The race track, giant lite bright wall, air tunnels win giant puff balls to send through, innovation center to create and build things they can take home, and the view from the roof to see trains coming into the station are our favorites! I don't know if it's because I'm from LA and I go often to the California science center (which is free), but I feel this isn't worth the $15 they charge. They just throw some balls and boxes around and kids create stuff. Eh. Only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because my son is 5 and he loved it so I guess it's great for the young crowd. I'll stick to going to the science center for free though. read more

We spent about 2.5 hours at Moxi. Horrible parking so just park at the train station next to it. Free for 75 minutes and only $1.50/hour. There are three floors of activities and we spent about 45 min on each floor. The top floor is a rooftop floor with a water table so if your kids might want to get wet, bring clothes. This is the kind of museum that is interactive and many of the activities take some reading comprehension skills so it's not like your kid could just roam around and understand everything they are playing with or exploring. One thing I didn't notice while there was the fact that when you are outside on the first floor, if you look up, you can see the kids playing on the third floor through the ceiling. My kids are 12 & 14 so I thought I might be pushing it with a trip to the MOXI, but since I had heard it was so great I decided it was worth a try. It is a great value for the experience and we were all totally entertained. Our favorite exhibits were the car races, the air chambers for the balls and the huge lite brite. To find out there was a children's museum in Santa Barbara was exciting. I waited until recently to attend. Unfortunately, it was underwhelming. I took 3 children, a couple second graders and a pre-k student. We spent only about an hour in the 3 stories of the museum. Honestly, as a parent and an educator, I was hoping there was going to be signs explaining the science of what was going on so that adults could interact with their children. There wasn't any of that. Just "Touch Here" "Move this" "build a car" etc. It was more like a distraction than any sort of science. I was very disappointed, but the views were wonderful! read more

Such a cool place to take your kids. My 7 year old and 2 year old really enjoyed this place. We parked in the parking lot across the train tracks and walked on over. We were there for about 4 hours. Great place to explore with your children. Although it is a smaller space the multiple story buliding offers familiar (favorite) exhibits seen at children's museum/science center in larger cities. Horrible experience and customer service. I spoke with Sophie Bush who said she was the manager but didn't help at all with the situation and in fact wasn't accommodating at all. I used my ASTC card here previously with no problems, but this time she did not accept my card. Instead She made a snarky comment saying "it's nice that you got to see it for free before but that was an exception." I can't believe she is a "manager." I also have ASTC memberships at multiple museums and told her to check the list if any other museums qualified- she didn't even bother to check and straight out said no. I've had many friends come visit this museum using the same membership I tried to use today and they also had no problems getting inside. For someone who drove hours and beyond over "90 miles" to visit SB and Moxi, I'm extremely upset with the service & treatment that I received today and if this is what represents Moxi, I don't recommend this place at all. read more

My kids absolutely loved this museum. I had been wanting to take them for last year and we were finally in Santa Barbara. It had so many fun things for them to do. I think the highlight for my son was making and racing his car. The only down side was that it was super packed. I thought it would be a little slower since it was a Monday, but there were so many kids, it was difficult to get a chance to do everything. The car station was pretty chaotic and we had a hard time finding all the pieces we needed. Other than that, it was a lot of fun! read more

We absolutely love the moxi, except it sucks that it closes at 5pm. Thy should consider having summer hours and stay open later.

Finally, Santa Barbara has an amazing place to take the kids inside. So much fun for the family, even the 16 year old. A little slice of big city in our small town! Highly recommend this place for those with kids! read more

Such a fun spot! I brought a three year old and a 20 month old with me and they both had a blast! It's definitely geared for more school-aged children but there are many toddler-appropriate activities. It was fun to watch their little wheels turn as they tried to problem solve and experiment. We went on a Monday morning anticipating it would be a slower time to visit but it was actually very crowded. I wish I hadn't brought my stroller with me. Also if your little one loves water-be sure to bring a change of clothes as there is a fun water based activity center on the rooftop that will leave your kids pretty damp! Amazing place for children to visit and explore while being introduced to innovative ways to use technology, raw materials , elements of water, air, and heat, and musical instruments amongst other interesting things to enhance playtime. The Moxi had musical instruments that played only by sun solar and the human heartbeat. This place had my 8 year old daughter's mind and body BUSY, and she LOVED it!! The tickets we purchased were affordable, and covered all day, so we were able to leave for lunch at the beach, walk down State Street, and come back for more play. Not to mention, each activity required her to be physically active using all motory skills. The staff were amazingly friendly, well educated and fun. I think going once a year would be beneficial for us, but if I lived in Santa Barbara we'd go more frequently. Btw, the Globe, the sound room, and the staff in the innovation room were the highlight of our trip! We were visiting from the SF Bay Area and have been to the Exploratorium recently, and we would say that they are very comparable. Moxi is a lot of fun. I would say that my 9-yr old son enjoyed the exhibits more than the Exploratorium but I would say it is less educational as there isn't much explanation on the displays about the science behind the exhibit. If you are in the area, it is highly recommended and more the worth the cost of admission. read more

At first my 3.5 year old son was disappointed that I was taking him to a museum before the beach but then we got here and 3 hours later I couldn't even drag him out of here to the beach. It is by far the best exploratorium I've been to, serves kids of all ages (and adults I must add!). This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip and the cost is incredibly reasonable for all that they have to offer. They do a great job in teaching kids and sharing information that is attainable to their young brains. Kudos to everyone involved in setting up this wonderful museum! read more
