I cannot even convey how horrible this hospital is. My mom just died there. She shouldn't have. Covid has made it horrible because family members can't be there. Worst care. I gave them a list of all her meds. They conveniently didn't give her the meds she takes on a daily basis. I've lost 2 friends, my dad and now my mom due to the horrible "care" . The staff are professional and efficient while at the same time do have great bedside manners and show wonderful care. The receptionists, nurses and doctors are wonderful. I had great nurses Emily, Tom, Ben, Calah and Justin the x-ray tech. They're fantastic very kind and know how to treat a patient. My brother has been sick for the past month he has been going to the emergency room since he has been losing weight , non stop pain where he can't sleep at night. They give him pain killers and send him home. Then we are back again at the hospital And the doctor is sending him home with pain killers. I arrived on 1/31/22 just a day after being released by the hospital. I had to call the doctor and go over a sumo and he said to return the months ER. I arrived around 6:45pm and they got vitals, blood work, and a cat scan within an hour. It is now 1:45am and I have still not been taken back to see a Dr. The front counter staff continues to talk among themselves, complain about their job, and eat food. There seems to be no emergency for this ER. However, I will wait in case it is something serious for me. I hope after all this time they figured out why my ears are clogged and I have double vision. When I heard that my dad was being taken to ER at MT Carmel East, my first thought was OH NO! We need to take him somewhere else. But my concern was unfounded. My dad received excellent, expedient professional, knowledgeable and truly wonderful care at Mt Carmel East. The ER Sound Physician was very thorough in ordering tests and the results came back relatively quickly. I was so impressed with the streamline communication between the Sound Physicians, nurses and specialists. Mt Carmel correctly diagnosed my dads problem and accurately and caringly treated him. Each time I called for an update the nurses on staff had up to date information on his progress and treatment plan and were very receptive to my questions. This was not a one time unique situation. Two weeks later my mom ended up in Mt Carmel East ER due to a severe ankle fracture. And I found the care to be just as professional, urgent, and very caring toward my mom. From the anesthesiologist, the ortho surgeon, ER nurses, and especially Rachel (her Case Manager) my mom's care and the communication I received from the departments was nothing but EXCEPTIONAL! Thank You Mt Carmel East for taking such great care of my parents and getting them healthy again! And I so appreciate the seamless communication of the nurses, case managers (Rachel and Pete) and even Physicians calling me to keep me abreast of my parents health updates! read more

Not that you ever want to stay at a hospital but this place is awful! I had surgery where I needed to stay one night for observation... well I never saw my nurse unless I buzzed for her because it was time for my pain medication. It would take her over 1/2 hour to respond. I actually got up went out in the hall saw two nurses just sitting at the desk, they asked what I wanted and I said my nurse I have been waiting for awhile for my pain meds. They were rude and said she's aware and totally ignored me! All the while the light outside my door was blinking...My bed was broken my husband almost had to threaten an employee to get me a bed that was not broken. My nurse in recovery ignored me... the lady at registration was rude. The only good thing was the lady at registration for surgery and she was a volunteer and the busiest person there! A ray of sunshine in this dark hole of awfulness. Thankfully I had an awesome surgeon and his staff in the OR was great... but this place made an already stressful time even worse.. I would choose any other hospital and would go to an out of town hospital before this one. read more

Not a fan of how I was treated. But I would give 5 stars to Miss Penny who looked over me. I spent over 12 hrs in the er, with one glass of water. A nasty sandwich, that was not edible. Frosted Flakes and milk and apple sauce for breakfast. I asked for coffee in the morning, it took over an hour to get. I have a special diet, so by this time, I was shaking. Not a big fan. I did appreciate Miss Penny, the angel on the 7pm to 7am shift for being there. Without her, I would have had nothing to eat or no one to talk too. I will never go back to this hospital for anything. Thank you Miss Penny, brown and round, for caring about me. So what a joke. I call the number given. Does anyone answer? Nope. If you are a patient press this if you have an issue do that. Had two surgeries in seven days there. On Tuesday was told by physician and nurse I could go home if home health could gaurentee they would come to my home the next day for wound care. Both the nurse and I spoke with the office, and the supervisor, and was confirmed a nurse would be out to do care the next day. All I can say is thank God I'm a nurse and my hub is able to help a bit with the wound packing and dressing. I've been getting the runaround since getting home. Was told several different things that made no sense. Was told by home care person a nurse would be calling me this evening to set up time for tomorrow... Saturday. This was at around 2pm. By 8pm no call, so I called them. Was told 'I don't have access to the nurse schedule or their phone numbers. You'll have to wait til someone calls you in the morning ' This is told to someone with a gaping smelly draining wound I get belly. If I get no help tomorrow I will be filing a legal complaint!!! read more

If there was a way you could choose zero stars then that is what I would pick for the service I was provided by Mount Carmel East. I went to see a vascular specialist (Dr. Kapil) three times and ended up never meeting the MD on any of the 3 visits. They pushed me towards testing and procedures, under false pretenses, that they told me would be beneficial to the health of my legs, only to then say that there was nothing that could be done. I spoke to 5 different people after I was sent a large bill, each of them said they would help me. None did. I was told it was in processing. I assumed to be reevaluated. I didn't hear back and now I'm in collections. Remember - I didn't see the Doctor once! Dreadful care, dreadful customer service. Its too late for me - PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS HOSPITAL! read more

I had the unhappy experience of needing to go to the emergency room last Wednesday morning. when I went to register at the main desk the person doing the registrations let me know that there would be a long wait for service, she said that the person that had to wait the longest had waited 10 hours to be seen. since I was in such great pain I thought well Surely they would see me sooner. After all this was an emergency room. After being ignored for 2 hours, I decided to go to Riverside Hospital. I was given immediate attention and after a CT scan I was diagnosed with diverticulitis. If Mt Carmel can't properly staff an emergency room close it. There were only about 6 people waiting to be seen. I don't think they had anyone on staff seeing patients. read more

Unbelievably Awful! My father is ill and is a heart patient. He went to his family Dr. who immediately referred him to the ER. They took him for test, then brought him back to the waiting room to sit for SEVEN hours AND COUNTING!!!!! He is slumped in a wheelchair, cold, shaking, hungry and in pain. Results have been back for hours, but because there isn't an available bed in the ER, they refuse to have the Dr (who was called in specifically FOR HIM) even speak to my parents on the results. So not only is he feeling like crap, now he has to wonder why for NO reason. They weren't acknowledged on the wait, weren't even offered a bottle of water. My mom was admitted to ER on Wednesday. She was unresponsive because she overdosed on her psychosis medication. ER, intensive care unit provided get help and were absolutely great. Then she was transferred to 2E unit, not sure what it called and that is there problem started. She had partial memory loss, but neurologist sign off that she is fine, she had urinary tract infection, peeing in her panties, she had bad allergic reaction and nobody cared. They transferred her to Ohio Hospital for Psychiatry even though, I begged then not to send her there. It is a horrible place, there is an article in Columbus Dispatch from last May that referrals to that hospital got suspended. My mother is 70 years old. She had 3 suicide attempt and nobody wanted to help to send her to a good hospital to get decent help. read more

I had a procedure done way back in march in 2019. They constantly call and mail me letters tell me I owe them money and harass me. The letters are threatening in nature. I call them up and they say to call the collection agency. I call them and they tell you to call the hospital. Finally they admit they are all done in error and there is no balance. Never go here unless you want to die or have days ruined trying to deal with these people. I filed a complaint with the attorney general. If that doesn't get them to act right I might have to hire an attorney to deal with this harassment! read more

While I respect anyone who makes the decision to work in the medical industry, I've never gone to Mt. Carmel East and felt like I had a good experience. The staff is frequently indifferent or rude, and rarely acts like they care about you at all. The facilities aren't in the best shape, and they don't communicate with you (or your other doctors) very well. I've had a number of billing problems between their offices and my insurance, and they're often difficult to get a hold of when you need to talk to someone, either on the medical or administrative sides of the house. The cherry on top was a few nights ago - my wife was ill and started having major problems breathing. We made the decision to head to Mt. Carmel East because they were the closest emergency room on a late Saturday night. When we arrived, my wife's breathing was even worse, and she had become too dizzy to walk without help. The staff at the ER entrance made her walk to reception before they'd let her sit down or use a wheelchair, and after performing a 30 second 'triage', told her that they were too backed up to look at her any time soon. When I asked them what that meant, I was told they wouldn't be able to get her back into an exam room, let alone to see anyone, for at least three hours. That wasn't acceptable. We made the decision to risk leaving and drove to a NON-Mt. Carmel ER, and she was seen and getting treatment within 5 minutes of arriving. If you gave me a choice of shooting me in the chest and dropping me at a random part of the Short North or at the doorstep of Mt. Carmel, I'd probably choose the Short North. I feel like I'd have a better chance of actually getting treated properly. read more

I'm not too sure how much I should "like" a hospital. I mean, it's where the sick/hurt go. Sometimes it's a fix. Well, you know the rest. I've been here a couple of times over the last couple of years: mostly, do to my father's intestines getting jumbled up, so he comes and checks in so they can get em to relax. I have found, for any doctor I've had, or family has dealt with, it's all about the patient's attitude. If you're polite, and treat the nurses and doctors with respect/as an equal, then most times the visit/stay is bearable! This hospital seems to be clean and orderly. Staff try's to help when possible. Sometimes there's a wait, but, hey, you're entering the world of unknowns. Decent sized rooms. And the staff is pretty prompt getting the papers signed so you can head home to normalcy again. Is this my most favorite hospital? No. Does it get the job done? Yes. These people work hard. And, I must commend them for the good work I've witnessed. read more

It's hard to be a fan of a hospital. I've been here myself for ER and clinical. Most recently it has been for family and friends. The parking lot has forever been unfriendly, and unwelcoming. Currently they are building a new parking structure similar to ones on the back side of the building. Ehh, construction. The ER is standard. Lots of people sitting in a waiting room griping about why someone got to go ahead of them. Coughing and germs galore. A petrie dish with chairs. The ER rooms are all private with curtains. Lots of them. It's easy as a visitor to forget your way, if you're back in there to deep. Drop off, pick up parking has gotten better by the front main entrance. Gift shop in the main lobby, with an elevator bank to the rear. The current visitations have taken me to floor #2 where most of the rooms are still shared. Can you say roommate roulette? Asking to be moved out, away from a screamer can leave you at risk for what you get. Also your guests are always trying to find you. Staff is warm and friendly, just a little slower on the call button than you would want. You're not Bruce Wayne, and Alfred is not standing just outside the door waiting for your beckoning. Get over it. More like they are down the hall with another aid, trying to handle another problem, that you wish you never heard about. The thankless career of nursing. Want to be a good guest. Take snacks, or goodies for the staff. Tell them how much you appreciate how they take care of your loved ones. Try to look past the minor imperfections, and complete your stay. The food is just as you imagine...Hospital food. Communication between the doctor, dietary, kitchen, and staff falls short. Hear your doctor, and follow their recommendations. Don't eat the wrong food because that's what they brought. They'll fix it, IF you speak up. Theres a lot of meals, and mistakes happen. For guests, eat before or after your visit. Leave the cafeteria to the staff. There's nothing there that a Columbus foodie is raving about. Save yourself the anguish. Hand sanitizer is everywhere. Use it. Use it. Use it. read more

Its not in great shape and the last time I had to go there because I was in too much pain to drive myself to St. Ann's I saw bed bugs on the furniture. The staff there is incredibly rude and don't seem to give a crappy about the patients at all. Also, I don't know if they even scan your medical card because the few times I've gone there I've gotten huge bills a few months later. And that's never happened at any other hospital I've gone too. Had to go to the ER because my back locked up days after an ablation procedure on my L3, L4, L5. My specialty recommended I go because the solutions weren't typical of complications of the procedure. I could barely walk and an EMT got me a wheel chair and they took me back straight away. The staff were great and took time to take my history on this particular issue and do what they could to get things to calm down before taking x-rays. The initial nurse had attached the blood pressure band wrong and as it inflated it pinched my skin and bruised my arm; even after I pointed out several times it didn't feel right and it was causing abnormal pain she ignored me. Other than that my experience was a long one but normal for an busy ER. read more

On February 8th Betty Fisher was taken to the ER to be checked in after collapsing in her home. Eight hours later she finally was transported into a room where the tests and treatment began. She was in a weakened state and have come to find out had internal infection. She recently has had back surgery by another hospital and she has been mostly bed ridden with limited bowel movements for the last three weeks until she collapsed on February 8th. Surgery was recommenced by Mt. Carmel and we agreed and they discovered issues with her colon which they removed a portion. She was non responsive for a day then started showing positive signs on Feb 9th. She was on a breathing machine and many pain meds and antibiotics along with medicine to stabilize her blood pressure, not in very good shape. The afternoon of Feb 9th she seemed to be doing better. Not totally conscience but would respond to move your feet and hands requests. She took a turn for the worse in the early morning of Feb 10th, 2am, and the doctor called Noel Fisher and had him approve another surgery and asked for him to come to the hospital. Betty's heart gave out during or right after that surgery and she passed away. In addition to losing a wife, mother and grandmother, the hospital has misplaced her 56 year old wedding ring. We have been calling and checking into this for weeks now with very little communication and no luck. The ring was taken off for the first time in 30 years, for some unknown reason. She has had many surgery's and it has never been removed prior. The ring is on a hospital check list that we have been told about but have never seen. Our family was never told about the ring being removed. The ER staff placed a bag with her nightgown and undergarments by the chair where our father sat in the ER check in room. No notification of the bag was his or placement of it. He found it after she was taken to her room. The ring was not in the bag. The hospital staff has admitted to mishandling this situation though no apology or anything has been done to help the situation. A 56 year old wedding ring. Think about that. How would you feel? Loosing a loved one and being thrown into a black hole of non-response about it. We are not going to just let this go and would appreciate some action and communication from Mt. Worst service ever. Came in with my mom who had symptoms that her doctor advised needed to be seen in ER. Initially she was seen and received brief assessments. They said they were going to order some tests Then they abandoned her in the waiting area for 4 and 1/2 hours. Others were waiting that long. The staff were not even providing any information. Asked the nurses for updates and they were sitting at the desk. I had to call her doctor's after hours line to help find out if there was any updates After 5 hours they finally started doing the tests. 7 hours later they have still not provided any results, information or diagnosis. Paramedics picked me up after a fainting spell. I didn't want to go, but I needed to. I was treated with nothing but respect and courtesy. I got a good diagnosis from the doctors. They made me stay all night in the cardiac wing. Nursing staff was great. The only thing I can complain about is the food. It's awful! Grilled chicken was definitely steamed, of course no salt. The vegetables were cooked to death and basic requests for tea w/lemon, and syrup with my French toast were not delivered. Most of what I was given to eat was thrown away. read more

I was at Mt Carmel West once and have to say that East is the best hospital I have ever had to stay in. On 1/21/23 at approximately 10:45 pm I was admitted into Mt Carmel East's ER. I was having a bad reaction to the medication I was taking. I was told by my on-call doctor to go to the nearest ER. That ER was Mount Carmel East. While I was checked in and given an ER bed (bed 2 directly behind the nurses' station) fairly quickly we did not see the ER doctor for many hours after I arrived. The nurse assigned to me did not introduce herself nor did she ever explain why she was doing what she was doing. My blood was taken. Around an hour later it was taken once more... again without explanation until questioned by my boyfriend. About an hour later another nurse came in and told me she was going to take my blood pressure 3 separate times. When I asked her why and where the doctor was, she said she didn't know, that he had just asked her to do it. She didn't know where he was nor when he would be coming to see me. She left. Another hour passes and the doctor finally arrives. He spends less than 5 minutes with me and mentions he may order an ultrasound and will do a physical exam. I won't go into the gory details, but let's just say based on the horrible direction of the nurse and the absentee doctor, I am left in a deplorable condition. Hours pass and the nurse comes in to let me know my tests are all in and we're just waiting for the doctor to find a few minutes to talk to me, he keeps getting pulled into other things. Not sure how much more time passes but he arrives, says the tests look good except the ultrasound wasn't done well enough on the right side to see so he'll do the physical exam to make sure all is well. He does not return. Around the 7 hour mark I am beyond done and want to see the doctor and leave. It is somewhere around 6 am on 1/22/23 at this point. I explain to the nurse and the doctor I know I am not in critical condition but I am also a person and should be treated with some consideration rather than left to sit in the middle of a room in this condition ignored for several hours. The new nurse on the new shift assures me he will make sure the doctor returns in "10 minutes" (because, of course, the doctor left again without doing the physical exam to deal with a more critical patient). In less than 30 minutes the doctor comes back and performs the exam. He says all seems well and is discharging me with instructions. The nurse completes the discharge and we leave at approximately 7 am. Throughout this entire experience, I can hear multiple nurses talking at the nurses' station about personal things and other patients. There were a few times when I used the Nurse button to ask questions ("I have to use the restroom, can someone bring the urine sample cup,?" "I'm sitting here in [an awful condition] waiting for the doctor, do you know when he's coming?") and every time I used the button to reach the nurses, the nurses took at least 5 to 10 minutes to respond and never in person only through the intercom (their responses most times were "I don't know", "I'm not sure"...). Even though Mt Carmel East is close to my home I WILL NEVER EVER GO THERE AGAIN for any medical attention. I would rather drive 3 times further away, putting my own health at risk, than go to this ER again. This ER experience turned out to be more difficult and more taxing than the medical issue I was there to have addressed. I feel sorry for any future patients who are unlucky enough to have to be seen at this ER. read more

I will not go here to the ER - you wait forever and I had to go in once for psych and was treated like a damned criminal. They wouldn't even let me use their phone to call my family and let them know I was there. With that said, my mom has gone through the er without any trouble and inpatient you really can't ask for much more - I recently was there with my aunt who passed and the staff was great - kudo's to Trey and Katie on the second floor and the gentleman who talked with us after the death about what to do now - couldn't have been nicer. I was sent to Mount Carmel East ER by my on call physician and I have to admit, I was pretty leery to use this ER, especially on Halloween night, but I was fairly impressed! It was definitely a busy night but the staff were nice and I was seen pretty quickly. From arrival to departure we were there for about 4 hours - 9pm to 1am - and I had several medical tests. Everyone was very professional and the rooms were clean. I saw two physicians assistants and they had great bedside manner and took the time to answer all of my questions. Some of the restrooms were not very clean, so that's the reason for 4 stars, but I have to give them a break for it being a busy night. read more

Dr. Vara and his surgical team were amazing. I had a complete thyroidectomy which required an overnight stay . The nurses and PCA's on 3 north were amazing. I have never had such compassionate care from an obviously busy staff. With it being flu season the floor was full, but I never felt rushed when getting care and anything I needed was taken care of quickly. read more

The females that work at this place carry themselves like they are on their period 24/7 attitudes for no reason. They do not sanitize anything i rarely see them with gloves it's gross the rooms they put you in if you don't have covid you probably will when you leave two rooms and i have pics were filthy they moved me twice. We understand your tired from working but that's the job YOU choose. Then on top of that covid within the nurses is going around like wild fire but they don't care cause they claim to be vaccinated but thirteen people that were in we were vaccinated twice with boosters and still had covid. Oh and make sure you check your meds and in google because they are prescribing wrong medications with foreheads to allergies and if you don't die from contracting something in the ear they will probably kill you with the medicine they swear you have to take WORST HOSPITAL IN THE MIDWEST read more

When I needed an emergency room to go to, MCE was the closest ER/hospital to me. After reading some online reviews, I became very nervous about going though. It's proximity to me was the sole reason I reluctantly went, figuring I'd just have to tough it out. Turns out, I couldn't have been more pleased with the streamlined service, quality of care, staff friendliness, and general experience. Given my time there was during the COVID-19 ordeal, I thought it'd be hours before I got seen, but I only waited about 15 min before I was sent to a room where I was then immediately treated, given my prescriptions and discharged, all in about an hour and a half at a maximum. And all those functions were carried out by the nicest team of medical professionals. I thank you for the care, concern and comfort I received from all I encountered there today, it truly made the experience very pleasant when it so could have not been. Horrible experience. My mother was treated for a stroke here. ZERO communication. The runaround you experience here is extremely frustrating. The doctor, Dr Fahrig, was impossible to locate. I could not get any MRI results. Never saw him once in the entire eight day stay. Demanded a meeting with the head nurse for some answers. She was able to track him down on the phone to speak with me. Even then he was shuffling papers and struggling to give any details. I was repeatedly told there was no phone number to contact me even though I had given it multiple times and it was on the dry erase board in my mother's room. Odd because I was the one they called to ask the pre-MRI questions. Beth M, case worker, will not return your calls. Upon transfer to rehab, Mt Carmel lost my mother's dentures and a "Stevens" in security hung up on me after I had been transferred everywhere in the hospital trying to find them. Dear Sir or Mam I was there a week ago today. I spent more then 24 hours in the ER on a bed that would have keep a dead man up. The things i seen their was just down disgusting. I seen housekeeping sweeping the floor and leave the trash on it, seen a woman with a hole in her head that should have been a room, seen a lot of people in the hallway that should have been some where else. Most of your staff a very sweet and very professional. and then you have Doctor's who are with Sound that never come and see you but prescribed medicine that the Patient dont need this happen two time's too me I wonder how many more times this happens . If this ever happens again to me I will stay away from your Hospital with the kind of things that your Doctor's are doing they are going to hurt someone or even make them dead i hope some day you will get it together.
