It's a bit of a stretch to call this a "mountain", but it is an absolutely STUNNING place to photography PGH from! I recommend coming around sunset/sunrise or even at night! Fading natural light is a great contrast to artificial city lights. If you do this, I highly recommend bringing a tripod. There are some decent places to eat up here as well! I hiked up through a trail system from the Sheraton, it was a blast! read more

Amazing views of the city both during the day and at night! Curbside parking can be a bit hard to find on some weekends, but I don't think most people stay too long, so spots should come up. There are several observation decks and some coin operated binoculars. From here you can see the two stadiums, downtown, and several bridges. It's gorgeous at night when everything lights up. I even saw someone doing a proposal on one of the observation decks. Many people come here for casual photoshoots too. These views are definitely worth checking out! read more

Martha liked to be on top. Each night she would, as legend goes, Mount Washington, and ride him until dawn. It's how he drew his strength - although I didn't realize he was a sketch artist until now. Mount Washington is the type of neighbourhood that dreams are made of, as Bogey would say. It's one of the most beautiful places in the Pittsburgh area, and is both inspiring and moving. The views here are second to none. They might be the most awe-inspiring city views in the world. It's in the West End of the city, close to downtown, far up on a mountain overlooking the skyline, and all the bridges and rivers. Surely there are very few neighbourhoods this picturesque and gorgeous and breathtaking in the entire country - or in fact the entire world. There are several balcony spots that jet out from the sidewalk that gets you even closer to the view so you have 180 degrees of free and clear view. Pittsburgh locals and visitors alike know that this is a beloved spot, one that's best recognized for its views of the city's skyline. I myself not only have delightful childhood memories of visiting Mount Washington and Grandview Avenue - I still enjoy visiting it as an adult. A quick note: Grandview Avenue is the stretch of road that includes the stunning Pittsburgh views we know and love; it also includes multiple viewing platforms that make it easy to gaze down across downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. Grandview Avenue is sometimes casually referred to as "Mount Washington" - and "Mount Washington" can be used to refer to just this street or to the entire neighborhood. (My sincere apologies to visitors if our casual discussions of this general area ever cause confusion!) Mount Washington isn't just a spot to take in the view, though. It's steeped in history, as are so many spots in Pittsburgh. It has connections to the city's mining days, and it used to be a major part of the city's transport system when numerous inclines carried freight and passengers up and down the hill. Today only the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines remain, and the incline stations have visitor areas that are kind of mini museums. They're worth checking out when you're visiting this beauty spot. Even if you don't go into the incline stations, I believe there are information boards posted along the hill's walkway that provide some basic information about Mount Washington and the city. As mentioned, there is an entire neighborhood mere steps away from the Mount Washington overlooks. Pre-plague, it was always a delight to stroll through the area and not just along Grandview Avenue. Restaurants, bakeries, shopping...it feels like there's a little bit of everything to appreciate and enjoy. Of course, these days, I'm placing curbside pickup orders at eateries and shopping through websites. It's not the same, but it'll have to do for now! One thing I've noticed about the Burgh is that there are many hills, and most of those hills are covered with houses. Walking through the 'tourist area' of the neighborhood, there are soo many beautiful and historic-looking houses to gaze at... I could only imagine how much some of them cost! Mount Washington also has areas that don't face downtown Pittsburgh. I didn't go that way, sticking to the railing and the lookout points that offered some incredible views of the city. Many cities have their "look-out" spot, you know that building that towers above the rest with an observation deck that gives you that picture perfect view from XXhundreds of feet in the air. While I'm sure there's a building within the city of Pittsburgh with this, there really is no better vantage point than looking out on the city from Mount Washington. To visit Pittsburgh, especially if driving in, you'll notice that you seem to be driving in through forested hills for miles and then all of sudden a city pops into your view seemingly out of no where - pretty sweet. It's these very same hills that surround the city of Pittsburgh and atop one is Mount Washington, not a mountain in the traditional sense per se, but certainly a worthy long and winding drive up to a small neighbourhood build right into the side of the area - and we're talking hella fancy homes with views. for. days. The main road opposite these homes is where you'll drive along in search of parking - it wasn't overly hard to find and it was free. Then you can walk along the side walk for views OR walk out onto any one of the many pods the extend out from the street over the forest and roads below to give you the best views of the city you could hope for. Luck was on our side this past weekend as the sky was clear, the weather was crisp and the leaves had almost all turned a Steelers Gold. Colour me mystified! This was the last thing we did before hopping back in the car home and was the best way to wrap up our weekend. A must see when you visit read more

This is a must-see when in Pittsburgh. I can't vouch for the view in the daytime but at night it is absolutely breathtaking. You can see all of Pittsburgh lit up.. including all of its beautiful bridges. You can purchase tickets to ride the incline tram up and down (roundtrip is $3.50 for adults. Free for seniors 65+ and children under 5). On top where you get to take in these beautiful views is actually a neighborhood of houses and a church, etc. I saw a lot of cars just parked temporarily on the side of the streets, not sure how strict they are with patrol there. Anyway, it was gorgeous. I loved it. Definitely highly recommended. It's also a great idea for date night for all the couples out there ;) read more

Being a tourist visiting Pittsburgh, and traveling without a car, it was a bit difficult to find stuff to do in the middle of February. It was Superbowl Sunday, and we had time to kill before the Big Game. We had lunch at Primanti Brothers and someone suggested taking the T-transit to the Monongahela Incline to come up here. Fortunately for us, it was a nice day (in the 40s), sunny and relatively clear. We took the incline (free with a T-transit transfer) and took photos of the city of Pittsburgh and the 3 Rivers. There's nothing negative to say about this outlook, and pretty much the highlight of my trip to Pittsburgh. read more

At the top of Mt. Washington are the best views of all of Downtown Pittsburgh, which is a beautiful City. You can park at the bottom and take the Incline up (that is very cool) or drive to the top (and also take the Incline round trip) and park and walk a bit. The views really are splendid. The three rivers meet (Monongahela, Ohio and Allegheny) and the bridges are beautiful. You can see Three Rivers Stadium from there and the wonderful buildings that make up Downtown Pittsburgh. There are some lovely homes nearby. There are a few good restaurants in Mount Washington as well. read more

At the risk of sounding cliche...the view here is one of my favorites in the world. Many a late nights would I come here during my college years to decompress and day dream about life in general. I'd always come at night where teenagers would showcase their parent's hotrods or tuners would come showcasing their cool neon lights and would occasionally get loud with people rolling down their windows and blaring their music, but nonetheless the view was more than sufficient to tune all that out. To enjoy the bird's-eye of the downtown skyline, husband and I rode the Duquesne Incline up Mount Washington and then walked a mile along Grandview Avenue to descend the Monongahela Incline. Despite being warned by several locals that to walk between the two stations was "impossible," "not pedestrian friendly," and "grueling," we found this constitutional to be quite doable, helped by sidewalks the whole way, and fairly easy. Between the two stations are several overlooks, each offering a slightly different view of Pittsburgh. The overlooks seemingly stretch out over the river and you feel floated over downtown. The houses, churches, libraries, apartments, and businesses along Grandview Avenue are mostly quaint and attractive, too, a vibrant, unique neighborhood giving off a welcoming, communal vibe. If you skipped a trip up Mount Washington your visit to Pittsburgh, you'd be missing out. read more

If it wasn't for a detour, we would have never come up through Mt. Washington early this morning, and it's been a little while since either of us have been here. Normally I would avoid this area because of the traffic and revelry. I empathize with its residents for I too resent revelers using any neighborhood as their toilet. However, the fact that it was between 1 and 2 A.M. during the week made Mt. Washington's cliffside viewpoint tranquil rather than obnoxious. There was no bass to heard, no wannabe superstars, no orange bimbos, just quiet beauty to behold and the warm summer air to caress us. Being here directly after attending a loud concert was like soaking my feet after walking all day. I had forgotten how spectacular Pittsburgh looks when The Moon gets the upper hand. Mount Washington is one of Pittsburgh's best areas. It offers spectacular views of the city and has some of the finest restaurants overlooking the city. Among these restaurants are Monterey Bay fish grotto, Altius, and the classic LeMont restaurant. There are two inclines that service it-the Monongahela and the Duquesne. The Monongahela incline is currently closed for a 3 month renovation project but the Duquesne incline is still operable and there are some overlook extensions to take pictures. Many brides come up here for wedding pictures. Near the Monterey Bar there is a historical statue of George Washington and Guyasuta a predominant Indian chief during the French and Indian war. If you wish to drive with a view then head up McArdle roadway prior to entering the Liberty tunnels southbound from the city. Mount Washington provides one of the finest viewing areas for fireworks throughout the year. It does tend to get very crowded so if you want to catch a different glimpse of them head over to Grandview Park near Bailey Ave that is another hidden vantage point. There is a nice bakery called the Grandview Bakery you might want to check out. Shiloh street is the main business district. Sycamore street is indeed a challenging drive along with its windy roads. That street is often used in bike marathons. Finally the neighborhood is graced with vintage homes worth looking at. Most of the city's tunnels including the Wabash tunnel run through it. It is a great way to see Pittsburgh and the north shore from a higher level. read more
