Cooper Creek Campground is absolutely the most beautiful, off the beaten path, places I've ever…read moretraveled and it's practically in Atlanta's back yard! Located on the beautiful and noisy Cooper/Mulky Creek just an hour north of Dahlonega up Hwy 60 and then up some of the most beautiful and winding mountain roads that make you think you're never going to get there! By the time you turn on to Forest Service Rd 236 (a beautiful and peaceful dirt mountain road that climbs up through the pine and hardwood forests), you realize there is something amazing waiting for you. And there is. Cooper Creek Campground is like reaching a little slice of heaven. Fifteen campsites scatter through out the lush forest, and five of them sit right on the banks of Cooper/Mulky Creek. I advise getting there early during the week so you can get a creek side spot ... there is nothing like it! The creek is rocky and noisy and if you fish, the trout are plentiful! I walked the loop and all of the campsites were beautiful and within easy walking distance to the creek. As a solo hiker and camper, I chose spot #1 for the way the creek opened up and the trees opened up around my tent site to give me a clear view of a beautiful moon. I also liked the quiet solitude of this site ... few cars passed here since it's on the back loop. The campground hosts also live two spots up. As an avid (delirious almost) rock stacker, I fell in love with this creek. The rocks are amazing and perfect for stacking and balancing. It was so relaxing I stacked till after dark and was up just after sunrise stacking again! The pine cones in camp are plentiful, so I got a good pine smoke going and didn't have the first mosquito or black fly. I'm telling you ... this place is heaven! After dark a bunch of deer came through my camp and lapped at the creek for almost a half hour. Two fawns frolicked in the fern thickets next to my tent for a while and were bouncing around like puppies! With the light of the moon, I felt like I had a front row seat for natures big show that night! Also, there are synchronous fireflies here, which surprised me. Just after dark during the Summer Solstice, I thought it was kids playing with flashlights, but it was fireflies, all blinking in unison! It was amazing! I can't WAIT to go back! In fact, now that I'm home, I'm missing it. Cooper Creek is open year round and keep their gates open 24 hours a day. You won't get a phone signal here, so you may as well turn it off ... the solitude is amazing! Each site has a tent pad, grills, lantern pole and a picnic table. There are also bear bins that are an easy walk from each site for discarding trash. For hikers, you won't be disappointed. There are five interconnected trails that start in or near the camping area (Yellow Mountain Trail- 3.2 miles, Connector Trail- 0.4 miles, Mill Shoals Trail- 0.9 miles, Shope Gap Trail- 0.6 miles, and Cooper Creek Trail- 1.7). I found myself hiking in and out and exploring trail after trail. The abundance of trees at Cooper Creek keep the temperatures down, much cooler than up on the main road. I paid $10 a night for my site. There are faucets for drinking water and there are two vaults for bathrooms. There are no electric hook ups or dump stations. Primitive camping at it's finest! There are no reservations ... everything is first come, first serve. Have fun everyone!

Long Ridge is a very well run camp ground with wonderful bathrooms and showers. They have spots for tent and electric and water van hook ups so they cater to all manner of camping. And while they advertise two night minimums online, if you call a person they'll let you stay for one night. Our neighbor smoked cigars and had slow R&B music playing till about 9pm and then it was quiet. We able to get a fire started fairly easily at our site. There was a pond with fish in it for catch and release only. No other amenities. The night was quiet and got down to the low 50s and I slept well enough to function the next day. All in all a great time here.

The hike was nearly 10 miles round trip and quite challenging. The weather was perfect, though a bit humid from recent rains, and we were soaked with sweat. We felt like we finally found a team with determination and patience. One of our new team members, nicknamed AlphaGo, had previously hiked ABC and EBC in Nepal. He was an amazing hiker, full of knowledge, humility, and a righteous manner. We truly enjoyed his company, along with his wife's.

Water is available via a hand water pump across from site #8 and the toilets are vault toilets but were well kept and did not smell horrible. The stream is gorgeous stream and loud enough to drown out most road noise. There are some hazardous trees and one 6inch tree did fall while we were there this weekend during a thunderstorm. At the back of the campground is a ~2 mile trail that connects to the AT. Most sites have a tent pad that will accommodate a 10'x10' tent. Sites 2, 4, and 8 driveways can really only accommodate 1 car and there are no extra parking spots. Driveways for sites 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 can accommodate 2 cars. Sites 1 and 3 are adjacent to the road and is going to be impacted by road noise. There is no campground host so be prepared to either scavenge wood or buy it in town, same goes for ice.

We had a beautiful…read moresite on the water and were able to fish, swim and tie our boat up right in front of our campsite. Every site has a picnic bench, fire pit, water hookups, 30 or 50 amp hookups and pretty level gravel parking areas. WiFi is spotty and towards the end of the campground (second loop) it's pretty much non existent. We have a repeater and tethered off our phones which worked well for us. For campers with trailers or RV's there is one dump site for all, none available at individual sites so if you stay for awhile be aware of this. Some folks called a guy who came in and pumped their black water tank for $25. The camp hosts will have information for you if interested. Public restrooms are old, need some TLC but otherwise they're clean. There is a shower with a curtain. Fun hikes/walks just a quick drive away at Jackrabbit Mountain. Beautiful walk from your campsite across the Chatuge Dam. Mornings when the world is waking up and evenings at sunset are my favorite times to wander over. Beautiful place to relax and regroup. See update at the end of this review:…read more We have always loved this campground until a recent incident. Last May, while camping there, we made reservations to camp Oct. 21 - 27, 2019. There were three couples and we all made our reservations at the same time. On Sept. 30, 2019, it was necessary for one friend and I to cancel these reservations, which we did by phone to the office. Recently, I noticed that we had not received the deposit refund, less the fee of $10 for the cancellation. I called and was told there would be no refund because it was a holiday weekend (their Halloween event)...WHAT??? Since when is Halloween a holiday??? lol....I asked for the manager and was told she would call me...No call....I called on Oct. 29, 2019, and was told there would be no refund because it was leaf season (changed from Halloween). Their refund policy is below: Cancellation Fee Holiday, Fair/Festival, Special Event weeks: A 2 week notice is required for cancellation or you will be charged for the full reservation. Regular Camping weeks: Cancellations made prior to 7 days before your arrival will be charged a $10.00 cancellation fee. This fee will be deducted when refunding a cancelled reservation. Reservations cancelled less than 7 days prior to arrival will not receive a refunded deposit. Holiday and Special Events During holiday and special events, a three-night minimum stay is required. Deposits for holiday and special events are nonrefundable. Once the reservation is CONFIRMED, you will be charged for your entire stay if you do not show up. We are deeply disappointed with the management of the campground. I note for the record that they will lose all of our future business, potentially amounting to hundreds of dollars, for the sake of cheating us out of $28. Campers beware. UPDATE (11/7/2019) I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The campground's response follows: "River Bend Campground has special activities planned well in advance for this particular weekend ( Halloween Weekend) for our children and families which is important to all our campers that book with us for this weekend, we always have a booked campground and have to end up turning people down. When people start cancelling, they have taken a site that someone would have loved to have had. The reason we have the cancellation policy that we have is due to not being able to book that site because people have already made other plans. I apologize that you disagree with our rules but every business has to stand behind their policies. Many campgrounds would have charged the balance in full at the time the reservation was made for any time in October, so we feel that we are being more than fare by only charging the one night. Even though that weekend was not a "special" weekend for you, it was for many others. Thank you." CAMPERS BEWARE,
