The rain on the roof was a nice part, if it had to be raining. Our second trip was in The Mill House because we brought our dog. This is the one pet friendly cabin they have. Our most recent trip was in Deer Run, because our big kid wanted the loft. The loft is very roomy! My mother was from Elkin, so I like to visit the area. Nice day trips to the parkway, Stone Mountain, Mt. Airy, or even Blowing Rock. Of course, downtown Elkin is nice, too! The staff has always been responsive of any issues during any of our stays. I hear the wine tours are great, but we haven't tried any ourselves.

There isn't a wine on the menu that we disliked, and we especially love the Traminette and the Oh Le Deaux (trust me, get this deep fragrant red dessert wine). The food was good, and the owner is really nice and has wonderful stories about his travels. Overall, we have discussed making this a yearly or at least every other year trip for us because of the serene riverside property and the amazing wines. The property by itself is 5 stars, and the wine makes it even more of a fun romantic getaway.

The location is beautiful--tucked beside the Roaring River in a small valley, with a peaceful and scenic setting. Menus were provided when we sat down, along with an offer for drinks. Although this is a winery, they also serve beer and other beverages. Our server gave us a wine menu but directed us to scan a QR code for the other drink options. Since there's no cell reception, we had to connect to the winery's Wi-Fi first, which felt a little awkward. After all that, the beer menu was quite limited--something that could have been more easily explained up front. The food menu was also limited, which we expected at a winery. None of us ordered wine, but two of us had beers, and we shared the soft pretzel bites with beer cheese dip and a charcuterie board. Both appetizers were presented beautifully and tasted great--we really enjoyed sampling them. After our food and drinks, we walked the grounds. The property is stunning, with accommodations for overnight stays, a pavilion for events, and multiple access points to the river. Overall, this was a wonderful place to relax and catch up with friends. The highlights were the scenery and the food, while the downsides were the limited menu options and service that felt less helpful than expected.

Speaking of nature, one evening we returned from dinner and there was a skunk in the grass at the front of the cabin. He wandered away, but it's a good reminder, you are in the great outdoors here.

I was riding up the Blue Ridge Parkway.A friend recommended Park Vista Lodge,so I made a reservation for Thursday night (July 9) The motel is self check-in.I have done this before with no problem.Unfortunately enroute my cell phone died.I arrived and there was no one at the motel.No manager and no guests for the 40(?) unit facility. I waited around for 30 minutes or so to see if anyone surfaced.No one did.I then walked down the hill to the diner and General Store.Everything was closed at 5:00 Very strange. I had no information on how to access my room.Finally I found a person who lived there and some neighbors who kindly were able to contact the owner who walked us through the process of getting into the room. The facility and the room has just gone through a massive recent renovation.Although the room was small,it was very comfortable and nicely furnished. I would hate to show up here at 11:00 at night and find myself in the situation that I was in yesterday evening.
