Our roof had sprung a leak and we needed to get it fixed before all the "atmospheric rivers" for which Seattle is famous, came rolling in. It turned out it needed to be replaced completely. Aza was recommended to us by a friend who is very hard to please and as soon as we met him, I understood why. Of all the roofers we got bids from, Aza was the ONLY one who ventured all the way into our attic to inspect the water damage. Everyone else just took our word for it. When we asked for a bid for our garage as well, he was the only one who looked closely at it and told us, in detail, what needed to be done to make sure the roof lasted a good long time. Everyone else just measured the square footage and gave us a quote for slapping a roof on top of things that needed to be shored up first. It had been 19 years since we've had new shingles and our roof still had the original 3/8" plywood from when the house was built in 1969, so we were looking to do a complete tear down. The shingles were starting to fail and the plywood was in pretty bad shape, after having three or four sets of shingles over the years. After getting estimates from four companies, I chose to go with MGR and they did not disappoint! Aza took the time to go over every detail with us and even offered to paint the plywood for the soffits before they went up, as our yard is on a slope and would be difficult for us to do ourselves once installed. The crew arrived early both days and worked together like a well oiled machine. In addition to covering the perimeter of our house and plants with tarps, they protected our rear windows and sliding glass door with sheets of plywood before tearing off the old roof. They cleaned up the site on Day 1 before leaving and after the work was completed on Day 2, they did a final clean up. Even though it's only been a couple of days, I have yet to find even one nail! MGR was the highest bid, however Aza listened to us and provided us with the most detailed estimate! I also wanted to replace the shingles on our shed and they did a fantastic job. We have what I knew would be a challenging roofing job: tall 4-story townhome on a hillside with very limited and tight access. Most roofing companies I contacted didn't even bother to respond as a result. Aza and MGR was recommended by one of the folks at Cornerstone Roofing who basically said: "This job is too complicated for us but if anyone can get it done it will be Aza. MGR didn't disappoint. Aza did a thorough assessment of the job and even made some clever recommendations to reconfigure our high gutters for better performance and easy maintenance. Aza came out and did the MOST thorough roof inspection. He went up on our roof and drafted up a plan very quickly - which you might expect is the standard with inspections and quotes but you'd be surprised with other competitors we researched and how they use a drone or just look at Google Maps satellite view. You can just tell he's very experienced and knows what to look out for and how to draft up a plan that's best for the house. He was very communicative, responsive over phone and email, and spelled out every detail and decision we had to make. I really appreciated that attention and care. One other detail I found very impressive was that he called MULTIPLE times to see if we wanted to get the project started early because "his team finished another project early". This just indicates how efficient and effective his team works. And in reality, they were super efficient. There was about a team of 4-8 people who came by (all friendly, professional, etc.) Finished our re-roofing project in total 16 hours over the course of two days. I was SO impressed by how the team even came and tarped our property and put boards up by our windows so that as they hauled out the old material that things wouldn't get damaged. Mountain Goat Roofing was introduced to us by Homeowners Club. Excellent attention-to-detail, knowledge of housing codes, awareness of potential issues -- and a professional crew. Introduced to us by Homeowners Club, Mountain Goat Roofing stood out from the 3 roofers that examined our 37 year old house, last roofed 20 years ago. All 3 roofers climbed on the roof and examined it during their first meeting with us. The other 2 roofers stopped there, and provided estimates that removed/replaced the roof. The representative from Mountain Goat -- who was the president/owner, Aza -- took additional steps as described below, while keeping his price competitive: - Took a look at our attic to verify the construction of the "chalet" roofed portioned of the house. - Since building codes had changed since our house was built, he included the addition of a small "cricket roof" behind our chimney in the re-roofing work. This prevents buildup of debris behind the chimney by ensuring that rain washes leaves, etc, off the roof instead of trapping them next to the chimney. - Noticed that the ceiling of our kitchen had been raised (by us), and that this changed the air flow in the area between the roof and the ceiling. He included establishing improved air flow in the re-roofing work. - Provided a list over several pages of houses in the area his company had re-roofed, with information on the color and type of tile used. This allowed us to see how some of the colors looked in the "real" world, and helped us decide on the color for our house. - A gutter on an upper roof drained on a lower roof. The water then flowed over that lower roof into another gutter. Moss tended to grow where that water flowed. Aza said he would improve the situation, and his crew installed a piece of gutter pipe between the upper spout and the lower roof gutter after installing the new roof. MOREOVER, though I had expressed hope that the color of this new piece of gutter would match the (black) roof color and not the white of the existing gutter, I didn't expect it would be possible. Pleasant surprise - Mountain Roof painted the new pipe black to match the roof. Looks great! - We wanted the roofer to install small pieces of wood under our eaves to cover a gap between the soffits and the roof. Mountain Goat was the only roofer who said (and without my even asking for it) that they would paint the wood pieces to match the house color. We provided Aza the paint color codes, and thus his team was able to install pre-painted wood strips and (where needed) replacement soffits. The other roofers planned to install white-primed wood and leave the painting to me. (Aza also gave me the leftover paint.) - There was a small gap in the side of the house near the roof, a potential attic entry point for insects. Mountain Goat caulked and painted it over. Aza and I had discussed it, but it was not included it in the estimate. The work was so minor I frankly didn't expect it to be remembered or done. To my surprise, his crew did the work without being prompted. The on-site Mountain Goat workers were unobtrusive. So in full disclosure I have personally known the owner of this company for years but I am a tough critic and don't ever write reviews online but I felt I needed to. It all started with a roof that was leaking and at the end of it's life. I called for a quote and he came right out. He checked out the roof and tried to find a way first to see if it could be patched or a less expensive solution (which I appreciated immensely). Without asking, he gave me pamphlets about his his workmanship, materials, references and local houses I could drive by to look at for the work. He also gave me a list of homes to drive by to look at for the coloring of the roof. He told me which colors were true to the pamphlet and which were not. He took multiple calls from me asking all sorts of questions ( i felt like I was nagging him). Technically, they're way out in front, using the latest, high-quality materials. I got three bids; his was 5K below the highest one (big name in roofing locally) and comparable to the fly-by-night guy who works alone out of his 1985 Chevy pickup. It felt kind of like a miracle to me. They showed up right when he said they would, a big crew of able-bodied folks who immediately went to work. There was a miscommunication between me and the estimate scheduler at Mountain Goat, as I only needed some minor roof repairs and ventilation improvement and they were only taking full replacement projects on at the time. About 15 years ago, hired Mtn Goat to do complete tear-off and put down 40 year composite. West side looks fine, but east side(not visible unless up on roof) developed leaks and holes allowed critters to invade attic. Instead of tear-off, roofers just slapped a layer over remaining 3 layers, not discovered until this year. Have hired pest control, roof repairs, repair and removal of black mold in house and reinstallation of insulation. More reroofing on east side still required. Have spent over $23,000 to date. Mtn Goat also skimped on the flashings, which Starburst Gutters fixed within two months of paying for the roof job. Starburst charged about $200, saying inadequate flashings were obvious. These guys were great from the time they came for the estimate through the clean up. The estimate was very reasonable and not pushy. The owner made it clear that they wouldn't cut corners. The crew came with their own truck (no dumpster) and completed the work in 3 days (1,600 Sq ft house). They were very polite and played Christmas music on the radio (it was December 2013). No swearing or rough talk which we appreciated. The quality looks great and they spent a considerable amount of time with the flashing to get it right. They even trimmed the vertical siding where it was close to touching the roof to cut off old rot on the bottom edge for free. Wow! Using PS Consumer's Checkbook, I contacted 5 companies and got 5 bids for my roof--requesting the same asphalt shingles (Consumer Reports). The bids ranged from one ludicrous quote to one reasonable, the rest in the middle. I was using Yelp recently and thought that I should submit a review for Mt. Goat. I'm an engineer and structural inspector, so I consider myself to be a nitpicky pain in the butt. That being said, Aza (the owner) was fantastic and personally involved in our little project. The crew was solid and very fast. The old roof had two layers and we had the 40 year old plywood replaced also. They tore off the old roof and installed the new roof in two days. They did a reasonable job protecting my wife's plants and with cleanup (though we still find the occasional nail). Because we had the plywood replaced, the eaves all need to be painted, which is a pain for the upper floor. If I had to do it again I would still go with Mt. Goat, but ask them to deliver some of the plywood ahead of time to prime and paint it before it got put on the house. read more
