They put on a real party atmosphere here with loud music, funky lighting, cheap burgers and a happy hour on drinks from 5-6.30. My favourite thing though, was the deck outside. It's got a great view over Aotea Square and is just great to enjoy a burger and a beer before your bowl and watch the sun go down. Overall, it's a really great place. The prices were pretty standard and the staff really friendly. They even sell socks for $4 if you (like me) forget to bring some to wear with your bowling shoes.

It's close to home, offers a great rate per game plus sells some delicious wedges with bacon, cheese and sour cream and chives. The wedges are a perfect pre game treat that gives you energh to beat your opponent. I went there with a church group and we had a great time, the competitive spirit was welcomed. We did not get any funny looks for cheering each other on and the staff even laughed and clapped when we sung to encourage each other.

You sort of forget Newmarket has 10 pin bowling, the only clue of its existence is the sign on Khyber Pass road, the entrance is on York Street. You have to walk up these dingy concrete stairs that give you a bit of a workout but it is okay. Just don't breath because it is heavily scented with tobacco. The place is pretty big and not just bowling lanes, there is an arcade type area too and pool tables. There is a good amount of space between the bowling lanes making it good for groups too. Even though the place is old they do have electronic screens to keep track of the scores, no Flinstones system of a stone tablet and chisel. While Newmarket Tenpin Bowling isn't anything flash if you're just out to have a bit bit of fun with friends then what does it matter? You'll have a good time.

Whatever the cause of the smell is, the owners of the place should make an effort to at least do a clean up once every week . Secondly the bowling shoes are rather old and smelly, once again cleaning and buying new shoes in something the owners should look into. Thirdly this place is dark and dingy. I wouldn't be surpr if any dubious happenings took place! Last but not least it is not a mistake if your bowl and then the cones don't come down. Seems like everything doesn't work or is just old.

The greens are all weather and very similar to our indoor greens. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon and although no other Ponsonby bowls members were there, Tash and the Bowls New Zealand staff who are housed in the same complex looked after us and made us very welcome.

The patrons there will be genuinely happy to show you the ropes, an easy game to pick up but tricky to master. Less aggressive than ten-pin bowling, this game involves more control than speed. With two all-weather greens and pétanque you are basically guaranteed a game. A great way to catch up with friends or challenge workmates and get out in the sun with some competition and super cheap beers.

The first time I went , on a sunday, there was four guys drinking big bottles of woodstock and listening to classic polynesian reggae. Not to be held back, we played a game of bowls out on the (slightly uneven) turf. After observing our efforts, one of the guys inside came out and showed us some techniques. After a bit of gentle prodding, it turns out he is a New Zealand representative. I think this is really the perfect game for our generation - you don't have to move around much, you can drink while playing it (in fact, it seems almost mandatory.) This club itself is steeped in history, surrounded by pictures of former greats. It may have fallen on hard times recently, but all it would take is a regular attendance from a younger generation and it could be restored to a semblance of its former glory. I'll give it 3 stars, but it could be 5 based on the cheap beers alone.
