Oh how I'm a sucker for pottery! I went up to Idyllwild this past Saturday to escape the heat of Palm Springs and ended up here. This shop is next to the Stationary store I came up to visit. Beautiful pottery by local Artisans. I was welcomed in by one of the shops owners who promptly asked me if I was there for the Mayor's Birthday... Max is his name and he is a beautiful Golden Retriever, sadly I was unaware of such an occasion but it is duly noted for next year. Gorgeous mugs, bowls and plates are here. If you are like me and prefer one-of-a-kind service ware, make your way up the mountain and peruse their offerings. I got this neat garlic grater that is so beautiful just grate the Garlic and then pour the olive oil into the same dish Voilà your good to go! They also offer pottery classes here as well. One item I wanted to purchase but refrained was the candle that had the scent of rain after it's initial descent on the earth Petrichor - there were 2 choices one with pine forest scent and one with wild flowers... they come in lovely pottery urns (not very large). My husband and I traveled up to idyllwild for the day to take a pottery class - first timers. The owner is such a nice lady and very patient/accommodating. We were able to make 2 items each included in the couples price and got to pick the glazing color. Only downside is it took 4 weeks to dry, but overall such a fun experience. Wish we lived closer. read more

My husband and I went up to Idyllwild to stay @ the Idyllwild Inn...and to have dinner @ferros. We then had breakfast @ the red kettle and afterwards pottery @ mountain pottery. Todd was our patient instructor. He led us towards completing pottery pieces with a serious belly laugh aligned with humor and reality. A truly fun experience. Just my husband, Todd and I. Highly recommend Todd was patient, kind, tutored us as necessary... yet also allowed us to overachieve and fail at piints....while also jumping in to point us in the right direction when timing was right. We ended up with 3 viable pieces out of 4! Definitely recommend. Will do again read more

Besides hiking and chilling coming here is our top favorite thing to do in Idyllwild. We are from San Diego and have come at least 3-4 times. We bought ceramics at first in their artist member gallery. Then we eventually decided to extend our stay long enough to take a class. We used to only stay 2 nights in Idyllwild but now we book 3 nights in order to fit in a private ceramics class. We have taken private workshops between 4 women as well as a workshop with our primary school age sons. The instructor and owner is a VERY good teacher with my active and nutty 7 year old. The boys LOVED the experience and I was pleased we could spend quality time and enjoy doing an art project. To me it was worth every penny to create these type of experiences with family and friends. Also of note, the owner is was an educator in her past career which is why her communication and patience is soooo good with school age children. I'm a fan! We will definitely continue coming back to Idyllwild as this is a regular part of our routine here. Plus the location when the doors are open is just scenic and lovely. read more

My wife and I took the 90 minute beginners pottery training session that Helen offers at her pottery studio in Idyllwild. It was a great experience. The first part of the training was her walking us through the steps involved, the tools used, positioning and techniques. This is then followed by the hands on training at the wheel. Upon completion, she even glazes your work with the color of your choice. The training was at the perfect pace, and Helen is a very patient teacher. She ensured that all attendees get the individual attention to succeed. Time just flew when we were in the pottery training session. It is very informational, engaging, therapeutic and helps you appreciate the intricacies of this art form. Thanks to Helen for the wonderful opportunity. She is amazing at what she does. We took the two hour pottery throwing class and had such a great time! It was our first time ever throwing pottery and Terryann was very patient and willing to teach. We made three different pieces and will be back to glaze them. Would highly recommend if you'd like to get your pottery on up in the mountains. A great way to spend an afternoon. read more

We took a two hour pottery throwing class with TerryAnn and it was SO MUCH FUN! I highly recommend stopping by here and spending a few hours with TerryAnn, Helen and other members working on their projects. They are so encouraging and help you create 1-3 unique pieces depending on how fast you are and how much time you have. You can come back a few weeks later to glaze your piece or they offer to glaze it and ship it to you. We will definitely be back! read more

Little did we know our best experience on our visit to Idyllwild would be learning potter's wheel basics with Jason. His expertise and passion for his craft made our lesson quite unique. He gave us direction and guidance, but he also added in his own learned tips, tricks, and philosophy that gave us insight into potter's knowledge that we couldn't get in one of those big classes somewhere else. Jason and Helen's open-air studio was lovely to visit and full of inspiration, including gorgeous pottery for sale (all done by themselves and artists who create on-site). Such a nice vibe there. We met another potter who makes these precious little "berry bowls," (one of which we purchased) and told us of his life experience, taking a break from the rat race, on sebatical, to work with clay. They've got a little community of talented, kind people who they nurture at this peaceful, creative haven ... a supportive environment, nestled in a cute little mountain town, away from stress and pressures of big city life. Not to say there's small-town mentality here. No! These are educated folk with no pretenses, no airs, just a love for fine craftsmanship. I speak with an art education, myself. This isn't one of those bachelorette-party-pottery-paint-shops: you learn the real deal here! You can make something quite special ... or you can mess it up in a big way! Haha, we did ... and it was all fun! If we get a chance to return to Idyllwild, it will simply be to come play with clay at Mountain Pottery! read more

Mountain Pottery rocks! I took a Leaf Dish Workshop on Saturday and had a great time. I made an impression of my leaf in clay, then cut it out and smoothed and sculpted it. It gets baked this week and glazed next week. I'm back in a few weeks to make an address plaque. They also have other classes and workshops. Lots of fun. read more
