A tequila guy came over and left bottles of tequila on the table for us to sample and each one was tasty. The menu is large and very Mexican authentic! You want it, they have it!!! Amazing!!! We have been coming to Mazatlán for years and have been told to go to Mr Lionso for seafood. The staff and atmosphere sat great. The food was far below average. I had the shrimp fajitas, the shrimp were not fresh and over cooked and tough with no flavor at all. Mr Lionso is a regular visit every year I am down in Mazatlan. Located on the Northern Marina which is about a 20 minute drive from the Gold Zone (about 10 bucks for a Pulmonia ride) this is an icon of Mazatlán. Outside you will find artists spray painting sheets of paper with sunsets and all things Mazatlan related (ocean, pelicans, etc.). Inside is a massive dining area with a tortilla and short order cooking station and a table you will see proudly displaying their own tequila. A live band playing American classics is playing all night long as shots of tequila are given out as much as you like. You have to do a shot of the snake tequila which has a massive snake curled inside the jug! I did it, what the heck. The food here is probably most known for what else, the lobster. I ordered the Garlic Lobster which is two completely lobsters cut in half with veggies and rice. The lobster is always cooked perfectly and the garlic sauce is great. I have seen mixed reviews but have never had a dissapointing meal here. A lot of locals come here but so do a lot of tourists who have heard about this place. Located on the beach, you can get lobster at lunch time out on the beach but dinner is the most fun. After dinner, they bring around the varies types of tequila to taste and of course you get to try as many as you want and as much as you want. I found the Almond Tequila to be so amazing I bought a bottle! It comes in a very cool bag with velcro that can be used as a small sling style purse for the ladies or if you are into a man purses, go for it! The staff have fun with you and the waiters all speak English well so you'll have no issues (menu's are in combined Spanish with English translations. This is a must stop place if you go anywhere in Mazatlan as it's an experience, not just a place to eat. We come here several times every time when we visit Mazatlan. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The sampling of tequilas is a bonus and we always leave with at least one bottle. The food is always good and portions are reasonable. 6pm begins their happy hour where drinks are 2 for 1. No skimping, they are on the large size and delicious. Our tour guide told us this was a good spot... we wanted some fresh seafood something to remember Mazatlan. Where should I start from the chips and salsa that we got, chips were stale , salsa had no flavor. They try and sell tequila, photo key chain while you are eating can't even enjoy your family time. On top of that a clown came in and asked the kids if they wanted balloons of course kids are going to say yes , when my son changed his mind he gave me a dirty look and made some remarks. Not sure why this place is so popular - but it is, to the extent that reservations are sometimes hard to get. Depending upon when you come and where you sit, you may or may not get a view of the ocean. Most people don't (care). The place is noisy, packed with oldies (mostly from USA and Canada) who order beer by the bucket (even after happy hour) and pretend to "dance" (but without any rhythm or grace) to (instantly "recognizable") American rock oldies (mostly from the '50s and '60s - but with a few more recent songs - from the '70s, as well as a few well-known songs in Spanish) played by a Mexican band starting at 8pm. Food is decent but not great. Service is S-L-O-W - and prices much higher than all the smaller less popular places nearby without a band charge. Tequila "tasting" seems very popular - especially with people who don't buy anything afterward. read more

I have been here maybe twenty times over the years and it's always been reliable for above average food at a decent price. Tonight was really disappointing. The service was terrible. The waitress could care less about doing her job. Even the tequila guy that roams the restaurant and sells bottles of tequila was lacking interest. He stopped by our table early in the evening and offered us free tequila and we told him great that we always buy a few bottles of their local tequila when we are there. This place was packed when we came on a Saturday around 2pm. They were quick to take our orders, we ordered 2 items: garlic shrimp & pescado zarendeado. The food took soo long to come out! The pescado zarendeado was red snapper (one of my favorites) but it was a bit undercooked and we had to return it back to the kitchen to cook more. Service is excellent!!!! We went to an all inclusive resort nearby and in 7 days we've been to this restaurant twice!!! On our first day we ordered the shrimp ceviche and some drinks. Right when we sat down the restaurant gave us chips and pico de Gallo on the house while we looked over the menu. A gentleman (we think it might be the owner) saw us taking pictures and brought us two bottles of snake tequila so we can use those in our photos (yes the bottles were super cool!!) he also gave us two shots of their own house-made flavored tequila on the house!! Shrimp ceviche, sangria, corona, juice, and coke cost us a total of around $12.50 USD. (Chips and pico de Gallo on the house, tostadas and crackers included with ceviche) The day before we left Mazatlán, we had to come back a second time. We again ordered the shrimp ceviche (because it's honestly the best I've had in my life) and also got their guacamole and shrimp fajitas. They again brought us chips and salsa on the house, and when we told them that the salsa was quite spicy, they made us pico de Gallo and brought it to us (free of charge). They then brought beans and more guacamole for us to taste (again, free of charge) and when we told them we're leaving tomorrow, they brought us two more shots of tequila on the house to wish us farewell! Shrimp ceviche, shrimp fajita (with your choice of corn or flour tortilla), guacamole, corona, 2x juices, coke cost us less than $23 USD...and when we gave them $25 USD and said we didn't need change the server was super happy(chips and salsa and pico de Gallo on the house) This restaurant has awesome people, wonderful food, great view of the beach, great prices, most servers spoke fairly fluent English and are super welcoming. Great food at low prices next to the beach I liked the most in Mazatlan. The owner, Mr. Lionso, is very nice as well. I recommend the special guacamole and the coconut shrimp. But you can't go wrong. This place is amazing. Beach view and good good and wonderful people. Truly appreciate the "Mazatlan" feel. Its far from the tourist areas so you really get a truly Mexican feel. And the beach is right there so we just ate out food and walked into the beach to cool down after sitting in the hot humid weather. You must have tolerance for loud music cuz there is a banda and a rock band right in the restaurant --which though it's open to the beach, it's all concrete. As a tourist, I thought this place was really great! The resort we were staying at didn't have a lot of seafood to choose from but Mr. Lionso had a big variety! Walking down the beach from the Riu, we were able to walk right up from the beach. There is a shower to wash off your feet if you need it. It can get busy when the surfers come in from a day out on the water. We were greeted and given samples of tequila that they make and sell there. We loved the coffee flavour. We ordered our drinks and I guess it was 2 for 1, based on the reviews, it seems its always 2 for 1? No idea. But it was a great surprise! The caesar wasn't Canadian quality but they tried. They had free wifi which was pretty awesome. The service was a bit on the slow side but they were able to seat us right away and it was very busy. We ordered the shrimp to dip which was a big plate of shrimp served with vinegar-y cucmbers and red onions as well as a green dipping sauce on the side. It was very fresh and enjoyable. I ordered the chicken fajitas which came with flour tortillas, refried beans, and guacamole. I used the salsa from the free salsa and chips to add some more to it. There was a bit of cheese on the beans and guac but I love a ton of cheese on my fajita so that would be the only thing really missing for me. It was very good and quite a huge helping. Some other tables had someone cook their meal in front of them on a flaming skillet. It was really fun to watch. We were not able to finish all of the food since there was just SO much! This was a great change of place from the resort buffet with a ton of great options. There's a few vendors in and around the area if you wanted to purchase any souvenirs. The service was slow, and let the racket of a bunch of vendors and acts to push services on you. Likely contaminated salsa, but my 8 year old has been vomiting since 1am. My spider sense was tingling, but my in laws wished to stay due to a good experience years ago. This is a unique restaurant. It's situated over the sandy beach and ocean. The view is great. There's always a lot going on. There's a store selling local products as you come in, live music is happening and there are lots of tables, usually full of happy people. It's lively and lots of fun. The beach is a local hangout so you can see families, surfers, and a vendor may stroll by if you're seated by the window. The menu has many items but really you come here for the shrimp or fresh fish. It's not really a meat restaurant. They serve it, but stick to the very fresh seafood and you'll be happy. They offer two for one drinks all day. They also offer you a free tequila taste at the end of your meal as they make their own brand of tequila and sell it in the store. read more

We visited Mr. Lionso Playa Bruja on April 10, 2019. The food was absolutely amazing. My husband ordered octopus and said it was cooked to perfection and so tender. We also ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp stuffed with cheese which comes as a meal and it was so good!! For an appetizer we had the crab chimichangas. Mmmmmm delicious! They also have their own tequila there and the Almond Tequila is so tasty. They offer free shots of their 3 different tequilas while dining there. Rainy late night with not many options close by brought us here and it was hands down the worst decision we made in Mazatlan. There was some cheeseball karaoke type singers playing songs catered to tourists. The food was AWFUL. We've had nothing but great experiences up until this point. They sucker you in to a 2 for 1 drink special, but the catch is it has to be per person. The real catch is that they suck. The margaritas were basically flavored slush. They give you 3 bottles of tequila to taste... none of which were any good IMO. The fried fish is the only reason I gave this place any stars, it was edible, but you can get better for half the price if you go to the little shacks on the beach by the Golden zone. The coconut shrimp was awful as well. They cater to drunk tourists and their tastebuds. Save yourself time and money. read more
