I adore and admire such architectural beauty. The Jerónimos Monastery is designed in Late Gothic Manueline style and is marvelous to look at. The size of this monastery is massive that easily it takes 1-2 hours to really get a feel of this place. I visited the inside as well as the surrounding areas. My favorite part was walking through the cloisters of the interior gardens. Even though it's Manueline style of architecture, you will see Moorish/ Eastern elements in the motifs. If you love religious institutions, architecture, or a city's cultural elements...This place is a must if you are in Lisbon, Portugal. Side Note: Instead of purchasing the ticket separately, get the lisboa card for 24 hours or 72 hour, depending on how long you are staying in Lisbon. I asked her a simple question as to where to go.. which line to line up in for the church/ monastery She then proceeded to insult me in Front of others .She talked down to me as if I was stupid. Even if you have only one day in Lisbon, you have to visit this place. Beautiful, elegant, ornate, grand and awe-inspiring describe it, but don't quite capture it all. The Manueline style is uniquely Portuguese, so don't write this off even if you have visited a million churches already in Europe. While you need to pay to enter the monastery and cloister, the church to the right is free, courtesy of God. But He does get off work at 5, so don't go too late. The rest of the monastery is well worth a visit. If you buy the Lisboa card (available at the tourist info at the airport) you can get in for free. Free admission is also available the first Sunday of the month. Otherwise, most tours come in the morning, so if you get there in the afternoon, you may get to enjoy the monastery with relatively fewer people. Which is really the best way to enjoy it: beautiful and tranquil. And oh, your visit to Belem isn't complete without a stop at the nearby cafe for some pasteis de nata. read more

Jeronimos monastery is one of the attractions to see while in Lisbon Portugal! It's close to the Belem tower as well as the Pasteis de Belem. There's two different entrances one for the archaeology side which I loved. You can get some good photos there of the courtyard. The other side is the church which is gorgeous. The best way to get tickets is to scan the QR code that they have in the front and then go ahead and purchase the tickets. Or just purchase them in advance. The people at the entrance and the line control people are definitely not the nicest. That was pretty much the only bad thing that we ran into here. But otherwise definitely go. It is a sight to see! And you might even run into some dancers outside, as well as piña colada stands! read more

Since I was able to visit this space in November there weren't too many crowds, so the peacefulness of the galleries was able to descend on my travel jangled nerves like a balm. The church portion (igreja) was lovely and free (except for the sacristy which was a 1 or 2 Euro charge). The decorative portions of the church are lovely and very different from the styles I'm more accustomed to. PLUS Vasco da Gama's tomb, so that's cool. You then pay (maybe 6 euros) to go into the monastery itself and you can see why it's a UNESCO world heritage site. So ornate and lovely! I spotted a grasshopper gargoyle who looked like an alien so he was probably my favorite. I found the 2nd floor galleries (in the cloister) around the courtyard to be my favorite area. So restful and probably cool on a warm day. There is a small gift shop. And for modern history, I learned that this is where the Treaty of Lisbon was signed (2007) which was the first step in creating the European Union. read more

This is a must do while in Lisbon. What a beautiful building, in just a lovely part of town. There is so much to see and do in the area of Belem. We were lucky enough to go here on a Sunday, when Church was in session. We were delighted to hear some beautiful organ playing and be able to take in the grandeur of the church. Although we did not have time to do the full tour of the monastery, it was really special and fortuitous to be able to see The church and moreover free of charge. read more

The 5 stars are for the CHURCH. We decided to skip the monastery, with it's long long LONG line. The church was amazing. We saw the statues of Camoes and Vasco De Gama bathed in beautiful light from the stained glass windows. And that manueline carving!!! Oh my goodness- it's gorgeous. The church is a marvel. It's free. Go in the Sacristry as well- it's only 1.50 and well worth it. The Sacristry is very lovely and a very special space. I sat in the pews at the front of the church- you really get a sense of scale and the power of this place if you do that. Do be quiet. It is a sacred place. Photos are allowed, but they had to keep reminding people to be quiet- which was sad. You'd hope tourists could be a little reverential in such a beautiful and sacred place. read more

Every time when I was in Lisboa, I ended up visiting Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. It is an amazing architecture that worth repeat revisit, as it is a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. I usually always walked through Church of Santa Maria since it is free admission. Even without going inside the building, the exterior quite grand and spectacular. I know I will be back again next time when I am in town.... My visit to Lisboa would never be complete without having some pastéis de nata at Pastéis de Belém which is located right across from Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. read more

Not to be missed! I'm not easily impressed or amazed by churches, monasteries or architecture in general. But boy, this place really amazed me. After getting out of the tram (only a 25min ride from the Praca do Comercio) it catches your eye immediatly. It's quite an impressive size. Also impressive was the line to get in. If possible, you should buy tickets in advance to save some time. But once inside it's surprisingly empty, but mostly because it is quite a big area and people spread out, so it never felt packed. The Monastery is over 500 years old and took just about 100 years to complete (!). Not counting some additions later on. Impressive views every single step and there's so much details everywhere. Be it on the floor, the walls, the several statues or the amazing gargoyles. The dining hall is also quite a sight....size-wise at least with an amazing painting backing it. There are several tombs on site too (the one of Alexandre Herculano being the easiest to access). We spent about a good three hours here...which is much more than we planned. A great great way to spend half a day in Lisbon. Not to be missed! read more

We entered both the church (free) and the monastery (a fee). Both were remarkable and it was interesting to gain perspective on the history of the area. A tour guide probably would have helped but we were jet lagged having just arrived from the States so this was a bit of a push for us. You can walk here from the other waterfront tourist attractions but be aware that you can only crossover the road at particular pedestrian bridges (the road is divided so pedestrians do not interrupt the flow of traffic). read more

Perhaps I would have liked this place better if we had done our homework and purchased tickets ahead of time. Despite being there right when it opened we waited in a glacially slow line for 45 minutes to buy tickets. I am not sure I have seen as many tour buses in one place in my life - thus the place was absolutely swarming with tour groups. The architecture of the cloister and the church are interesting as is the VdG (Vasco da Gama) crypt but I am not sure this was worth the time and effort. read more

Beautiful! A must see while in Lisboa. Entry to the cathedral is free and entry into the rest is €10 but so worth it! Inside and out this place is just jaw dropping. The process to buy tickets to enter is a bit confusing. Walk towards the main entrance of the museum and you will see 2 lines to purchase tickets at an automated kiosk. They accept both cash and card so that's a nice option! We opted out of going to the museum because we were starving and wanted to make sure we had plenty of time to see the beauty of the cathedral and inside grounds. But it was an extra €8 to get the package deal for both museum and Monastery. I can imagine how busy this place gets during peak season, but we haven't really seen many tourists in December. So we were able to get in right away and go around the grounds a few times. The architecture is beautiful and the fact that it has been preserved so well for so many thousands of years is amazing. read more

The best value is to get the Museum, Church Combo ticket but, there are only available until around 1:00. It is a wonderful place to learn about history. Mosteiros dos Jerónimos (Jeronimos Monastery), founded in 1501 by King Manuel I on the Praça do Imperio, is an impressive work requiring a century to complete. Luckily, it was spared major damage during the 1755 earthquake, and it's said to be an outstanding example of Manuelian architecture. It's a must-see. Taking the advice of other visitors, we bought our tickets using the Tiket app on our smartphones and then arrived early so as to avoid a long line. We were in within 10 minutes, and despite a confusing entry setup, found our way inside. First decision: go up the wide staircase? Nope, that leads to the gift shop and a dead end. So, following other bewildered visitors up, and down, we found the ropes leading around to the monastery's courtyard. And what a view; the intricately carved figures, ornately designed arches, reflection niches, composed views go on and on. The carvings on the arches and spires are so delicate that it's difficult to grasp. Go early to beat the tourist buses. Tour the monastery and then go upstairs where you may walk the upper floor, and proceed to the church mezzanine where you'll get a wonderful view of the expansive nave with its soaring pillars. It's quite a bit more impressive than the nearby Belém Tower, which can also get overrun with crowds as the day progresses. We spent a couple of peaceful hours enjoying the monastery and church before heading onwards to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the famed monument of the discoverers. read more

It was late in the afternoon and it was my very last tourist stop in Lisbon...Jerónimos Monastery is gargantuan! The sheer length of the building stretches out so long that its impossible to get a photograph without being in a helicopter. Unfortunately I arrived with just 20 minutes before closing. I got teasing peek inside one of the monastery's sanctuaries. The incredible Gothic interior filled with paintings, sculptures, alters, and tombs is an impressive as any other European church. We bought timed entrance tickets. They made a big deal on the website not to be late for the timed entry. We showed up, on time, to hundreds of people in line. The wait was 1.5 hours we were told. Surely we were not to wait in the long line since we got timed entry tickets? Incorrect! The security guard told us everyone waits! In no way were we going to wait 1.5 hours after being lead to believe we'd get in at the time on our ticket. I'll still give it 2 stars because it was impressive to walk around it, and there are a lot of restaurants nearby for lunch. So the lengthy and expensive Uber ride, not to mention the timed entry tickets, were not a 100% waste. But close. We would have planned something else had we known that our tickets were false advertising. A half day wasted on a precious vacation day is not something I want to do again. Jerónimos Monastery, be more clear about how entry works, so people don't waste their time if they don't want to wait in line. read more

The monastery is worth a visit while you are in Belem checking out the famous tower across the road. There are some magnificent designs inside, the courtyard has that 'Aaaaahhhhh, woooow!' sensation to it when you enter. Peaceful, reminds a bit of the courtyard in Cordoba Mezquita. There are different rooms to go into, you can imagine how the teachings took place and how the days where spent in those days. As always with landmarks of this time in the region, there is so much detailed design on pillars, walls and glass. The cloister has two stories. The decorated arches dominate the interior impression. Some parts function as exhibitions of writers/historians. I wish they would sell reduced tickets approaching closing time. I think 90 mins inside is sufficient to take it all in. We were chased out from one of the exhibition rooms well before closing time, which is not cool when you are paying. Costs 10 euro to go inside, given that there are other UNESCO heritages that are more famous charging the same, price is a bit steep. You can enter the Cathedral of Santa Maria Belem for free, it is more impressive than Se de Lisboa near Alfama. read more

I could write a book about this building, because there is so much to tell. Instead I will only describe it briefly, because I don't want to bore anyone. There is a lot of Portuguese history here. I will start with the architecture, which is in a style called Manueline. Named after King Manuel who paid for it with a tax on imports. The building includes a church that is more impressive than the the city cathedral. Entombed in the building is the remains of Portuguese's most famous explorer Vasco de Gama and the most famous Portuguese writer Luis de Camoes. What a magnificent monastery. The architecture and church are utterly beautiful and very different than most of the churches/monasteries I have ever visited. It's well worth the visit. Here is the tip to avoid the massive line getting into the monastery. There is another door to the left (about 50 yards) from the giant line. Go in there, buy your tickets and go back to the big line. Walk right up to where the group entry people are walking in and give your tickets to the entry guard up front. He will let you right in without waiting. (And yes, I asked the lady I bought my tickets if I had to wait in line and her response was "No wait.") read more

Another landmark in Lisbon, Portugal. As the other reviewers already mentioned, this place is beautiful and amazing. I believe this work of architecture was constructed over 500 years ago. If you are a history lover, then coming here is a must. Our time spent here was very short. Probably about an hour. Still enough time to admire this beauty and take plenty of photos. We did not have enough time to explore the whole property, but I believe we saw the best which was the church. UNESCO classifies Jeronimos Monastery as a World Heritage Monument, and it is also the final resting place of the explorer Vasco Da Gama. His tomb was placed inside by the entrance, and many other important individuals in Portuguese history are also entombed here. After visiting here, make certain to walk to Cafe Pasteis de Belem for some delicious Portuguese egg tarts! read more

Love this place. Just get there early since there will be a line. Even with the tourist card- you still have to wait in the long line. However if you get the combo ticket at Torre de Belem first-- you can jump this line. And this line WILL be longer. You get in and you will walk into the courtyard. The architecture is amazing. The history is also worth learning. I would budget at least an hour for this. Just to walk and marvel at everything. There are two levels to look at. Some side rooms to see and of course the church... all very nice. Some of the church was under construction... Also-- of you JUST want to see the church--- it's free. We took the tram to Belem on Sunday morning from the centre of town and it was packed from the first stop. This is a popular place at the weekend with both the locals and tourists! Entrance to the beautiful cloisters is free for a few hours on a Sunday, I think perhaps from 10am until 2pm, and on a lovely day in March we had to queue for 20 minutes to get inside but it was well worth the wait. Stunning architecture, a wonderful vibe and space to reflect make this a "must do" if you are visiting Lisboa. I would imagine this an amazing place to take in a concert. We popped into the church on our way out for a few moments of quiet meditation; I would advise you to do the same as you will not be disappointed..... enough to make even the most cynical non believer think for a moment. read more
