But for those who know what they want, and are aware of the real world and it's requirements, it offers more than any Ivy League, high brow institution can even begin to. Personally I consider myself beyond successful with accomplishments acquired only through being taught what the real world is like and how to survive in it. I'm not knocking the brainy ones who have worked hard academically to achieve their respective degrees in their desired form of work, who may have also claimed Reavis as their Alma-mater. But I am here to defend the place where I got to realize, and learn, what I am capable of in order to survive in American society. From first grade on I never "fit in" to the accepted curriculum, and was "tolerated" at best, by the teaching community. Until I got into the halls of Reavis where the world opened up for me and I was not only with people of the real world, both student and teacher, but had choices no one knew were lurking in my little brain. I was opened to being able to express and expand the genius concealed inside what the academics said to my parents "Al does not belong here." It was taken as "this kid has a problem" not "He's too smart for this type school." Until I got to Reavis I struggled with fitting into the meaningless and unfruitful forms of education that was offered to the general community. At Reavis my life exploded into the word "opportunity". Yes I had to take what the educated of society told my parents I had to take as classes, but getting that out of the way as quickly and easily as I could I looked forward daily to attending first the basic industrial arts classes and then on to the real shop hands-on classes where I excelled. Where I learned from great men like Caroll Repasey and Bob Moser and others I can't remember at the moment, who could have made twice the money out in the real world. They had a desire and quest to teach those who were willing to learn what they needed to excel in the real world. Money was not the object for these men, as mentioned, they taught me "how to learn" not "what to learn". I can tell you from a lifelong experience with men who have accomplished the "how to learn" that conquering the physical world through "hands-on talent" and being confident in this sort of self knowing has a lot more to offer than book smarts alone. I admire and praise those with doctor's degrees and diplomas that proclaim their dedication to their chosen form of work, but Reavis High School claims more successful and self satisfied individuals because of it's dedication to the education of young adults than can ever be counted or tallied up. I hope and pray, for the sake of society, that Reavis has not changed it's curriculum.

What I do like about this school is that it seems to (contrary to popular demand) cater to their students in a way that many public schools seem to miss. They really take their kids seriously, and although they have a bad rap, it doesn't seem this way to parents. They have a football field (a few blocks away from the school) and the kids are always practicing. The actual school is still in its vintage look, but with modern updates to make sure that they are still caught up with other schools. I use to come around to pick up relatives who went here and often times I would volunteer. All in all, not a bad school, just that sometimes a few rufians mess up the reputation but the school can stand on its own.

The staff is good overall but I know they have a difficult time finding and keeping talented teachers. Most of the really good teachers gravitate to public schools with higher pay. The biggest problem is that some of the math teachers are terrible. It will be interesting to see if any changes are made to personnel in the future. The school has a high enrollment. With this high enrollment comes problems though. The school has some cliques. I know this is a problem at many schools also. There are some families that have taken over all of the parent groups. Whether its the Family Board, the School Board, the Athlete Board, Carnival Board, Facilities Board, the same people are holding power and doing favors for each other. It's nauseating. I suppose if you are in the right clique then everything will be fine. If you are not in the right clique then your children will be treated as second class citizens. I've seen alumni of the school get blackballed because they did not play nice with the power families. Maybe I'm getting carried away but it can be unnerving. The church is nice. It's not the fanciest church in the area but it is clean and inviting. The pastor is always asking for more money but name me a church that isn't asking for money. You can get married, baptized, and have funerals here. There is a big parking lot and they installed a playground which looks really nice. So here are your choices: Send your kids to public school, St Catherine, St Linus, St Gerald, and St Germaine. The good thing is that there are many choices in the Oak Lawn area for elementary education. You will do good with any of them.

The afterschool program is suppose to have engaging activites like puppetry, gym time, arts and crafts. There is no budget for the program. The teacher has to purchase materials from her own pocket. Students become so frustrated with the lack of engagement. The school promises an individualized learning plan, Spanish, drama and art. Spanish was never offered. I never saw an individized learning plan. The students do lots of worksheets throughout the day. The school also engages in practices that are not listed in the handbook. They charged parents with infractions for their students not wearing the entire uniform. Yet, this "monetary infraction" was never stated in the handbook.

There are some serious issues that I hope improves. But as a parent, do your research, ask prying questions, talk to current parents if you can. Teachers/Curriculum Great, our kids are challenged and growing educationally. Many of the teachers have a real passion for these children. Their hearts are in it and it shows! Culture Absolutely love the Christian component. You'll see kids praying at the start of class as well as weekly chapel with singing and praising Facilities/Staff Administration is lacking. School is largely unstaffed other than teachers. Many times I've shown up to school to pick kids up and have found them running through the hallways unsupervised. (Teachers go home at 3:30 sharp!) I know of at least one child that was seriously injured and knocked unconscious while playing unsupervised. Not secure/safe. The door has a buzzer and intercom but there is no way to verify who is entering the school. Press the intercom, they ask "who is it" and you can say almost anything, they will buzz you in. Not safe. A camera system should be added to the school, Amazon sells them for very cheap Gym Unheated in the winter time, uncooled in the summer time. VERY uncomfortable and there are no plans to correct the climate. Parents have voiced concerns about this for years but have been largely ignored by administration. In the summer time, the kids are walked to a nearby park (sometimes through an alley!!) where they were approached by dogs. Thankfully no one was injured Leadership (or lack thereof) There is no strong leadership presence at the school. Due to several scandals involving the current headmaster and inappropriate relationships with parents/staff, the board of the school is looking to replace him. Before the scandals, he seemed disconnected from the day 2 day anyway. Some days he's approachable, other days not so. It's unfortunate, because we're all paying for a private education and should feel comfortable in approaching leadership with questions and concerns. Even when concerns are shared, there is rarely any serious follow up, we don't even get an acknowledgement of "I have received your feedback" Just dead silence No lunch served You have to provide your own lunch - but there's no refrigerator for storage and no microwave for re-heating food. (Huh?!) This isn't 1984 Communication Issues Mid-year, rumors were spread regarding a large tuition increase. Parents sought out headmaster to find out if it was true. He avoided the topic and didn't address it for almost a month, forcing parents into the school's imposed re-enrollment deadline without information needed to make a re-enrollment decision. Then the headmaster held a meeting where he condescended and sniped at the parents, dodged questions, then ultimately confirmed the tuition increase. Apparently, the school is running a deep deficit. The "Cambridge Board" (consisting of the headmaster's dad, brother and cousin) were brought in to discuss tuition and integrity issues with school leadership and plans for the future. Tons of empty promises were given by the board, with no follow through or delivery Mass Exodus of current parents In talking with several parents in passing, communication issues, scandals, a disengaged headmaster who smiles on Mondays, condescends on Tuesdays, ignores parents on Wednesdays...is a bit too much. Many committed parents who have been at Cambridge for multiple years, have refused to reenroll their kids at Cambridge. Some parents have taken their kids out of school mid-year due to so many issues. The kindergarten class lost at least 4 students throughout the year Aftercare/Ambassador's club This is nothing more than a babysitting service where kids run around the gym, watch movies and sometimes do their homework. Many times, the homework is incorrect as the aftercare staff doesn't seemed equipped to help the children adequately. Overall, be careful of what's promised. Like the rest of the parents, you'll be told of all the grand things that will be offered to your child. Some of it will be delivered, but based on my experience, much of it won't.... Be careful, go in with your eyes wide open

What truly sets Christian Hills apart is that it is so much more than a school, it's a genuine community. She frequently yells into the microphone rules that she creates on a whim. When you ask her a question or express concern about the mistreatment of the patrons she is rude and dismissive. The volunteer staff are not trained properly and often skip patrons to service others (their favorites). They limit the number of games you can play/purchase because they lack the supplies to properly service all the patrons. And a fight broke at the start of a game. I've been attending off and on for the past 3 months and I recommend that you do not waste your time, energy, or money at this location. Alot of regulars that I encountered stated that they would not return either because of the mistreatment and inconsistency they encountered. DON'T WASTE YOU TIME OR MONEY!

I was then, and have always been welcome by their cordial secretaries, Mrs. Kubick and Mrs. Rose. I was instantly invited for a school tour and was able to witness first hand many neurons firing among the students. I truly believe this environment to be conducive to high educational level, high spiritual standards, as well as a high sense of commitment to one another. At St. Bruno, the teachers are extremely dedicated to the student growth as a whole. And the rest of the staff enthusiastically participates in their continued asuccess. I was surprised to learn how the eight graders actively interacted with the students in Kindergarden, and how the school dynamics allowed for the school building to feel like a safe and joyful home. I highly believe that the best gift for my children is their education. And, I will do everything in my power for them to get the best! Therefore, as a mother of two now, I highly recommend you this magnificent school!!
