Well, time gets away from you. And though I've explored more of this beautiful states than many locals have, I finally crossed off the famed Million Dollar Highway off the ole bucket list. Good golly miss molly, this drive is something else. Something magical, something spectacular, something majestic. Something that can actually leave you speechless. For me, that's the Million Dollar Highway. The winding roads through the San Juans, each passing turn as jaw-dropping as the previous. Whether commuting South from Ouray to Silverton, or North from Silverton to Ouray, this stretch of America is simply surreal. You're missing out if you don't stop at Red Mountain Pass, the highest point of the drive. The lookout point gazing over the Red Mountains was something I didn't expect to blow me away. I love driving. And there's a lot of this country I haven't seen. But this, the Million Dollar Highway, is iconic. It must, I repeat, MUST be experienced not once, but many times. Dare I say, a million times? We need to honor those who built this road. They risked their lives in harsh conditions. And we're left with unadulterated beauty. So much beauty. America, the beautiful. This does not disappoint. We did the drive in early September 2023 so there was no snow or icy conditions, even when climbing up to 11,000+ feet. The road is windy in spots and you're right on the edge of the mountain with no guardrail at points but honestly it is not that bad. I am scared of heights and have recurring dreams of plunging off a mountainside in a car and I was totally fine with this drive, only clutching the "oh sh!t" bar in the car once or twice lol. The 12 mile stretch between Silverton and Ouray is the true million dollar highway but the entire thing all the way up to ridgeway is gorgeous. I'd recommend taking it from Durango to Ridgeway (about a 2 hour drive one way) to experience the full splendor.

Sometimes we go just to read in a different environment. The reviews cannot rave more. But, having seen many libraries, I can assure you this was fine, but not overly incredible. This place was swarming with kids and parents, very few of which were masked. For some reason, that bothers me in places like libraries. There were also at multiple families who brought in their takeout lunches and were eating their lunches and walking around licking their fingers as their kids were running around. It just seemed more like a community rec center than a library. Kids were playing tag, running all over the place and it was honestly mayhem. Good luck trying to read in that place! We were there about 2 hours and there were no fewer than 100 people in the kids area while we were there. Having just spent a week in Flagstaff, AZ and visiting their library many times over the week, they required masks and limited capacity. This was obviously not the case here. It seemed disorderly. The play structure was neat, but kids were left to play and were not being kind to one another, telling others they couldn't come into the play area, making my 7yo and 9yo feel very unwelcomed. I did find a sweet parking spot outside and the machine charged me for a full 3 hours with a glitch, so I paid the reasonable (but annoying to pay what you didn't ask for) $4.50 for our library trip. There's also a convenient parking garage across the street you can use, also payment required, as is all of downtown Telluride.

They are very helpful and have lots of literature on the area to hand out. Whether people are asking about lodging or hiking trails or fishing or shopping, the ladies at the front counter always had some great tips to give. I also loved that they were able to use the space to display a fantastic and huge Creede model-very cool! I will definitely continue to stop by as any of the nearby ranches you can rent cabins at have no signal and no internet access. Also, you never know what questions may pop up! In my opinion, Allison is a world-class children's librarian in that she knows how to really engage her audience on a first name basis--I suspect she could have majored in child development or the dramatic arts by the way she performs stories aloud. I recommend bringing your toddler to this program even if I had to put a mask on my child and fly across the country to see it. It was a such blessing to listen to Heather et al accompany Allison's oration with a violin and viola pair--what a dream team. What I personally like most about this library are the periodical selections on the subtopics of investing and aviation. I enjoy watching AARP members researching investments on nearby tables as if their lives depended on the effort. I also like the DVD and CD selection in the basement. If I had believed my brother or knew the town was this amazing, I think I would have visited sooner!
