This school is jointly owned and run by four Catholic Parishes in the south suburbs: St. Elizabeth Seton Parish (also the parish on whose grounds the school resides), St. Julie, St. Stephen, and St. Francis Parishes. It's a family business, so that isn't going to change. But that feels like such a tiny part of my Hello experience- maybe a half dozen emails a year? The teachers do a great job communicating with parents but it isn't primarily on email. It's in person at pick up or drop off, it's notes home (sometimes handwritten!), it's three detailed parent-teacher conferences each year, and it's the option to visit on "take your family to school" days. If you are online desperately trying to read between the lines to figure out what will work for your family (I've been there!), set up a tour and meet Ms. Natalee. You won't regret it.

The prices became higher and higher with increases, but the environment and teachers made it a wholesome and good experience for most of us. The drawback was the outside gym classes in the grassy area where there's a parking lot now, and having to go out to the mobile classrooms in the thick of winter... and the stocking regulations in winter weren't all that fun either. The cafeteria used to overcharge and not provide good nutritive options, never mind for vegetarians. Gym class was basic and not equipped with any particularly exciting curriculum nor equipment. We didn't used to have modern PCs nor computer classes, even though it was beginning to become more and more popular in other schools. The sisters live next door in their convent, there's a senior citizen home as well, where older sisters or civilians reside their last few years or months of their lives. Peaceful surroundings, excessive acreage we were made to navigate during the yearly walkathon. Good times.

I am a happy and successful graduate of Reavis High. It offers more than just a place to fulfill…read moreyour pre-college requirements. It may not be the ideal place of higher educational accomplishments on your list of credits for those seeking some pencil pushing no talent work environment. But for those who know what they want, and are aware of the real world and it's requirements, it offers more than any Ivy League, high brow institution can even begin to. Personally I consider myself beyond successful with accomplishments acquired only through being taught what the real world is like and how to survive in it. I'm not knocking the brainy ones who have worked hard academically to achieve their respective degrees in their desired form of work, who may have also claimed Reavis as their Alma-mater. But I am here to defend the place where I got to realize, and learn, what I am capable of in order to survive in American society. From first grade on I never "fit in" to the accepted curriculum, and was "tolerated" at best, by the teaching community. Until I got into the halls of Reavis where the world opened up for me and I was not only with people of the real world, both student and teacher, but had choices no one knew were lurking in my little brain. I was opened to being able to express and expand the genius concealed inside what the academics said to my parents "Al does not belong here." It was taken as "this kid has a problem" not "He's too smart for this type school." Until I got to Reavis I struggled with fitting into the meaningless and unfruitful forms of education that was offered to the general community. At Reavis my life exploded into the word "opportunity". Yes I had to take what the educated of society told my parents I had to take as classes, but getting that out of the way as quickly and easily as I could I looked forward daily to attending first the basic industrial arts classes and then on to the real shop hands-on classes where I excelled. Where I learned from great men like Caroll Repasey and Bob Moser and others I can't remember at the moment, who could have made twice the money out in the real world. They had a desire and quest to teach those who were willing to learn what they needed to excel in the real world. Money was not the object for these men, as mentioned, they taught me "how to learn" not "what to learn". I can tell you from a lifelong experience with men who have accomplished the "how to learn" that conquering the physical world through "hands-on talent" and being confident in this sort of self knowing has a lot more to offer than book smarts alone. I admire and praise those with doctor's degrees and diplomas that proclaim their dedication to their chosen form of work, but Reavis High School claims more successful and self satisfied individuals because of it's dedication to the education of young adults than can ever be counted or tallied up. I hope and pray, for the sake of society, that Reavis has not changed it's curriculum.

The teachers usually listen to parent complaints and try to stop bullies, The teachers usually get along with the students, except for the ones who act up. Mostly accessible. The church has a ramp going in and out of its doors and they also have an elevator. Most people will help others. The staff is good overall but I know they have a difficult time finding and keeping talented teachers. Most of the really good teachers gravitate to public schools with higher pay. The biggest problem is that some of the math teachers are terrible. It will be interesting to see if any changes are made to personnel in the future. The school has a high enrollment. With this high enrollment comes problems though. The school has some cliques. I know this is a problem at many schools also. There are some families that have taken over all of the parent groups. Whether its the Family Board, the School Board, the Athlete Board, Carnival Board, Facilities Board, the same people are holding power and doing favors for each other. It's nauseating. I suppose if you are in the right clique then everything will be fine. If you are not in the right clique then your children will be treated as second class citizens. I've seen alumni of the school get blackballed because they did not play nice with the power families. Maybe I'm getting carried away but it can be unnerving. The church is nice. It's not the fanciest church in the area but it is clean and inviting. The pastor is always asking for more money but name me a church that isn't asking for money. You can get married, baptized, and have funerals here. There is a big parking lot and they installed a playground which looks really nice. So here are your choices: Send your kids to public school, St Catherine, St Linus, St Gerald, and St Germaine. The good thing is that there are many choices in the Oak Lawn area for elementary education. You will do good with any of them.
