There was an incident in the neighborhood resulting in the police parking 6 squad cars, with full emergency lights blasting, on my street. It was scary for the neighbors and the person they were interviewing turned out to be innocent. This aggressive response probably allowed the real perpetrator to get away. A less frightening and better use of resources would have been for one or two squad cars to complete the interview while the other 4 canvased the neighborhood searching for the perpetrator. A very scary over aggressive response, resulting in trauma for a law-abiding citizen and the neighborhood, and letting the perpetrator get away, was unnecessary. This should have been better managed, my respect and support for my local police department is gone.

We noted the four-hour parking limit and made it a point to return to the car right as four hours was ending. My car was still there. With a red paper stuck to the windshield. Crap. We hadn't made it back in time. I opened the ticket and looked at the timestamp: 11:28am. Only an hour after we had been there. Confused, I looked up, looked around, and then started to notice the red permit parking signs scattered among the blue four-hour parking signs. Actually, the signs said: "PERMIT PARKING MON-FRI 5AM-6PM" "OR 4 HOUR PARKING." These two signs were right next to each other. Clearly, it meant that we could have a permit or park there for four hours. Right? I started snapping photos of the confusing signs (and lack of certain signs) near my parking spot as proof against the ticket. Meanwhile, I spotted a woman with her flashlight looking at cars. Ah, the parking enforcement officer. "Excuse me," I showed her the ticket, "can you help me figure this out?" "Oh, you're in a permit parking zone." "But the signs......." She smiled, "Oh yes, I know. It's so confusing." She explained it happens all the time and I can just try to fight the ticket by writing a note with the ticket and dropping it off at the village hall. All of this with patience and a smile on her face. I thanked her repeatedly before getting in my car and driving away. An hour later, I went to the finance department of the village hall and the woman behind the counter sent me over to the police department. Once at the police department, I was being assisted by a nice police officer until I saw the same lady who gave me my ticket! She came around to the front of the counter, greeted me with a smile, and started to talk with the officer about helping me waive the ticket. Since I had the photos of proof on my phone, I was told I would have to go home, print the pictures, and mail them out. She generously offered to let me email her the photos so she could print them out the next morning and attach them with my ticket. Floored by the fact that she was going above and beyond to help me, I agreed and she wrote down her [work] email address for me. Then she unexpectedly takes the ticket from me and says, "You know what, just forget about the ticket. I'll take care of it." Shocked, I say, "But... don't you need to document this or something...?" "Don't worry about it. You're being so nice about this. Happy Thanksgiving!" she replies with a smile. Me? I'M being nice about this? Sure, I was being pleasant about the whole thing (I've learned that it's no big deal to be annoyed or angry about these kind of things), but this lady was just so unexpectedly nice about the ticket. Seriously. I was nearly in shock. "Wow... thank you so much! Happy Thanksgiving, too!" was all I could say. She took the papers, smiled, and walked away. Stunned, I left with a heart growing full of gratitude for all the kind people in this world. She made my day. I realize that the village/police department aren't probably always going to be this nice and lenient when it comes to parking tickets, but my experience today was so, so pleasant. Five-star pleasant.

I'm having a medical problem, I got real angry neighbors called the police. They gave me transport to my urgent care clinic and told me "911 isn't just for full on emergencies. It's also for things that can become an emergency if not rapidly treated. Treat it like you would the rapid response button in a hospital" They couldn't have an ambulance transport me to urgent care so they arranged for me to ride the back of their Ford Interceptor police cruiser which I found super cool! It was a very safe and comfortable transport. Plastic seats are plastic seats they're comparable to riding the CTA 'L'. In fact a bit more comfortable than the older CTA 'L' trains, so that's saying something. These cars are nice transports. so don't complain if officers offer you transport. These people are here to help and they are eager to help the needy and people with special needs. The officer was very nice and conversational in the car and had a good rock'n'roll station on the radio offering a nice backdrop to the journey. I wonder when Uber will add Uber: Black&White to the service tiers. Free for people in emergent need of medical transportation These officers and our fire and ambulance service deserve a trophy for what they do. Not only have they provided me service today that triggered this review. They've provided many helpful services in my history of living in Palatine, helping me track down and terminate noise issues in the neighborhood, to massive medical emergencies years ago including three near death events that if it weren't for the skilled and speedy EMS response and caring staff I would be dead. Their response rate is extremely fast. When you call for an ambulance it's there in a minute or two tops. When you call for non ambulance medical assist they're there the same speed. We had a power line catch fire at our old residence, the fire department was fast to respond, about two minutes and a pumper and hook and ladder were there. Back then I was a little child so I was super scared. The fire department firefighters were extremely calming and reassuring after extinguishing the fire and shutting down the utility, they also helped me handle calling the utility company to get our service restored after the line was repaired. I don't understand why people are trashing the police department and fire department, these people are true servants of the public and they deserve recognition for their service to us.

They kicked me out of the house and he didn't get in trouble at all for dragging me all over the house and putting his hands on me. You have a…read moresergeant (at least I think he is a sergeant, I actually have no idea what is name/rank is. He was so unremarkable that after looking at a picture of the Northbrook PD, there were at least 4 different officers that could be him) who pretends to be compassionate and understanding, but you can see the insincerity gleaming from his tiny beady eyes. He is the kind of guy whose life revolves around the police- probably has a part time job working as a cop in another city, maybe teaches "criminal justice" at a community college, consistently gives out the most speeding tickets each month, all while drinking himself to sleep each night so he can forget about the fact that his wife left him and he never had a son to play catch with in his empty back yard. You almost feel sorry for the guy, but then he opens his mouth and you suddenly feel the urge to thank the woman who broke his tiny grinch heart. While I can't say anything positive about most of the officers, I must give credit where it is due. The star is solely for Officer Kim (ignore the fact that I had no choice but give at least one star). He actually deserves 5 out of 5 stars and is by far the best officer I have ever met. Unfortunately, Northbrook PD has come to my place more times than I care to remember. However, Officer Kim was the one stand out member. Unlike the rest of this motley crew, he was professional, acted with integrity and deescalated the situation easily (which is a lot more than I can say for the sergeant above, who only made the situation worse and straight up lied to the hospital staff). Sadly, no one from the department will read this and even if they did, it wouldn't matter because my opinion won't change anything. Regardless, I still want to say that if all policemen were like Officer Kim, maybe people would actually trust the police instead of looking at them with disgust. I know I would.

We live in Los Angeles and we purposely chose February to experience a real Chicago winter. As luck would have it, the week we chose was acting like spring instead of winter. We kept waiting for snow and when I saw that it was set to snow in Highland Park, we hopped into our Lyft and headed over in the winter clothing we had really made an effort to invest in. Los Angeles is boring that way - we're deprived of four seasons. We had no problem getting to Highland Park but when it came time to leave, no Lyft driver wanted to deal with the winter storm. I spent at least half an hour trying and failing to get a Lyft driver. When we crossed paths, officer Amy Hyndman asked if we were ok or needed help, because she said she saw us standing there for a while. When I let her know our dilemma, she had us walk to the police station (which was a very short walk) and then she had the staff call us a taxi to ensure we'd make it back to our hotel. She said that, this way, we could stay warm while we waited. This would never happen in Los Angeles. She really didn't have to do that, but it truly demonstrates her excellent character. Highland Park Police Department is extremely lucky to have her and so is that community. Thank you, officer Hyndman, for your kindness. It's been over a year and my mom and I still sing your praises.
