Right before Christmas I was at a concert in the Rathaus and we decided to eat at Centimeter rather than navigate the crowds at the huge Christmas Market in front of the Rathaus. Of course we should have known Centimeter would be crowded too. I ordered one of my favorite dishes at Centimeter - the well-stocked Holzhackerteller consisting of a beef cutlet, chicken steak, roasted potatoes, corn on the cob, and a fried egg. Totally filling and tasty! My friend got their famous Schaufel of Mischmasch which is actually served in a shovel. Mischmasch is a dish originating in the southern Balkans that can consist of many different foods depending on one's personal recipe but it always has roasted potatoes, onions & paprikas (peppers) as a base. A flavorful Mischbier was the perfect liquid accompaniment. And though there were many people in Centimeter, service was fine and we were glad we stopped in here for a meal after the nearby concert.

I felt like an Austrian princess the entire time, with staff on hand to catch a napkin before it fell to the floor and live piano music for the duration of our meal. Our meal started with a selection of freshly baked bread, two types of butter, and amuse bouche. Appetizers were steamed broccoli with bulgar/ smoked eel greaves/ etc and the lobster with pickled veal tongue in a lobster bisque and crispy rice with marinated palm hearts. Both were exquisite, especially the lobster. I savored every bite, especially knowing that it would be a rare find back in my new home of Berlin. For our main courses, I had the Pike Perch with asparagus/ citrus lemon/ saffron and my husband had the Arctic Char. For dessert, we opted for both the Milk and Honey. Milk was burnt milk ice cream with cardamom, dried barberry, Beetroot granule, peanut cream, roasted milk, Amaranth cress and crispy oat. Honey was cookies with Mara de Bois strawberries, dehydrated chocolate mousse, rose jelly, honey cream, and fried batter pearls. Both were, for lack of a better word, also exquisite. On top of all this food, the chef also sent out a couple of additional dessert bites, which went great with our decaf coffee. If you have a special occasion to celebrate, or if you just want to "treat yo self," Le Ciel is a great place for it. To date, this was one of the best birthday dinners I've had.

The bread and butter they provide was ordinary. For my main dish I ordered the pasta with cabbage. The description of this dish sounded plain but I was looking forward to how they would execute it. Eh....pasta was el dente but the pasta tasted sweet, like a desert. Not my thing. We ended with a dessert, which was an orange creme brûlée. Good but nothing exceptional. In particular, I wanted to find a place that was somewhat flying under the radar yet could deliver a superb dining experience. [aend] was one such place that caught my eye and I decided to visit it on our second night in the city. Overall, there was plenty to like about many of the dishes coming from the open kitchen, although some didn't quite hit the impact that we were expecting. The kitchen is led by a young chef Fabian Günzel. It was nice to see him bring some of the dishes in person and explain how he put them together. There is a full course tasting menu available at €265 per person and a shorter option at €225 per person (each option with a €60 supplement for wagyu); we chose the full course without wagyu. The menu at [aend] describes two principal ingredients that go into each dish. The starter bites were quite promising, especially the corn "taco" with langoustine inside that Jun enjoyed very much or the playful take on chawanmushi with whey and king crab. The best parts of the tasting course were in the middle. The salmon trout with parsnip was quite delicious, especially with smoked eel added, and the sole "petit bateau" (using the sole fish from Brittany) and morel mushroom formed a wonderfully rustic dish that I kept thinking about for a few days after our dinner. The wild caught turbot (another fish from Brittany), accompanied by artichoke and tonka bean, was also expertly cooked and the white asparagus from Burgenland with caviar was a match made in heaven. On the other hand, a few dishes missed the mark even though Jun and I appreciated chef Fabian's attempt to combine seemingly incompatible ingredients in an ingenious way. The pikeperch was already delicious by itself, but the addition of poached oyster subtracted from instead of adding to the fish. Another puzzling dish was veal; it came with coffee sauce to emphasize earthy flavor so did it really need king crab on top? Among the desserts, I liked the first dish with Thai mango and coconut the best. On the other hand, despite its stunning presentation, the chocolate and caramelized banana with Steinpilz mushroom powder didn't leave quite the impression that I was hoping for. Getting a reservation at [aend] was relatively easy, and I was pretty surprised that the dining room was not very full on a Friday night. Speaking of the dining room, we liked the minimalistic décor with fun contemporary artworks on the wall that gave the vibe that the restaurant was not taking itself too seriously like other white tablecloth fine dining restaurants around the city. The wooden tables with full utensils in drawers in front of each diner was also a nice touch. Jun and I also complemented our meal with a wine pairing (€145 per person for the full course); overall, the pairing was thoughtfully curated, showcasing terroir-driven and food-friendly wines from Austria as well as other parts of Europe. Situated at Gasometer Towers, Cenaro fits perfectly as a choice for lunch-and-shopping-forgotten-needed-goods-before-going-back-to-the-office situations. It still offers lunch at 3 pm and, despite the few waiters working there, service is quick. Two main courses and two draft beers (meaning a week-lunch for two people) will cost you about 25 euro.

A cool thing was you could see the kitchen and take a look at the chef, while he prepares your meal. Anyways we had a coupon for two burger and so we would try them. The waiter was very nice and friendly and we had our drinks within seconds. So until here everything was fine. But then we saw the chef preparing our burger. He was done and just put them on a table, for the waiter to pick them up. Then he was done with his job and just sat down and started to smoke a cigarette. My girlfriend and I look at each other because we were pretty sure those burgers were made for us, because there were not a lot of other people around. But we waited and waited, while the waiter was handing out drinks to other people or talking to his colleagues. My girlfriend started to be nervous and said, we would wait longer those burgers would be cold. A few more minutes later the waiter noticed that the burgers were ready and brought them to our table. Of course they were cold and the fries were already hard. That upset me because the burger itself looked really nice (double, bacon and cheese hmmmmm). So we called the waiter and told them our meal was cold! He nodded his head and mumbled an apology. Gave the burgers and fries back to the chef who just stood up, put all the stuff in the microwave and gave it back to him. The result, the fries wobbly and the burger had warm salad and the juice of the meat and tomatoes soaked through the whole bread and made the burger break apart when I picked it up. I was really angry at this point. I did not spend money on those burgers but it was still a waste of food, time and energy. And the chef did not care at all. The burgers were shitty and warmed up in a mircowave. NO NO NO NO!!!! Not even for free!!!
