I was surprised to find that Lake Moreno was 3,000 feet and would be 68 degrees for its high today. Lake Morena is the highest in elevation and the most remote of the San Diego's reservoirs. You go through the guard gate and stop at the Ranger Station to pay for day use parking, fishing and boat rentals. If you bring your own boat or float tube, they do a check for, the invasive, zebra mussels. You can also get a card for entrance to all county parks. There are restrooms and a really nice little museum at the ranger station that is worth stopping to see. You drive into the park and pass a cute little children's playground and a youth area. It would be a fun place to let kids play at the lake. You see the lake as you drive farther in. You can see the darkened area on the dam where the water level was so much higher in the past. The dam dates to the late 19th century and, when it was full, the lake had a depth of 157 feet. San Diego (and all CA are in a huge drought causing serious water shortages) withdrew 2.1 billion gallons water from the reservoir causing the lake to drop to its current 83 feet. As you drive, you pass an lower boat launch where the water level is now and a upper launch where it prior, you can see how different the lake is today. There are cabins to rent and many other camping areas nearby the entrance to the Lake. The cabins are really barebones-you need to even bring a air bed or topper for the wooden frames to both the double bed and the bunk bed in each cabin. They are cute and would be fun to stay. Lake Morena is one of San Diego's reservoirs holding water for the city. Not sure if it's true but-they reduced the lake water level to half to fill a lake for the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, I was told by someone who's camped here for years. The lake is below 50% level and this caused it to get warm and cause an algae bloom. Fishing is not great except for carp and maybe catfish. Boating was fun although since the lake is down, it's much smaller leaving less places to go. The boat launch has many row & motorboats to rent. The lake was extremely green. Maybe a spring turnover or algae bloom. You can't swim-and I wouldn't if I could! I still recommend Lake Morena- Reservoir very much for a day to be on the water or just relax or spend a few nights where it's cooler than being in the desert!

Took my…read moregirlfriend out last weekend and for about $45 TOTAL we got a beautiful 45-minute train ride as well as admission to the Train Museum where they have more train cars to explore including a well-preserved Jim Crow-era segregated car as well as John Spreckles' personal caboose. And the volunteers who work there are really nice and very well informed. I would love to take visiting friends and relatives out for the experience but I would also gladly go back by myself just for the train ride. Seriously, if you don't mind the drive out there (and why would you - the mountain scenery is gorgeous), this might be the single greatest value in terms of a local weekend excursion. I can't say enough good things about this place. It's probably a bit out of the way for school field trips from the city, but kids will especially love the experience.

It was perfectly flat and shaded by a huge tree. Close by the restrooms but not right next to them. The restrooms also were pretty well maintained, only running out of tp on Sunday morning, but kept clean throughout the weekend. The restrooms are also heated, which was much appreciated in the evening and early morning when the temperature dipped into the 50s. We plan to return and book a few of the spots around the area for a group camping trip with friends in the future. Only downside was the amount of foxtails but I'm hoping that a spring visit will lessen the amount of those and possibly bring some grass instead. We also liked all the activities around here, including dog friendly hikes and the boat rental. We also happened to be there on a night where they were showing an outdoor movie (Hocus Pocus) and they had a hawk talk during the afternoon.

Perfect Summer Day Trip for the family!!!…read more We surprised by 6 year old son with a visit last weekend and he loved it! The Motor Transport Museum is a free museum, however a donation is suggested and very much appreciated. The museum is run by volunteers and is only open on Saturday's and the 1st Sunday of each month. I never caught the names of the volunteers that were on site when we visited, but they were very nice and full of knowledge about the history of the cars and the iconic Mill building. When you arrive, you will go into the Mill. They have a guest book that they will ask you to sign and there is free bottle water available to all guest and other soda and snacks available for purchase. From there the volunteer will give you a tour of the Mill and tell you all the history of what they do there. It is a great little tour and we appreciated it so much. After the tour, you are free to roam around and explore the property. There are a ton of unique cars, truck, buses and other machinery all around. You can easily spend an hour to a couple of hours here. HIGHLY recommend a visit. We paired this adventure up with a ride on the Pacific Southwest Railway which is about a mile and a half down the road. Makes for a great day trip for the family.

This little school of 4 renovated classrooms has served my family so well for several years. They welcome kids 18 months (don't need to be potty trained) to Kindergarten, open 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM, all year long. Very easy access from 94 or 125 freeway, reasonable rates and curriculum mostly in English with some Spanish. My oldest son (now in elementary) had a very easy transition to Kindergarten in public school, because all he learned at Jump. My little girl who is still enrolled at Jump is thriving: she loves going to school, learns songs, does beautiful crafts, even got potty trained there!!! If you are looking for a preschool, this is THE place you want your precious child(ren) to be!

This is a family owned campground…read more I am going to provide the important information first for those who end up at the campground in a pinch. When arriving especially late at night when approaching the campground you will see a single overhead lamp Illuminating a sign that says Mountain Empire along with a phone number. You we will see a trail to your left and to your right. Use the right Trail and follow it along until you get to the main office. The left Trail will take you there also but it is hilly. It seems spooky at night but it should be only a 3 - 4 minute walk before you get to the office. If it's late at night just camp and deal with the fee in the morning. Trust me on this and read the review for why. Tell them Andy the Asian kid says hi. Review: I had no information before I made my way there by bicycle, from San Diego--except for the conversation that I had over the phone. The lady said that I could enter the campground 24 hours a day and all I had to do was ring the bell at the front door to check in. When I got there at midnight, the owners were asleep. Ringing the doorbell instead caused the dogs to unleash their barking all night long. I instead ended up pitching a tent and dealing with the fees in the morning. So if you arrive after hours just go ahead and camp as the owners will make their roundabouts each morning to collect the fee. The owner's name is Gary. Gary and his family are extremely nice and welcoming. He seemed to take pride in his land and gave me a walk around to show me the place. There is restroom access, along with a laundry area. I didn't look in the laundry area but the restroom is accessible at all hours. Also if you are pitching a tent be sure to watch the ground. I ended up pitching my tent where there are dry shrubs which ended up poking through. On a side note my mobile carrier is T-Mobile and I don't get any signal out there.
