The town itself is very laid back and is a nice change from many of the more tourist orientated towns in the Colorado mountains.

The phone service was no good but that is was is so fun and relaxing about small remote towns. It's nice to unplug. They did have WiFi that worked okay for things like checking email but not for streaming or anything like that. The shower in the bathroom was super nice but it was one of the fancy ones that doesn't have a door, it's just half glass and open the other half but when you did shower the entire bathroom and room got super humid and muggy. Hotel is dog friendly which was awesome for our pups. Also, they only take cash and check but they are super flexible!

The breakfast has become a motel 6 continental. No eggs, no gluten free (come on! Even Cheerios is gluten free) limited coffee availability. The wine dispensers? Let's see. My first $9 glass sputtered and was empty. The second tasted like vinegar. And no a front desk person in sight to help make it right. Tiny sandpaper towels. Did this place change owners? We brought three other couples with us this time and I feel a bit embarrassed by the quality decline.

To be fair, my review is focused on Unit #1, the unit we rented for three nights. There were a few positives about this unit. The queen size bed was comfortable, if a bit soft. The small kitchenette was very nice and the unit was very clean and updated. There was also direct access to a lovely shared outdoor space with a gas fire and comfortable furniture right on the Crystal River. Now the bad part...there were no lamps by the bed that were bright enough to use for reading. What was there looked like it came from Great Aunt Gertrude's place when she died - 40 years ago. The TV was mounted on the wall opposite the foot of the bed and was too small to see from the bed. We tried to watch the US Tennis Open finals and couldn't even read the scores. Unfortunately, it was mounted so that the only place to watch it was from the bed. There is a very uncomfortable futon that acted as a poor excuse for the only seating in the room and there was no lighting anywhere near it for reading. In fact, the bedroom and bathroom were both very poorly lit. There was a cheap two-door shelving unit that was evidently intended to be an armoire. The owner accomplished this by adding a curtain tension rod inside for hanging clothes. Unfortunately, the rod fell any time there was more than 3 hangers on it. The bathroom was quite small, but manageable with the EXCEPTION that it had absolutely no storage for toiletries. Would it hurt the owners to hang a small shelving unit over the toilet so that there is someplace to put a toothbrush, hairbrush, and the other toiletries used by anyone traveling?? In addition, the tub was extremely slippery and there was no bath mat or grab bars to help an older visitor to get in and out of the tub/shower. That is a lawsuit in the making. The entire complex is extremely badly soundproofed - we could hear every noise from every room - and I'm sure a family of elephants was living just above us. Supplies were minimal - there was no kleenex in the room and no Saran Wrap or foil in the kitchen to help save opened food. For the price it wasn't much. We won't be back and won't recommend Crystal River Villas to others.

From the shuttle driver/porter who picked us up at the airport and got our bags up to the room before we even checked in... to the service team who runs a legit full-on (complementary) breakfast every morning, to the concierge who helped us avoid a couple ill-thought choices ... really a great and attentive team. So that's where our mind was this evening after coming back from July 4 celebrations in Aspen, then we kicked it on the patio for a drink and by chance happened to strike up a conversation with Brandon and Deisy, had a great time meeting new friends. It turns out Brandon is on the leadership team with Limelight so we had deep philosophical discussions about hospitality, as I'm a restaurant guy and he's a hotel guy ... cutting to the chase, this organization has exactly the right leader and team to continue raising the bar of excellence here among a very competitive field...
