A few years ago, I visited Morrell Metalsmiths during an Open Studio tour, where my family and I were captivated by the blacksmithing demonstrations. Fast Forward a few years through a pandemic, and I needed a unique gift for my dad's birthday and remembered that Morrell Metalsmiths offered blacksmithing courses. I booked us spots in their 1-day "Taste of Blacksmithing" course.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear that our instructor, Justin, was not only a skilled blacksmith but also an engaging and patient teacher. His passion for the craft was obvious, and he made sure everyone had a fun and informative experience. There were about 5-6 students and 1 instructor. We each shared a forge with another student but had our own anvils that were adjusted for our heights.
Throughout the course, we each crafted a functional and well-designed fire poker (photo attached), which I have since put to good use. My only feedback to myself after using it a few times, is that I should have gone with a slightly shorter design but it's a good length for bonfires. I think that the end result was still impressive, considering it was my first attempt at blacksmithing and it is feels good to use a tool that you made. Despite the challenges we faced as beginners in the course, Justin was always there to provide guidance and encouragement as well as guide us through fixing our mistakes so we all went home with a functional piece.
One thing to note is that communication with Justin may require some patience, as he can be quite busy. However, rest assured that he will respond to your messages. Additionally, due to the popularity of the classes and the small class sizes, you may need to book your spot a few months out. Also if its a cold day, dress in layers as it gets hot quickly when you are working.
Overall, the "Taste of Blacksmithing" course at Morrell Metalsmiths was an unforgettable experience that left me eager to continue exploring the world of blacksmithing. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking for a unique, hands-on experience that you'll remember for a lifetime. Whether you're an aspiring blacksmith or simply seeking a fun and educational activity, Morrell Metalsmiths will not disappoint.
