Nice waitress but service was slow. We had 5 in our party. After ordering, it took about 45 minutes for our food to come out & then we did not receive our food at one time. After the first order came out they had almost finished their meal before the last person was served. Quality of food was poor. Some of the food was cold while some was overdone. Enjoyed dining here for my Dad's birthday. It has been 15 years or so since I last visited the school house. Our waitress was amazing, sweet, and on top of everything. Plus she had only worked there for 2 weeks. The catfish is perfect and loved the cornbread and beans. The memorabilia of old farm tools, bottles and more will keeps your eyes wondering. Will never go here again. I went there with a friend from out of town. Ordered my steak medium rare and it came out medium well. I apologized and told the server that it was a bit overdone. A few minutes later, the owner brings the steak back out and slaps it on the table, ranting and raving that I was wrong and it was fine. She continued the verbal assault as we left. After reading other reviews that say the same exact thing, I believe that most of their customers must be older, loyal regulars. Once they're gone, I can't see them remaining in business. Well I decided to give them another shot... Not off to a great start! Asked for melted butter with my crab claws and got this nasty size cup of butter, not melted butter, but squeeze butter. The server made a face when I asked that it actually be melted, but she did melt it. Dinner Again was a huge disappointment! Frozen shrimping melted butter was their idea of shrimp scampi???? I really liked it here, it gave me goosebumps.. and I felt that the spirits were kind of talking to me, the food was good Not the greatest but the steaks were really good. My daughter took me there and we had a nice time after seeing her in college. She came with a friend and we went there to visit her, 2 yrs ago. I thought of writing about it now cause someone asked me about it.. we sat in the room where two teachers we were told were shot. I can not believe that someone was shot there. well you know old buildings.. Alabama is well known for a lot of hauntings and ghosts.. well I hope you can visit, the school house sits amongst a cemetery which to me is good I love to talk to those who have died..they have interesting stories to tell since 1902. read more

One of Troy's best kept secrets! This awesome eatery is located in an old schoolhouse on the Elba Highway. Kind of spooky surroundings, since there appear to be some gravestones in the adjacent lot. They bring you fried cornbread and beans as a appetizer much like they bring you chips and salsa and a Tex-Mex restaurant. This is a great introduction the down home style of the Mossy Grove as you dine in a room with lots of old farm implements and other knick-knacks. It's sort of like an more authentic, dinner-only Cracker Barrel. My favorite two entrees are the chicken fingers and the pork chop. They also have a decent steak. The salads leave a bit to be desired, but overall this is a MUST VISIT in Troy, Alabama. In my book it's second only to Sister's as far as Troy restaurants go, and the menu items of these two joints are so different you absolutely must visit both! read more

We came at 8:35 p.m. and the sign said they closed at 9:00. There was a big fiasco about whether or not they were going to serve us. The waitresses got into an argument about who "had" to serve us. One stated emphatically that she was not staying late and that if she had to serve us then she couldn't vacuum. We felt pretty embarrassed and like we were not welcomed. Finally the ?manager? sent everyone to the back. When our waitress returned she was pleasant but no help on food suggestions (wanted to go home?). However, that being said, the food was great. We had catfish and the steak. I've had the pork ribeye before and it was delicious! It's not on the menu so you have to ask for it. My recommendation is to come early. read more

4 stars if u like country food. Good seafood, great steaks. Large portions. Quaint with friendly, young wait staff. They give you navy beans and hush puppies with ur water when u sit down. If you are in the area then you need to go here to experience the Great Northern beans, exquisite hush puppies, and their special pepper sauce to eat with both the beans and hush puppies. The school house is on the list of 100 places to eat in AL for a unique and super meal. The catfish was very good but 1 fillet would have been plenty. Trainwreck on the struggle bus!!! Owner completely destroyed our experience as she was the cook and we ordered 5 steaks. She missed on 4 of the 5 temps and then blames the server for writing them down wrong!!! We also had a grilled chicken finger order we sent back because it was burnt and she claimed we ate most of it....... what she doesnt know is as we handed it to server we took a pic of the burnt fingers that shows how many was left on plate... all but one she said that the girl ate most everything on plate.... she took $3.32 off the check for the girl that ordered them. Thankfully their is a half shell right down the street with great owners that took good care of us once we had to leave with people still hungry. We have been long time patrons of MGSH,and have always loved the food and atmosphere! UNTIL RECENTLY! Apparently it is under new management! My wife and I ordered take out, got home with it several mes away to find half the order was missing! They put beans and corn bread in each order and those were even missing! No big deal, till we called to get the rest of our order ready to be picked up! We were basically cussed out by the owner and told it wasn't their problem and they were busy and didn't have time! Absolutely awful. The only redeeming thing about this restaurant are the white beans and hush puppy bits. The coleslaw was nice. But...The fried oysters I had were completely tasteless. My husband's seafood platter had four different items and tasted all the same. To me, just because something is fried doesn't mean it has to taste like cardboard with batter. The waitress was friendly but it sure didn't compensate for the terrible food. So: if you do go there, stick to the white beans, coleslaw, and hush puppies. Eat lots of that. First experience with this restaurant. Nice, quaint entrance and was greeted promptly and seated right away. Very nice decor, once your eyes become adjusted to the low light and dark setting. We both ordered plates with catfish and seafood. The catfish was one of the worst that I have eaten. The rest was tolerable. Our baked potato would not melt the butter. The waitress placed the check on our table just as we were finished eating and walked away with saying a word. She came back later and ask if we wanted a dessert. The food is always delicious and the staff always treats their guests like family at The Mossy Grove Schoolhouse Restaurant in Troy, Alabama. The food is affordable and the menu provides a good variety to suit pretty much anyone's taste. All of the wait staff is great as well. Our favorite waitress, Sylvia, has been working at Mossy Grove for many years and she is truly a character. She loves all of the guests and is one of the best people I've ever known. If you decide to visit, ask for Sylvia at least once. She truly is a hoot. The food is not too pricey and the atmosphere is very charming. The restaurant is an old school building and the walls are decorated with vintage and antique items. The hush puppies and beans are listed in "100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die," released by the Alabama Department of Tourism and they are mouthwateringly delicious! Watch your bill very close. We had 4 adults and 1 child in our party. The child did not even eat and we were charged an automatic 20% gratuity on the bill. I then even asked if I disagree with the amount of the gratuity and manager said it does not matter because it is automatic. So basically at Mossy Grove if you have 5 people in your party and then the server does not have to be very attentive because they will make there money regardless. These people are unbelievable. When I talked to the manager and ask that we only had 4 eating, the reply was the child occupied a seat. Are you kidding. How thoughtful ? Also check this, They charged the 20% Gratuity on the total bill including TAX. So basically if you are in a city where sales tax goes up then server tips go up at this restaurant. Then regarding the gratuity on top of the TAX. The reply was this is the way it has been done for 28 years here. These people are complete idiots and do not care about patrons. PLEASE STAY AWAY. Fantastic food and a really cool atmosphere! The wait staff is awesome and will treat you like family. I recommend the ribeye or the catfish. Both are great but they have their own special steak marinade and it is definitely something everyone should try! The building itself is good reason to visit here. Friends took my husband and I there Saturday night. I ordered friend oysters and fried shrimp. The oysters were so over cooked there was nothing there but the breading. The shrimp was not fresh shrimp. The food tasted like old grease. Both my husband and friend were sick on their stomachs after eating there.
