Also known as Bald Peak (and lending it's name to the nearby Bald Peak Colony Club) this little…read moremountain is a decent size to get in a half-day hike, depending on your ability, a picnic lunch, and some incredible views. It's a popular trek. There are also several hiking paths nearby which are maintained by the Castle Preservation Society, as well as Castle in the Clouds itself, and hiking trails at Mt. Shaw (I believe) nearby. I recommend sticking to the path along the eastern side (right-hand side as you approach the base) of the mountain. There are several very interesting places to explore just off the path, however they can get steep. The path travels up around the back of the rocky area. As you approach the outcropping, you will have an impressive view of Lake Winnipesaukee. When I was last there, there was a picnic table and camp fire as well. There are horse trails from the summit that travel west to Castle in the Clouds, but it's a long haul to get over there! (These trails are free and open to the public, but the Castle charges admission.) I believe I read that there are some geocaching spots up there as well. Parking is along the road right at the Tuftonboro/Moultonboro border by the town sign honoring local Olympians Hannah Hardaway and Wolfgang Moser.

The trail is very well marked, with trail markers every twenty feet or so. The walk is mostly wooded, so just take some time and enjoy the rustling of the trees. This would be a good trail to bring your dog on. Parking lot probably fits 10 to 15 cars. There were no bathrooms on site.

Just the drive to find the entrance to Bauneg Beg (which we did from Fox Farm Hill Rd) was stunning - sweeping views of wide open fields and meadows. Lovely. If you're coming to the mountain this way, there's a inconspicuous brown wooden plank sign before the small off-street gravel parking lot (we blew past it initially, and probably would again if we came bag so just go slow!). This conservation area is comprised of close to 90 acres of logging trails (a two mile network) through thick woodlands and rock formations, one such called Devil's Den made up of impressive and daunting looking boulders - hiking up the relatively steep rocky "path" constructed through here, though, brings you directly to the top of Middle Peak. Apparently Banueg Beg has three distinct peaks which can actually be seen from the ocean (and in the past they were used to help navigation to ME's coast, kinda cool right?). Unfortunately, the views from the top (apparently you can see Mt Washington and the Atlantic on a clear day) where we specifically were didn't quite offer what we were expecting as much of it is obstructed by the overgrowth of trees and vegetation. A bit of a bummer, but still worth the work-out! Instead of backtracking, we went down the mountain via the more accessible, gentle, all-levels trail through a pine grove (Ginny's Way). Bauneg Beg was just such an unexpected, beautiful network of trails through such a thick, tall deciduous forest that we were impressed. The signage on the paths themselves could be improved (some trees have multiple boards with arrows pointing in literally every direction making it VERY confusing; guess that's part of the adventure, though!), but this particular spot just had that untouched-by-man, trekking-through-the-raw-beauty-of-Maine-without-a-single-person-knowing-where-I-am-and-can't-bother-me-via-text feeling really reconnects a gal to nature and makes her want to create or write something beautiful, y'know?

About 50 minutes in total. At the top is a lookout tower that I think is used by the local fire department. Climb to the top for a cool view of the mountains. There seems to be a trail off the backside leading to another trailhead but I could not find it. ATVs and snowmobiles would love this trail.

Oh my, there is a beautiful view around every corner. I was only here one night but had so much…read morefun. I stayed at a campground in Alton Bay. It is nice to have the best aunt in the world there. We sat on the porch looking out at the lake and told stories. We laughed and laughed. In the evening, we went to pop's for fish and chips. I ate the whole thing! It was so good. Then we went for a walk around the campground. The houses are really cute. We went to Wolfeboro in the morning. We had coffee and donuts at a cute bakery. They sat out on the dock watching the boats go by. I tucked in a few stores but I wasn't looking for anything. I hope to come back in August and explore some more. There is so much to do up here. The popular activities are boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

Attended a friends wedding here yesterday. What a beautiful location for a wedding! Only problem…read morewas the rude staff members. How many coordinators does a wedding need? 4? 6? Well, that's how many they had. There were SO many "coordinators" involved that they just made things confusing and rushed. Too many cooks in the kitchen. I witenssed guests constantly scolded for things ALL day. Don't park here, don't stand here. Can't take a photo of that, etc, etc, etc. Got rushed through taking bridal & family photos just to wait around for 45 minutes for the reception to start. I know it's a historical location but if you want to have weddings here you should get people who are nice and actually know what they're doing.
