My best friend had a highly negative experience with La Casa in Las Cruces. This organization took my friend on as a client, a woman who was in an abusive relationship. I have read the other reviews here and on google. I wanted to make a few comments. My girlfriend had a weirdly similar experience as to another posters here on Yelp. She also said she had done all these intakes and paperwork for assistance. And that the organization had she constantly re-filling out paperwork that they "had lost'". My friend had an fair experience while at the shelter and tried very hard to advocate for herself while there. The problems started started when my friend just had to return to the bad relationship. She said that many of them had very limited options when leaving the place. And that La Casa was very indifferent to them once they had exited. My friend kept a detailed journal while at the shelter. She told me that she feel discriminated against because she was not Hispanic and did not speak Spanish. My best friend made several good friends among the other woman (an one man) while she was in the there for 3-4 months. She said she over heard female staff at the shelter make remarks about that males had "no business" being housed at the shelter. When I hear stuff like this, I did some research on domestic violence shelters. Most (if not all) get state and federal funding. That funding is contingent on that the organization "not discriminating" when it comes to race or gender. Treating my Caucasian friend differently because she is white and the attitude that "males'" have no place in the shelter environment is illegal. It's probably just a matter of time until this organization is sued and in a courtroom.

I learned so much about the chile peppers from our docent who also runs the gift shop. I cannot even begin to go into the learnings and facts from the Institute. Since the Institute is connected to New Mexico State University, it is clear that academics, scientific findings, and research go into every part of growing the perfect pepper. Highly recommend going here just to get yourself orientated with the chile pepper. You'll come away knowing so much more about the process and types of chile peppers. You can also sample some hot sauces while here as well as purchase your own chile pepper seeds. You can also get a pack of mystery seeds at no cost and see what grows out of the pack - maybe you'll get a NuMex Big Jim (medium heat) or maybe you'll get a NuMex Sandia Select(hot strain)- who knows, and that's what makes it fun. The institute was founded in 1992, but NMSU is the place where Dr. Fabián García began standardizing chile pepper varieties in 1888. Peppers such as Anaheim, Pueblo, and Carolina Ghost all derive from his pepper seeds. Chile pepper research is still conducted at the research center & gardens, where over 150 varieties of chile peppers grow. We got a couple of colorful dwarf ornamental chile pepper plants to try out our green thumbs for only $8, and a multitude of seed packets can also be purchased. We also got to sample some of the hot sauces from Karma Sauce as featured on the show, "Hot Ones".

Most not for profits have much lower prices and are affiliated with a Chursh that supplies them. Not a place I would frequent, and definitely NOT A Christian environment! Gave them 1 star for trying to have decent coffee even though it is Starbucks. Apparently they want to be Starbucks but that would take having enough class to use their own coffee and not steal from the big boys!!!
