Really neat place with wonderful service and food. Never had fries with gravy but it works. Had a hamburger steak with fried onions on bread with gravy. Super filling and tasty. A nice place to stop with really nice folks.

Drove by here for years but never stopped. Finally did. Small busy place with staff that were happy and friendly. Never tried the steak they are famous for but did have the hamburger. It was a great burger. I will be back soon.

Had the strip loin steak. It was hard to cut in sections. Flavor was fine. The mushrooms tasted like a canned product. The baked potato was too plain. The server was not very friendly. You can tell the servers all have a pre-rehearsed script. They are too focused on this versus connecting with customers. The washrooms were not overly clean. Just a so so experience.

It was a Sunday night and the place was packed. The line went out to the street. The manager Pam was outstanding and extremely proficient. We were seated in a reasonably short period of time. The service was great and surprisingly friendly in spite of the busy night. The food was perfect. I had the ribs and was very pleased. The whole table was very satisfied. As a retired chef, been in the restaurant business a great deal of my adult life. These folks work hard to make your experience a very satisfactory one.

On the upside, we were there for a good stretch of happy hour! The space is cozy, with a pub-like feel from the bar counter you can sit at, as well as a stunning main bar with lovingly detailed, darkly-stained wood. Dark wainscoting rings the room, but the charm of its previous tenants fades away from there, with a generic tile floor and basic acoustic tile ceiling. We indulged in both the liquid and solid offerings on the happy hour menu, with the salt cod fritters ($9) a couple bucks under the regular menu price. Being in town to try things out and not just go for the cheapest items, we ordered from the whole menu, tacking on the beet salad and burrata toast. We decided we'd re-assess our appetites after those three apps. The beet salad ($10) was a colourful display of Nova Scotia's late harvest season, with beautiful, thin slices of purple, pink and golden beets. The kaleidoscope of root vegetables was topped with dots of whipped ricotta, blue cheese, popcorn and pea shoots. Delicate and lightly tart, with contrasting textures of the salty and smooth whipped ricotta and the airy crunch of the popcorn added dimensionality to the dish. Also, it's impossible to go wrong with pea shoots in my books! As my wife isn't a big seafood fan, I had most of the salt cod fritters to myself, and I wasn't complaining. An herby, crisp exterior encased a pleasantly doughy and lightly fishy interior, which was amped up by the fantastic sun-dried tomato and chili oil. The burrata toast ($14) didn't have a whole, massive blob of Italian cheesy goodness, but I should have guessed that would be the case given the price. A guy can dream, right? Crisp buttery focaccia held up well to its caprese-like toppings - roasted tomatoes, pesto and, of course, a slathering of creamy burrata. Bee pollen was noted on the menu and visible on the toast, but didn't register amongst the other flavours. After three very good starters, we decided that we had room for one main between the two of us, and landed on the ricotta gnocchi ($27). I was pleasantly surprised when the plate was put before us, and I saw that the fluffy bundles of carbs and cheese were pan fried, lending a light crispness and more flavour. Most gnocchi dishes aren't too meaty, but Townhouse had a decent portion of bresaola (dry-cured beef) and guanciale (cured pork cheek), letting the thinly-sliced, but big flavours, of the Italian cured meats punch above their weight. Pesto and pea shoots reappeared to bring some vegetal balance to the dish, and a salty hit of Pecorino-Romano rounded things out nicely. Not to be outdone by the savoury parts of the menu, Townhouse's desserts are far from an afterthought. The sticky toffee ($13) was wildly decadent, with the lightly spiced sponge cake begging to sop up the heavenly caramel cream sauce and French vanilla ice cream. Although they could stand to invest in their interior design, Townhouse's kitchen speaks for itself and the well-deserved accolades it has received. A definite 'must' when in Antigonish!

We thought it'll be an A-pk bar food but we were pleasantly surprised with the quality and the flavors in these dishes! We started with a creative scallops croquettes on a Fuccacia bread, so rich in amazing flavors! The wedge salad was fresh and had a good quality blue cheese on with excellent pieces of bacon. The chicken Karrage with lettuce wraps and couscous salmon were both devine! The Ambiance was great with candles everywhere and service was good too especially the place was completely fully booked. Highly recommend!

We ordered drinks: a Whiskey Sour for me (oops, meant to order an Old Fashioned), and a classic martini for her. The vodka was from a small Nova Scotia distillery and the whiskey, though not local, was at least Canadian. Both very good and generous with the alcohol. Later I had a good tempranillo (Spanish). The wine by the glass selection was ample, and available in 5 or 8 ounce sizes (I chose 8 obviously). Soon after this a runner arrived with two excellent breads: a cornbread and a multigrain. Free bread isn't always guaranteed these days; much appreciated. So good, and since we were traveling and running out we asked if they could sell a loaf, and they did - at a fair price. We shared two appetizers, both attractively plated on whimsically shaped dishes and garnished with edible flowers, one orange and the other yellow. The Mediterranean Pastry Tart with roasted tomatoes, caramelized onion, tapenade, mozzarella, goat cheese, prosciutto, arugula, and Parmesan. And the Grilled Saganaki (Halloumi cheese) with house-made lamb sausage and tomato basil salsa. Both memorable. On the small side but still enough for sharing by two. My Trio Of Lamb was a chop, boneless leg, and homemade sausage (the same as in our app), with mint-infused red wine peppercorn sauce. The chop and leg were served rather rare (she didn't ask and I didn't specify) but I was fine with it. Sauce, only subtly minty, was balanced in flavor and portion. Other components included roasted potato and cauliflower, a vegetable we couldn't identify at first, and another edible nasturtium, this time red. We eventually figured out that the green vegetable, resembling a julienned green bean, was probably a "micro celery". Curious but very interesting. The wife's entree was Roasted Chicken and Wild Mushroom Penne, with leeks, port, demi-glace, cream, and Parmigiana. The chicken was in small pieces and tender, the mushrooms not the usual button type, and the delicate complexity of the sauce made this into a memorable dish. Nasturtium garnish again; another orange - but how many colors can nasturtium come in? Our dessert was a chocolate cheesecake which we shared. Light, smooth, and chocolatey. Not huge but enough for us to share. Writing this several days later, I wish I remembered more. Other intriguing menu items include simpler things like burgers and fish&ships, a Seafood Vindaloo that I'd love to try, an entire sushi selection (!), and several to-go items sold frozen to be reheated at home. Stay in their rental upstairs (available on airbnb) and you could eat here everyday! Not a bad way to spend a few days.

Meeting a friend there, it came highly recommended on their part. It was nice to have the confirmation of a local, as the interwebs can't always be trusted (says the guy writing internet reviews...). We were luckily able to snag a spot on their bright and spacious enclosed patio! Both their breakfast and lunch menus were options when we arrived, and I was torn in multiple directions. I ended up landing on the fishcakes and salad ($18) instead of the heavier breakfast fishcakes iteration, as I was anticipating a hearty dinner and some greenery would be a bit lighter in the belly than eggs, homefries and toast. Three fishcakes were dotted with salmon, haddock and bright pops of green onion. They had a nice little crust from the griddle, and a chow brought its signature mix of acidity and sweetness to balance things out. The greens were fresh, and candied pecans, goat cheese and tart slices of Granny Smith apple added layers of flavour and texture. My wife's fried chicken sandwich ($19 + $2 sweet potato fries upgrade) was a towering mass of savoury delight. Two pieces of crispy, fried chicken was topped with creamy coleslaw, with some tartness showing up to the party care of the pickles. The SPF were good and crisp, and their chipotle mayo made for delicious dipping. Service was friendly, but needed some nudges on a busy Saturday afternoon. Big bonus points for the baked goods we took home! Ultra-chocolate-y brownies; massive, cheesy cheddar bagels; and a dee-lish-ous (bad spelling added for emphasis) cheddar and jalapeno bread. Justamere isn't just a big fish in a small pond, they're just killing it with both their hot and baked goods.

A return(s) to East Avenue was inevitable, and certainly looked forward to. It has to have one of the most beautiful restaurant interiors in northern Nova Scotia - exposed brick, soaring ceilings, and walls dotted with paintings by local artists. For our first visit of 2023, I had the Tamis anghang ($20). Filipino for "sweet and spicy", this is a slightly fancier, single-serving version of sweet and sour chicken. Replacing the cloyingly-sweet sauce at most Chinese-Canadian restaurants, East Ave's Thai chili sauce is much more balanced, with a light punch from the hot pepper that livens up your taste buds but won't scorch them. The chicken was cooked with a deft hand, and the crisp batter held up until the last bite. My wife's duck ragu gnocchi ($29) was a hearty meal, with an impressive amount of rich, shredded duck and fluffy sweet potato gnocchi. If that wasn't enough, shredded parm added even more umami. The sauce was a bit thin and served overly generously, which made the dish a bit soupy, but was otherwise quite delicious. Bonus points for this dish and many others having gluten-free options! They had an impressive crowd for a Tuesday evening and that plus a very large group that came in just after us seemed to make for somewhat uneven service. A return visit had us targeting their patio, sadly one of the few in the non-Pictou towns of Pictou County. Step it up people! We just wanted some mid-afternoon snacks, so we went for a couple appetizers. The fried sweet chili cauliflower ($15) was a tasty app. The mild crunch of the cauliflower gave further crunch to the crisp coating, which did wilt under the slathering of sauce. Said sauce did have a bit more bite than most sweet chili sauces out there, but it won't have you breathing fire. Our kale Caesar salad (side size, $10) was a bit on the healthier side than our deep fried app, and pleasant departure from the standard formula. The mix of kale and romaine paired the strengths of both greens, while chickpeas and tomatoes brought added couloir, flavour and texture. And don't worry, there was still bacon, shaved parm, and a hearty dose of dressing. East Avenue continues to put out generally great food in a killer atmosphere (both inside and out), and I love how much this new business has brought and added to the food scene in the area.

The menu has a lot of familiar food truck items, but it's a bit larger and a bit fancier. But not *too* fancy - this is Lower Barney's River, after all. There's several different burgers, chicken sandwiches, subs, deep-fried apps, and even some donairs! My wife's hunger lured her toward the first thing she saw on the menu - the bacon cheeseburger poutine - and I went for the Little Mess burger. There weas only a couple people ahead of us mid-afternoon on a Sunday, so we had our food in quick order and set up shop on one of their picnic tables. The Little Mess burger is the smaller version of their spin on a Big Mac, the Big Mess. Both have shredded lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and a house-made special sauce, except the Little Mess has just one 1/4lb patty instead of the Big Mess' two. All the familiar flavours worked well together, with the added benefit of much, much better beef than the burger's corporate inspiration. I didn't see much of a crust on this smashburger, but it was quite good nonetheless. Having gotten my burger a la carte, I had room for the inevitable portion of my wife's poutine that she wouldn't be able to finish. And to be fair, no one person should be crushing a hefty poutine on their own, especially sober. While Your Place's regular poutine has cheese curds (bonus points!), the bacon cheeseburger poutine leans into its theme, going with shredded cheddar and a cheese sauce for that extra hot 'n' cheesy mess factor. The bits of burger and bacon amped up the flavour and savouriness, and the fries that weren't completed doused in cheese seemed to be well cooked. Not even the crispest fry can withstand this onslaught of cheese! Given their location, Your Place could coast by doing the bare minimum, standard chip wagon food, so it's really cool that they're putting in the effort to offer the area more and they're doing a killer job at it!
