It was about a 30 minute drive to Banner Elk where there's a lot more to do/places to eat. We got there around 10:30pm and the office was closed, but our key and room number/instructions were taped to the lobby door in an envelope so we were able to check in without anyone being there which was nice. It's definitely a rural area, there's minimal cell service depending on where you're standing. It's really perfect for disconnecting and getting in touch with nature.

The website has wonderful pictures of cottages and looks super inviting. I'm sure the hosts are great, but their reservation system sucks. Their website does not contain an online reservation form--only a standard contact us form and phone number. So not trusting online forms, I called to make my reservation. I spoke a very lovely woman for nearly 30 minutes who took down my name, phone number and email (which she had from the voice message I'd previously left) told me all about the property and about the town, helped me select a rooms for our group, and even promised to send me more information about the property and the town via email later on. She explained that the rooms were reserved for us and was looking forward to welcoming us "all the way from Chicago" in September. That was in January. Now, it's September and there's absolutely no record of our reservation. Lost. Gone. Ghosted. Apparently, phoned-in reservations don't count because when I inquired about our lost reservation citing this 30 minute phone call we had back in January, she responded with the following: "We get so many phone inquiries that we use the online contact form as a back up so we do not overbook. When those aren't filled out we assume that they have found another place or that their plans have changed. After the form is filled out we send a confirmation and we try to touch base closer to time. I am so sorry that we do not have your reservation." Uh. Wait, what? The location is beautiful--tucked beside the Roaring River in a small valley, with a peaceful and scenic setting. Menus were provided when we sat down, along with an offer for drinks. Although this is a winery, they also serve beer and other beverages. Our server gave us a wine menu but directed us to scan a QR code for the other drink options. Since there's no cell reception, we had to connect to the winery's Wi-Fi first, which felt a little awkward. After all that, the beer menu was quite limited--something that could have been more easily explained up front. The food menu was also limited, which we expected at a winery. None of us ordered wine, but two of us had beers, and we shared the soft pretzel bites with beer cheese dip and a charcuterie board. Both appetizers were presented beautifully and tasted great--we really enjoyed sampling them. After our food and drinks, we walked the grounds. The property is stunning, with accommodations for overnight stays, a pavilion for events, and multiple access points to the river. Overall, this was a wonderful place to relax and catch up with friends. Checkout time is 10 am, but it was midweek and there was literally no one else in the whole resort except one couple in one of the campsites, so we weren't stressing about being a little late getting out of our Rainbow Trout Cabin. We had put our dishes in the dishwasher and taken the trash to the dumpster, and I was zipping up my last suitcase, preparing to take it out the open front door and put it in our car, when the owner came walking up with her dog (which looked like a pitbull/boxer cross - it's large and muscular), OFF LEASH (the resort's rules supposedly require all dogs to be on leash). It was a little before 11 am. She intentionally let the dog run into our cabin, with us inside. She followed it in, yelling angrily -- not at the dog, but at US, shouting that "checkout time was 10 am!" etc. etc. The dog was barking at us, and charged at me, cornering me in the bedroom. I put my suitcase between myself and the dog. Eventually she called it away and let us get out of the cabin and to our car. The cabin was very nice, the river is great, it's a gorgeous spot with good fishing and swimming and a nice playground. But beware of the owner! Also maybe don't bring your dog, since she let hers run around loose. And the tap water smelled like sulfur, not sure what's going on with that.
