Gorgeous, hidden, great scenic overview. Ample parking, seconds off RT36. Worth a detour!

While it is not a destination, it is surely worth a stop when in the area. For some it has far greater significance than it does for others. Located right off of highway Route 36 and about a mile from the Historic Twin Lighthouse, Mount Mitchell affords fantastic views of the bay, Atlantic Ocean, Manhattan, Freedom Tower, Verrazano Bridge, Statin Island and Brooklyn. Bring your binoculars or use the coin operated viewing machines. The best photo opportunities require a 500+ mm lens. It's a small park with manicured grounds, paving and a small but nice playground with apparatus to keep the kids entertained. There is a well done 9/11 memorial to those who lost their lives in the twin towers that day. The memorial includes the various towns and the names and ages of those who died that day. There is a time line on the pavers which indicates when the first tower was hit, the second tower, the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pa. .Information plaques can be read concerning the area and Mt. Mitchill. It's only 500 feet off of Route 36 and well worth the 15 minute stop. Locals consider it a romantic spot. read more

Mount Mitchill is a small but beautiful little gem of a park. What the park lacks in size it makes up for in stunning views of Sandy Hook and even NYC. There is also a beautiful 9/11 tribute here. There is plenty of free parking here. Make sure to read the signs along the paths. read more

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS: this area, along with the Highlands, keeps rockin' with really great dog friendly activities. Part of the Monmouth County Park System, Mount Mitchell Scenic Overlook is the highest elevation point between southern Maine to the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. That's pretty incredible and offers stunning views of Sandy Hook, the Atlantic ocean, and NYC skyline and surrounding NY cities. It is such a special spot and also includes a beautiful 9/11 memorial. What can you say about this place? I found this place by accident in the late 90s. It was just a cool spot to eat lunch and look at the NY City skyline. It has become so much more. Mount Mitchell is the location of Monmouth County's 9/11 Memorial. Whoever designed this nailed it. The walkway is a timeline, the statue base is a pentagon, the names of those residents lost are engraved in the side. It is stunning. There is also a small memorial at the base of the flagpole for those lost in the hostage crisis during the Carter administration. It's not all somber reflection. You can see the NY skyline, the Statue of Liberty, Sandy Hook. It's a beautiful spot. There is even a playground off to the side to let the little ones burn off some energy. If you're in the area, stop by. You'll never forget it. read more

LOVE is an understatement for this. I had no idea this overlook existed until on a whim I was looking for an adventure. I will say on a clear day you would have 100% better view but I was still able to see the NYC skyline! The views are endless and so peaceful and serene. It's a quick drive from Red Bank, NJ and located in Central New Jersey! I am hoping to go back when it's warmer out. read more

On our way back from Sandy Hook we stopped here so we could see the Hook from the other side. Clear day beautiful view of NYC skyline. Very nice area to sit, relax and admire the view. Several benches. They have coin operated viewers to use if you don't have your own binoculars. There is a 911 memorial. read more

I was in the area visiting the Twin Lights Historic Site and found this attraction nearby. I figure it was only a few minutes away so I decided to give it a go. The landscaping was beautiful. Excellent views from way high up. The 9/11 memorial is beautiful though. I spent about 10-15 minutes there and thats about it. Don't make this a destination, I would recommend it only if you are in the area. read more

Mt. Mitchill Park is one of the the highest points along the New Jersey Shore. It looks across the bay into Staten Island, Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. It is a million dollar view for sure. A new feature of the park is a 9-11 memorial that contains the names of all the Monmouth County residents that lost there lives on 9/11/2007. They are all listed by towns. It is a very moving experience to walk around the base and read the names. Mt. Mitchill Scenic Overlook is a small park and will not hold your interest for more than an hour but you will be glad you stopped by. read more

Mt Michill is the this random overlook that people really do overlook! A great little park setting. Stunning, breathtaking, so close yet so far view of NY City.. Atlantic Highlands is where Henry Hudson stopped for fresh water before landing on Manhattan Island! A great place to catch a glimpse the skyline, the Sandy Hook Bay and the Atlantic. Debated highest point on the eastern coastline.... The battle is with the closed SI dump.... Close to my heart because the of day of 9/11/01, I came here after fleeing the city to see if what happened really happened... Never forget. read more

This is a fantastic little park, and a gem for the area. Absolutely stunning view. Well kept grass, well kept benches. It's petite but perfect. And it's great to just go and look at the geography of the Sandy Hook area from a birds eye view. On a clear day you can literally see Manhattan, Brooklyn, Coney Island, and Rockaway, even the control tower of JFK airport! Most importantly, I'd say it gets my vote for most romantic area in all of Monmouth County, right next to the Twin Lights. :) read more

Mount Mitchell is a phenomenal place. When visiting Mount Mitchell, you'll be at the highest point on the Atlantic seaboard. The views of NYC are absolutely spectacular. You can see the entire skyline and it doesn't even look too far away. You also get some great views of Sandy Hook, as well. There is even a nice little playground area for the kids. The 9-11 memorial is absolutely moving. There are no words to describe it and there is no way that my review could do it any justice. Please see it. I'd recommend taking a trip down to the Atlantic Highlands area and visiting Mount Mitchell. It's not something you can make a full day trip out of but definitely something well worth visiting, seeing and taking in the sights. read more

Very beautiful small lookout point - extremely well kept and clean, safe, ample parking. Incredible view of the NYC skyline, truly amazing view - must see it when their is a clear horizon or during sunset. Very well manicured grounds with lovely floral arrangements and a nice little park for your little ones to play in. Would definitely recommend to go, especially with your loved ones. the view of NYC is great, don't miss it! check it out both in the day and just before they close at 8 pm so that you can see the city lights.. (i assume the cops or someone will come after 8 pm and tell you to leave, haven't tested that yet, as the fantastic view could make this a good "romantic" spot..) there are a couple trees so the view will change depending on the time of year and the clarity of the day of course, but you can very clearly see Verrazano Narrows Bridge, the major Manhattan buildings , Coney Island, the control tower at JFK, etc.. highest point on the Atlantic Coast between southern Maine and Yucatan, Mexico.. read more

It's beautiful, although small. The view is amazing and the grounds are spectacular to walk through. There's a 9/11 tribute too.
