a fun stop. You can also rent out the gardens and house for weddings and photoshoots. You can park in the alley next to the gardens but there is also a dirt parking lot very close by most people parked at. read more

What a fun and cute place. It has been on my places to visit list for a while. There was an entrance fee that was reasonably priced. I was pleasantly pleased with the variety of plants and the World's first Cactarium. The Cactarium housed so many varieties of cactus that were very interesting and ones I was not familiar with. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Moorten who was very knowledgeable and took time to take a picture with me and provide some advice on how to care for some of my own plants. Nice place to beat the heat in Palm Springs and visit the World's First "Cactarium". Initially we joined the guided tour, but after a few minutes we broke off to explore at our own pace. The guide definitely meant well, but it felt like being back in middle school science class where there was a pop quiz around every corner. $7 entry fee per person and there was a nice wandering path through the property with various desert regions (Sonoran, Mojave, California, Texas, etc.) and their native plants. Back at the main garden area, there were also birds and lots of plants and succulents for sale. read more

This place was the cutest spot I have gone to! All the plants were so cool to look at and they had a cactarium!!! I have never seen that before. The owners told us how many years it took them to build and create this garden and it's just honestly amazing amd breathtaking. Every plant, all the knowledge these people have in them is genuinely inspiring and left me in awe. Small but mighty! We drove past this garden one day while in Palm Springs on our way to a spectacular hike at the Indian Canyons. Luckily we still had a few more days in the area, so I added Moorten to my list for a possible visit, and we got to is a day or so later. It is very small, but also very affordable. Street parking is the name of the game, so be careful and conscientious. Take your time, take some photos, peep some of the resident turtles/tortoises. We were here for about an hour, which included some sitting and relaxing time, and at the end some perusing the succulents and goods for sale before exiting. For $5, it is a great little drop in spot and something to do in the area that is good for all ages. read more

On our last full day in Palm Springs, we stopped at this humble botanical garden. It is family-owned and houses a TON of cacti and desert plants. We were immediately greeted at the entrance and I believe we must have met Clark Moorten (the owner). He's so personable, funny and spent a few minutes conversing with us while we paid our admission at the counter. It is $5 per adult, $2 for kids 15 or under, and free for children under five years old. It's amazing to think that over 3000 varieties of plants reside here. The garden is loosely divided into regions (i.e. Baja California region, South American region, etc.) which are called out along the pathways. We heeded their advice to take our time and truly appreciate the diversity the garden has to offer. I was in awe of the height of the Oregon Pipe Cactus, the giant leaves of the Agave plants and the spiny trunk of the Madagascar Palm. This garden hosts apparently the world's first Cactarium that is home to hundreds of cacti species. It would have been nice if there were labels with the names of at least some of them, but the lack of didn't detract much from the experience. In addition to the gardens, they have a display of historic gold mine relics, a shop area full of plants for purchase (the Monkey Tail plant is so cute!), a cage of birds and a couple tortoise habitats. However, we missed the tortoises since they were not outside during the winter. It's clear that the Moortens have dedicated so much time and care into maintaining this garden which was established in the 1930s. This is a must go when in Palm Springs! $5 admission is super reasonable. There were SO many cacti and succulent varieties. We spent about an hour walking through and taking photos. We even came across a humming bird and her nest + eggs. There is plenty of street parking, a bathroom onsite, and they sell a variety of cacti/succulents & pots. Wow! What a beautiful gem in the desert. Every year, for our wedding anniversary, we go to a different botanical garden from around this country. They have all been amazing, but this one is the best one yet. We met Clark Moorten, the owner and curator of the estate, and he was the kindest, sweetest, most knowledgeable man we have ever encountered. A very cute botanical garden to learn about the various cacti and agave in different regions! $5 per person and an easy bike ride if you're staying on Palm Canyon Drive. Closes at 5PM! Parking can be scarce and biking around Palm Springs was so pleasant. It's small, but packed with huge plants plus a little greenhouse with the quirky cacti and succulent formations. Crazy to see how wild these plants can grow. It took us about an hour to leisurely explore the gardens and see all there is to offer. My partner has been raving about this place. We finally had the chance to go. EXPERIENCE: Parking: Dirt plaza parking for about 15 cars. Some people also parked on the side as well. Feels: It's in the outer ends of Palm Springs but when you're in the garden it's a quick yet fun place to be. There's a path with plants that are well marked from succulents to cactus. The garden is a self guided trail that has plenty of markers for the plants. There are two tortoises in open habitats and doves to view as well. The retail section includes a wide range of drought tolerant plants and a small selection of interesting pots. Admission is $5, which is a bit steep for the price since you are not likely to stay an hour unless you are doing a photo shoot or serious retail shopping. Palm Springs, Ca. This is a nice get away from the general insanity of downtown PalmSprings. Is it worth five bucks? I would say probably but that is a pretty subjective assessment. Some of the specimens are absolutely gorgeous. The more mature plants have apparently been there for a long time. The variety is limited however, this is a private garden, not a publicly funded horticultural spectacle. The name tags (Keys) are sparse, some being on large rock plaques which is kind of cool. Most plants are not tagged at all, especially the smaller ones. None of the various aloes and mammillaria are tagged. Many of the plants that are tagged are with the common or folksy name not the biological one. This is probably only important to collectors such as myself. There were a few biological tags, why not include both? I'm sure the owner just does it his/her way and that is fine. You can pretty much see the garden in thirty minutes. There are some more common specimens for sale, which are available elsewhere for much less. The owners are present and are happy to answer any questions. read more
