Here's why: It's easy to get to, but the walk is wonderful. At just over 7kms from the road, Tombstone campground gets you significantly away from society. You're far enough away to experience a mountain range with a scenic valley and not another human in sight. Once you're up the first hill, the walk is very flat. It's rugged and off road enough to be interesting, but it spends it's time meandering through the valley, offering you lush fields with ample views and spectacular mountainscapes. There's a few short day hikes from the campground. At only 7.5-ish kms, you could start in the morning and arrive at the campsite for lunch. From here, you could set up camp, have lunch and easily embark on one of the 8km-ish day hikes within the area to return to your already set up camp in the evening, looking forward to the food and campfire that awaits. This is an excellent idea. Just be cause you hauled all your food and accommodations way out into the wilderness, doesn't mean your daylight and energy is best spent lugging that stuff around. After ditching out stuff, we decided to make the easy trek up to the tombstone lakes, which involved some relaxing, a bit of skree scrambling and some Pika viewing. Bring your rod and reel if you're heading to Tombstone. Just sitting by the waters edge we saw many trout swim by. Some fresh fish for dinner would really up the camping experience. As far as backcountry campgrounds go, this one is full featured with each site having its own firepit and picnic table. There are no tent pads, but leave it up to you to choose the best location for your tent, from sheltered and tree'd in, to out in the open. We put our faith in our shelter and despite the thunderstorm warnings chose a spot overlooking the ridge. Thankfully the weather let up so being exposed to the sunshine was a good thing. Tombstone makes for a wonderful overnight adventure in the backcountry without having to haul your gear the whole way. The mostly flat and downhill 7km exit for for an easy exit too.

The resort is very mountainous looking resort on the outside, in fact very inviting. This location is on the outskirts of the busy Canmore Town. With hiking trails to town or by the river. The staff very friendly and accommodating upon checkin. There is 2 levels of underground parking for guests. Upon arriving to our suite as we entered it was like entering a apartment full kitchen with counter seating for 4 and huge table, 2 bedrooms, 2 huge bathrooms, washer and dryer, living room with fireplace, a balcony with BBQ. Looking over the courtyard and pool. Considering how full this resort was with guests, it's very quiet inside the unit. There is a cafe connected to the resort called Black Dog Cafe. Note: stay away it's very over priced below par food with very slow service. Better off going to Tim Hortons down the road for half the price and fresh hot breakfast. There is a cute Deli called Bohemian smoked meat Czech Deli across the street highly recommend! Freshly made sandwiches and soups. In the Garden centre of all places is a Tea house with gourmet Japanese breakfast or Lunch made fresh everyday called Wagashi. This resort is very well situated amongst the mountains and away from town. Will be back in the future had a fantastic stay.

Our family of 5 from California...3 from Los Angeles and 2 from around San Luis Obispo...chose the Canadian Rockies to get together for a week to celebrate a couple of milestone birthdays and a 25th anniversary. We chose Canmore since it was less expensive than Banff and a VRBO in Stoneridge because it seemed a nice place at a reasonable price. We were wrong. Pros: - Stoneridge looks nice from the outside - Our 3 bedroom unit had enough space for 5 family members - We had an end unit, #303, so the views and balcony facing the mountains were very nice - Our walls were white and furnishings somewhat modern - The pool and jacuzzi were fine - Communications with Rockies Rentals, the management firm of our unit, both before and during our week were very good. They promptly responded to most requests....especially Athira - A small restaurant, the Black Dog Cafe, is next to Stoneridge. They make great drinks, serve fine pastries...and really do have a friendly big black dog. Cons: - Stoneridge might look okay from the street, but it's just a 4 story apartment building from the 1980s - We had enough space, but the atmosphere was like my first place in the 1970s with lots of cheap brown wood, hollow doors and "well used" appliances - The hallway outside our unit, #303, reminded us of the movie "The Shining" where a little boy rode his tricycle and repeated the word "redrum". They're long, dark and drab...especially during the day. - Upon arrival on a Saturday, many things were wrong: - The dishwasher was broken - The vacuum cleaner was broken - There were no tissues - The broom was very full of dust - We had 2 soggy bathrobes hanging in the main bedroom closet - Carpets were dirty and, last but not least..... - Lots of black mold in the shower of the main bathroom (the pictures don't do it justice) So what happened with each item? The management company, Rockies Rentals, said: - Dishwasher: "We'll try to get someone quickly". It was Labor Day weekend so not much happened until Tuesday when they said "sorry. Still trying". Meanwhile, we washed everything and put them on racks in the washer to dry. By Thursday, they offered to come by and wash dishes for us daily. Since Friday was our last full day, I said "no thanks". - Vacuum: They replaced it the next day - Tissues: They brought a box for each of the 2 bathrooms - Broom: We just didn't use it - Bathrobes: "They're clean. It's policy to let them hang dry". They brought 2 dry ones the next day. - Carpets: I don't know.....but we used the replacement vacuum to do it ourselves - Black mold: We never heard back.....so I sprayed the shower THOROUGHLY and DAILY with Clorox stocked in the unit (see photo) A few other notes: - The washer and dryer were small. About the size of a refrigerator in a college dorm room - Kitchen appliances worked, but showed lots of wear and tear - There's no garbage disposal in the kitchen - The only bins big enough for bags of regular garbage are dumpsters behind big doors on the 1st floor of parking - Parking is on 2 levels under the 4 floors of units. There are many spaces, but it's dark and tight. Prepare to be a nimble parker and bring a flashlight. For our 3 bedroom unit (one with bunk beds), we paid $6,632 for 7 nights or $947 per night. Take what you want from this experience. Good thing I'm not an attorney.

The suites themselves were clean, cozy, and equipped with the typical amenities you would expect from a timeshare. Each unit had a working mini kitchen with a microwave and stove/oven, along with appliances such as a toaster and coffeemaker. Utensils, kitchenware, and bakeware were all provided, which made it easy to prepare meals. The layout worked well for our group -- each suite had one king-sized bed, one queen-sized bed, and a queen-sized sleeper sofa. Everything was functional and comfortable. The best part of our stay was definitely the amenities. We loved having both an indoor and outdoor hot tub. The outdoor hot tub was very popular in the evenings and was usually busy when we wanted to use it, but fortunately the indoor hot tub was available and just as enjoyable. A great surprise was the dry sauna located near the indoor hot tub. We took advantage of both daily after long days exploring Banff -- especially appreciated since temperatures during our stay ranged from -13°F to 11°F. The pool is mostly outdoors with a small indoor section that connects to it. It is slightly heated, but not very warm. Given the extremely cold February weather, it would have been much more enjoyable if the water temperature had been warmer. The location is convenient, especially being close to the Canmore area. However, the property overall feels dated and could use general updating. The hallways are quite dim and would benefit from improved lighting. There were also some frustrations with the check-in process and communication that affected our first impression. Overall, while there are areas that could be improved, we really made the most of the hot tubs and sauna -- those amenities were definitely the highlight of our winter stay.

Words…read morecannot express what a nice time we had staying here from the welcome we received by Lonnie and his staff, the beautifully designed and kept grounds, the delicious breakfast delivered outside your door every morning, and proximity to explore what the area in and around Canmore has to offer. Whether its soaking in the hot tub in your room, sitting on your balcony with mountain views or relaxing in the common areas this place has what you need to relax after a long day of hiking. We thought the bed and pillows were comfortable, although the mattress was more firm than what I prefer. Our room was serviced everyday by non-intrusive and very friendly staff. There are small bags of ice and refreshments on hand with the honor system in place when it comes to checking out, which we thought was nice. Thankfully there is a small air conditioner and ceiling fan in the room because it did get hot the days we were there. You can tell a lot of love has gone into building this place and making it into such a gem. I would definitely come back and highly recommend for anyone wanting to stay near Banff or in Canmore! All I can say after reading a couple of the other reviews is "REALLY?"…read more.. I've found the staff that run ANY Kananaskis campground to try unbelievably hard to make your stay pleasant. They clean up the site after the previous renter leaves, and they try to keep a lid on noisy sites while still letting people have fun. The Conservation Officers are there for some very real reasons. If you get a visit from them, they are doing the rest of us a favor by encouraging your behavior to change, so that they don't have to deal with the consequences of a bear becoming aggressive. As much as I would prefer to be alone when I'm out there, I don't think these reviews are fair. After all, outhouses are what they are, and plowing in a bunch of plumbing means the overall quality of the experience goes down, since the sites generally get closer, and the trees in between sites disappear. Lots of golf course style sites in other parks, if you want a flushing biffy and cell phone service, try Tunnel Mountain in Banff. They've almost paved the whole park by now, so you might feel more at home. If you have a family and are looking to reserve a site in a good location, close to lots of things to do, in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, and you want your vacation to go smoothly, I would strongly recommend you try this Campground. Yes, there are Bears, Bugs, and Outhouses. Sometimes Whisky Jacks, Hoary Marmots, Fishers, Coyotes, Wolves, some of the largest Bull Trout in Western Canada, and Great Horned Owls. They live there. ( seriously, 2 cans of beer in a cooler and some empties) Did a little research after i got home, apparently staffs normally leave a note or knock on your door if you are leaving anything out and they will call the officer if you don't clean up. But we had no warnings at all!!!!!!! only one sign before you enter the campground. on top of that, NO CELL PHONE RECEPTION 40 MINS DRIVE IF YOU NEED IT. LOVELY. I DON'T THINK THEY TELL YOU THAT WHEN U BOOK IT EITHER Never going back there again !!!!!
