First, we enjoyed our stay. The KOA recommended this place for our needs. If we could give 4-1/2 stars, we would. I'll detail the pros and semi-cons (there aren't any big cons). Pros: 1. The staff is very friendly and helpful. 2. We'd been concerned with the name of the place that it might be filled with political signs (there is a park in Creede that is filled with hateful signage and it was scary, frankly) But there was no evidence of anything political, and everyone we met was nice. 3. We only needed water and electric hookups. They have a few spots like this, which were cheaper and the woman I made the reservation with advised me to wait to come by a few days to save money. The spot was pretty darned flat and, though close to others, worked just fine 4. The spots are shady. Lots of trees. 5. We don't have a dog, but the place is dog-friendly, and people pick up after their dogs well. 6. The women's bathroom was pretty darned clean. One evening there was hair on the shower drain, but they clean in the morning, so no issue. Semi-Cons: 1. The men's bathroom apparently wasn't as well maintained as the women's while we were there. They have 3 shower stalls for the men and just 2 for the women. Two of the men's shower stalls had broken hooks, and one was completely missing a shower head. My husband made due, and I reported the issue to the desk, so hopefully this gets addressed with whoever maintains the men's side. 2. It was extremely muddy when we were there, so we had to watch where we stepped and drove. It would be good if they would replenish the gravel in those areas during conditions like this with monsoon rains. 3. We had two nights with a couple near us running their A/C all night which was annoying. Especially since it was cold outside, like around 40 degrees! They could just open a window? But there's no rule against this. Maybe the noise rule could be expanded on colder nights to cover A/C when not needed? 4. We think blackbirds or woodpeckers ran over our roof every morning and evening for periods, waking us up. No one seemed to know what this was about, and I don't expect them to do anything about it, it was just scary when it first happened and we didn't know what it was. Weird. That's never happened to us before. So, if you hear tiny running sounds while you camp, it might be these ornery birds! :-) 5. The wifi was spotty. I was able to get on a Zoom, but it was a little wonky and on our phones, it was out as much as it was on. Most RV places have this issue, but the other reviews led us to believe theirs was better. Also, not theirs to fix, but AT&T sucks in this area. Better if you have Verizon or T-Mobile from what the office told me. 6. They have a cowboy statue outside the office and they place a radio thingy on it that plays country music all day when the office is open. I used to work in country radio so it doesn't really bother me, but it might bother others, so recommend maybe not playing the radio and let the campers choose what they want to listen to? So, you see, not much in the way of cons. We would go back if they'll have us. Their intent is good. read more

We paid $150 deposit for July 10-13 to attend the Crested Butte Flower Festival. However, due to the fires and smoke in the mountains, we asked if we could reschedule for next year and apply our deposit to 2027. Since we wanted to change less than the 10 days (about a week), they forced us to forfeit our deposit. we offered them a $20 cancellation fee like the other campgrounds that worked with us, but they refused. We are very disappointed in their lack of cooperation under the circumstances and will not be booking with them again. read more

This place stands out above all other campsites and I spend 5 months a year in the rv. The attention to detail is amazing. We wanted a fire ring and a grill, it was setup when we arrived, all of them are portable. We pulled in and we were level without leveling. The showers and bathrooms are immaculate. Pool and foos-ball are free. And most of all, the wifi during the day is stellar. I need good wifi to work. The coverage area is good and the speed is good and in places very good. Those that run the place are friendly and quick to offer advice. I love it! read more

This review is for the monthly sites in the back of the campground - it's nice and quiet in the back, with more space than other spots on the campground. We felt like we had some privacy, which is unusual at RV parks these days. It did get very buggy though in the summer being right by the water. As for the other sites in the campground, they seemed to be closer together and there was some property creep during holiday weekends with trucks parked sideways and tents set up on RV sites. We had family who stayed in one of the cabins as well. It was nice and clean. There was no toilet paper inside on arrival, but that was quickly remedied by the office staff. I'd recommend their cabins, especially if you hate bugs! I loved the honesty at this place. On my laundry day, I accidentally left my coin purse in there. I didn't realize I had left it until I went there to do laundry the following week and it was missing. There were lots of quarters in the purse so I was sure someone would have taken it by then. But I was mistaken! I went to the office to see if they had it, and they said a guest had turned it in, and they still had it with all the change inside. Faith in humanity restored! I'd stay here again! My favorite was the convenient location. I could walk to the bus stop that takes you to crested butte for free - what a deal! And I could also walk to garlic mike's when I craved Italian food :) read more

We've been camping all around Colorado and needed a place to shower. As a Texan, this place just called to us! $10 a piece got us a hot shower with great pressure, clean bathrooms, and a neat little shower stall with a fold down bench to put your belongings. June 11-18, 2017 The Tall Texan RV park just 2 mi. North of Gunnison, CO proved to be a great find. From totally shaded large deciduous trees throughout the campground (yes there are tent sites) to the clean restroom/showers, laundry facilities, and beautiful large clubhouse/community center...we found this RV Park to have it all and then some. Paved bike trail/sidewalk to town and walking bridge just a few steps north providing beautiful views of the Gunnison River. Owner/Manager Janusz and his staff are very friendly wanting to make our stay as nice of a memory as possible. We stayed one week, but wish it was a month. Michael Adams read more

What a horrible experience. The owner of this establishment is such an uninviting prick - we will NEVER come back here, and recommend the same for everyone else! First off we had a member of our party go in to confirm our reservation, which took almost half an hour. The whole time the staff was warning our friend that the owner was an asshole. The rest of us waited out front and chatted with some neighbors who were incredibly friendly. Out of nowhere the owner came up in our faces stating that we needed to leave because a dog was not on a leash. When there were half a dozen other dogs running around without a leash. We have a collar with a retractable leash that we showed but the owner did not find it amusing and was so incredibly rude I could not believe it! He was about to call the police over such a petty thing! Needless to say we will never ever come back here and highly suggest that everyone else seeks an establishment that treats patrons with respect! read more

Good location. Nice and shady. Great internet reception. Friendly escorts/maintenance guys on the golf carts. Special shout out to Randy who was especially friendly and helpful. We made a last minute reservation. Told all that was left was a "deluxe" site. When we arrived I asked what was deluxe about the site. Told it was larger, on the pond and in a quite location at the back of the park. More like I paid extra for a tiny spot on a swamp next to a guy with barking dogs. The RV behind us was too large for the spot and infringed on our space. Should be charged for a space and a half with the set up they had. Car canopy, mat on the grass, and using our spigot as well as the two on their site. The guy with the dogs was very apologetic. Went out to breakfast and left the dogs behind. PS: water pressure was low and had a smell to it. read more

The tall Texan was an ok spot. The staff is great Kathy who took our reservation was very sweet and helpful. Belinda was also awesome helping us to our camp site and giving us pointers. The campground is in a great spot though, 45min out of Crested Butte (we did some great hiking there) and 5min from Gunnison for anything you might need. The down side is that the facilities are old which usually wouldn't bother us but at $55 a night we've stayed at some really nice resorts. read more

The very friendly owner helped us get checked in to our cabin around 7:45pm (w/ no prior reservations). It was too cold to camp in a tent for our 1yr old and this was an amazing second choice! Great price as well. We will be coming back, and recommending them to other travelers! It was a beautiful campgrounds with a lot of RV campers. The experience here was so bad, I'm not sure where to even start, but I'll try... When we pulled in and parked to register (we had two trucks and an RV), the woman that co-owns this Nazi camp of an RV Park came storming out of the office literally demanding that we move our vehicles into the properly marked location near their office. The registration process was ridiculous - I wasn't certain just how long we were staying - none of us had a tight schedule and we were playing it by ear - they pushed us for a final date to leave, we refused and they actually ridiculed us for not being able to specify a date. The pinacle of all this was the following: As we were walking out of the office, I said to my dad, "I can't believe how rude they were", she (the owner) heard me and ran after us. Once we got outside (in front of everyone), she started screaming at me (literally) saying, "I don't give a damn where you stay, get out of here...I don't care where you stay!" I can't make this stuff up. It was unbelievable. We of course would have left as I'm sure anyone reading this would wonder why we stayed, but my buddies in the RV were already registered, parked and setup, so we just dealt with it. It just goes on and on. The entire park is incredibly littered with signs stating what you can and can't do; a simple reflection of their poor attitude toward customers. To conclude, this was easily the worst customer service experience I've ever had anywhere, let alone an RV Park. Stay away, they do not deserve your business; with all the RV parks in the Gunnison area, plenty of other options exist. read more

I agree with Kevin that the registration was a bit of a joke but if you are nice to them they will be nice to you. We ended up emergency tent camping after our other spot turned out to be a bust. Honestly, I was pretty happy with the Tall Texan. Its not beautiful but its got a bathroom, shower and a place to pitch a tent/RV/Truck. If you can get a spot in the back by the creek its really not too bad at all. read more

Nice campground on the north side of Gunnison. There are a lot of shade trees there. We were there when the trees were turning, so it was very pretty. The sites appeared to be well maintained, and the bathrooms were clean. Had a playground for the kids too. The staff was very friendly. We will definitely return! read more

Had an epic time at the Tall Texan the last 3 nights. Shared a smaller cabin with a friend, clean unit with microwave, mini-fridge, shower and bunk beds. Plenty of hot water and a small table for breakfast and tying some flies. Campground was quiet and there is lots of shade from the tall trees. Easy access to town (5 minute drive) -or walk over to the Italian restaurant next door. Check in and check out was breeze, internet reception in cabin was seamless and allowed for work check in between stints on the river. The staff is great and I recognized several of them from my last trip out - guess they must like working here and taking care of folks. Count me in for 2021! read more

Where to begin, we rented the largest cabin. There were 6 people planned for the cabin that Tall Texan claimed could sleep 8. You would have to sleep 2 to a single bunk bed to make that work. These are not large cabins. Do not be misled. It is a stretch to have more than two people in theses cabins. The cabin itself was not clean. The bath room was dirty and the shower did not drain correctly. We requested that they fix the Wi-Fi twice. We were told that the cabin we rented is the only one that has problems with the Wi-Fi. The outside grill was filthy. It had not been cleaned from the last guest. There were cob webs in the ceiling and every corner was filthy. Plan on washing your car to get the sap falling from the trees cleaned off. Everything was sticky with this stuff. The kids playing on the playground equipment got it all over there clothes. The people who run it were nice and polite but didn't address the bathroom or Wi-Fi issues. The cabins and RV spots are crammed in like sardines. Very difficult parking. This cabin is definitely not worth the $200 a night the they get for it. Save yourself some grief, and not have to was your car by staying someplace else. read more

If you have a big rig, it will give you a heart attack maneuvering through the narrow tree lines paths. The owners were not very welcoming although to be fair, we had a late arrival of 11pm but we called early in the day to let them know. They insisted on waiting up. They spoke to us like we were children/idiots. I was told our site was right on the pond. The pond is tiny and we were at the far end last spot where it turns into a water retention ditch. I chose this place over the KOA in Gunnison for the pond so my son could fish right outside the door but that wasn't how it worked out. Most of the residents there are seasonal so they have their own little groups formed so out of towners feel a little intrusive. They have a store but not very well stocked. Garbage bins are far from the way back site we had. We were told to make sure our kids stayed off the grass next to us ay 11 pm Thursday although Friday morning it was mowed and Saturday kids were playing soccer on it and Sunday a new trailer pulled in and his dog was pooping on it. I guess it rooted overnight. Overall, it was a boring place, but if you are looking for quiet and relaxing sitting in the chair all day its ok. Also, the best part is it's proximity to Crested Butte 28 miles north, and Hartman Rocks and downtown Gunnison. It's a good base for fishing, river activities and mountain biking so for that I give it 3 stars otherwise it would have been 2. read more

My experience at the Tall Texan was beyond horrifying and is going to cost me much more than the $41.00 a night to stay. I will begin with the reservation process, I should have known then I was headed down a dark road, mistake one. The person to take my reservation was Cindy, she expressed that she was new and put me on hold for a long period of time, returning to say "I nice spot for you". I understood her being new and took her at her word she had a nice spot for me, mistake two. I arrived and was checked in by Sue who in conversation hinted she is the manager. In hindsight Sue could not manager her way out of a paper bag, She sent Larry to escort me to my site. Larry introduced himself, shook my hand and said "I am not good at backing people in". I have been backing my 22 foot Airstream into spots of all sorts since 2003 without help I was not concerned. Letting Larry assist me, mistake three. The site Cindy assigned me was not "nice" all the nice sites on the pond were empty and remained so during my visit. I was in a shitty site with a view of the road behind the rv park, while the pond sites as I said before remained empty, more on that later. So Larry the incompetent is "assisting" me into my site, I get there on the first go around but he says, no I want you closer to the pad (with the picnic table). So I begin again only this time Larry does not stop my and I back into a tree causing severe damage to my Airstream, literally parts falling off it. All these years of towing my trailer around the country on my own, never a dent or a scratch, that is until Larry. I was and am devastated by the damage to my Airstream. When I went back to the office to ask for an owner to discuss the incedent an older man said he could help, well Larry had already informed him, in his version of what happened and the man would not let me speak, saying in "we are not responsible" over and over until I simply walked out of the office in disgust. Later the man who never did give his name but was I assume posing as the owner came to my trailer wondering why I walked out, gee I wonder I thought to myself. We had a conversation, he said usually it his him who escorts people to their sites and let's them pick from the available, why he said this was not done with me given all the empty sites he did not know. The man did not offer me any compensation for the damage even after admitted the staff was clearly wrong. So I asked for a refund, this is not in my nature but I felt it was the least they could do. The man said he would have to ask. Ask who? Another day goes by, the man returns to my trailer saying he had a reply from whom ever and "no refund". My blood boiled. He refused to continue the conversation, got in his golf cart and drove away. New ownership I have heard people say. I do not know anything about that but the current ownership needs a lesson in hiring and client relations. Gunnison is a lovely town full of wonderful people, unfortunately the Tall Texan put a huge damper on my visit. I will return to Gunnison but NEVER to the Tall Texan which there was not tall Texan just a rag tag group of people who don't have a clue how to run a business. read more

We recently spent two months at the Tall Texan and we found it to be friendly and accommodating. The park was recently purchased and the new owners are planning to improve the park and, in fact already started. They are aware of the tight roads for big rigs and are planning on removing some trees to make it easier for big rigs to maneuver. That being said, I hate to see any large trees cut down because it adds to the beauty of a campground. I don't like to camp in a parking lot! However, we saw several big rigs there and our own RV is 36 feet with three slides and there were larger RVs there. The owners had several activities set up for the campers to participate in. The activities were primarily for the adults but they do have a very small playground for the kids. I don't know if they are planning improvements for that area. Over all we enjoyed our stay there and plan on going back. read more

We were a bit concerned having read many of the reviews, but after learning it was under new ownership we thought I would give it a try as Gunnison had much to offer. The new owner has clearly worked hard to improve the prior issues of the park as my experience was wonderful. Clean park, clean restrooms and very accommodating staff. Based upon our experience, you should not fear some of the older, poorer, reviews as it clearly appears the new owners cared about us our rig and our experience. Gunnison is a great place to spend a weekend or a month. So much to do from hiking, 4-wheeling, fishing or simply relaxing. read more

I tent camped here for a few days back in May 2018. I had a very pleasant experience. Everyone, including the long time RVers, and the fellow tent campers were very friendly and it felt like home while we were there. The bathroom area was a bit outdated, but clean. It was also very nice to have the laundry facility. My only two concerns were that bears rummaged through the garbage cans every single night! Although we have stayed at the Tall Texan for over ten years, we will never return. If you choose to make a reservation, be sure that you ask for a written confirmation. We made a group reservation in April. Due to a confusion with the office, we were double booked for a second cabin we did not want. The owner angrily called me, asking where we were and informing me we were going to be charged for a reservation we did not make. He refused to discuss the issue with me calmly, simply repeating that he had charged my card and I needed to come use the cabin. If you choose to stay here, be sure you get your reservation in writing. I did not insist on this and was charged over $400.00 for a cabin we never asked for and never used. I was very saddened that we could not resolve the issue calmly. read more

I hadn't visited the campsite under previous ownership but from what i've seen in the reviews it's done a complete 180 under new ownership. the owner and staff were very friendly and helped our crew get checked in and set up in a timely manner. restrooms were always clean as well. didn't have any issues the entire trip and i would recommend the tall texan to anyone looking to get away for a weekend. read more

Stayed here once before & had an ok experience. Came back & will NEVER stay here again. Previous spot flooded due to rain - so when I called to reserve a spot this time, I asked for one in a different area. Was told she could accommodate me. I called 2 days later to confirm & asked if I was in the area I had requested & was told yes. Well, guess what? I arrived today & was told I was in the area I requested NOT to be in... when I questioned the lady at the front desk, she said "oh, they shouldn't have told you that. When they do that & we move you, it causes problems". YES IT DOES! I wouldn't have booked here had I known that's where they were gonna put us. Oh & guess what? It was raining & the area is flooded... DO NOT STAY HERE! The owners do not care. Stay elsewhere. You've been warned. read more

Do not stay at Tall Texan RV Park & Cabins! I had made a reservation ahead of time for 5 nights at $30.00 a night for a tent site. When we first pulled in to the campground, I was dismayed to see that it was situated in a cramped space packed to the gills with RV's and no views to speak of. I pulled up to the office while my daughter looked around the "playground". She was very disappointed, as the swings were cut and there wasn't much to play on. When we were shown our sight, I became even more discouraged. It was in a muddy pit and we were surrounded by other tent campers 5 feet away in every direction. We were not allowed to use the electric hook-ups without paying a $10 deposit and $1.00 a day charge. The water spigots were flat to the ground and there was no place to wash dishes. After spending one night in this site, I asked the owner to please allow me to move to another site. He offered to have me move my tent in front of the office by the road! Not a safe place for my daughter and no water close by, so I declined. I asked to move to an RV site that was up out of the mud and he only agreed after charging me an additional $15.00 a night. I was so desperate to get out of the mud, I reluctantly agreed. That evening, we were in the office where there were a few tables for patrons to come in and relax and socialize. There were also some games to play like pool, but again, there was a fee . Also, the wifi only worked in the office, and it was snail slow. As I was in the office, I overheard the owner talking to a patron over the phone. They were trying to cancel a reservation and the owner was speaking very condescendingly to the person on the phone and refused to refund them their money. I was not impressed with his costumer service. The next morning, my daughter and I decided to pack up early as we were not enjoying the campground. I went to tell the owner, and as I suspected, he refused to refund even a part of the remaining three days of our stay. He said that the policy was a three day cancellation notice, so therefore, he would not refund me a dime. Even though he was technically correct, as an owner of an establishment that builds its business on people trying to enjoy their vacation, he had no sense of customer service or customer satisfaction. We did enjoy the area of Gunnison, and there are plenty of other campgrounds in that area with beautiful views, much lower costs and better customer service. If you want to get away from rude people, crowded places, and a stress free environment, do not stay at this campground! read more

This review would have been much higher except for how our stay ended. I will start at the beginning, my husband did the check-in so I cannot speak to that. The gentleman escorted us to our campsite, # 69, and insisted on "helping" my husband pull in to the site, which is ridiculous, because we've been doing this for a long time and have never needed assistance. He also said when we're ready to leave come and get him and he will "help" us back out. The campground is extremely cramped. They have people stacked up all over the place. Absolutely no privacy, but that was fine with us. The campground looked to be kept up nicely. And it was quiet. We stayed for 2 nights. The morning we left, we did like we always do. We packed our stuff up, and since it was such tight quarters, I got out and guided my husband out of the spot with no problem. since it's not what we normally do, it didn't even occur to us to go and get the man to help us back out. As we were pulling out of their driveway my husbands phone rings and he answers it to the man from the campground literally screaming at him that we drove over the corner of the pad and cracked it. I can assure you, that did NOT happen. My husband told him he needed to stop screaming at him and that he was just plain wrong that we did not run over the pad, it did not happen. The man proceeded to accuse us of lying to him. We will be watching our Discover card statement to make sure he doesn't charge us for anything. Our advice to you would be, if you were going to stay here take a photograph of your campsite before you pull in and immediately after you pull out. read more

The only good thing about this park is the pretty 10 acre property with lots of trees (mostly cottonwood though so be prepared to clean the a/c, screens, etc. The bottom line is that they charge a VERY premium price for a VERY sub-par site and experience. Other than in front of the office no road base has been put down on the roads or gravel in sites for years. Our site was narrow and nothing but dirt with a few blades of grass and weeds sticking up. Our site and the roads between the sites at our end of the park were total mud bogs with deep puddles when it rained. Their very nice office/community room/game room closes at 6pm so what's the point in having it when most people are gone during the day. The bathrooms are small, with old plywood stalls and old, cheap, small plastic shower inserts and only 2 toilets and 2 showers for 89 or so sites. They're not super clean. We couldn't use the picnic table at the site comfortably because, regardless of where you put it, we could almost touch the unit next to us. There were a few nicer sites. They need a tiered system for nightly rates. We should have paid a much lower rate than we did. I certainly cannot recommend this place to anyone and we certainly won't go back. I camped here about three years ago and just recently. The campground is very wooded with mature trees. It does have a small pond on one end of the park. Restroom and showers were clean,. If you have kids there is a small playground, no pool. A previous review commented there are a lot of rules, which is true. But it is a very nice quiet campground. The owner himself guided us to our spot and everytime we seen him after that confirmed we were enjoying ourselves. I will be back. read more

Horrible RV park and owner. Was told we had specific site in April and showed up in July and owner said he gave this to someone else because he could make more money. Had coleman cook stove on their picnic table (not hot) and came back with nasty note taped to RV door that we were in violation of their rules, even though it was not used on the table. Cottonwood trees got sap and cotton all over RV and vehicles that required daily wash to be able to see out of windows. Would definitely not recommend this park or it's owner. read more

This is a calm and peaceful environment. The restrooms are sparkling, the management is helpful, kind, and went completely out of his way to accomodate every need we had. We were not sure when we'd get to Gunnison, we did not have a great plan for camping accommodations, but i called, and not only did they make room for us, they made it so we would not have to move for the holiday weekend. Twice I have been asked to be sure we have everything we need, not pro forma, but from the heart. I recommend Tall Texan without hesitation, and thank them from the bottom of my heart for all the help. read more

Sorry guys, but I disagree with you on the registration process. I find it is similar to most small park that I visited. The office manager was quick to assist her worker and provided excellent customer service. We found her to be knowledgeable and we were very happy with the site assigned to us. The office provided great information and recommendations about the surrounding area and events. On the contrary, If any person was rude it was the outside maintenance owner which interrupted the office gals constantly and barked out rules about tables, etc before we could even introduce ourselves. We had difficulty in understanding his meaning and especially his broken English. He shouted at my husband for pulling to close to the cement slab and hook-ups. Later, he stopped near our site and glared at us. Very uninviting and uncomfortable, so we will not be back. The couple next to our site said he reached in their vehicle and grabbed their steering wheel. Now that's ridiculous! read more
