While I hope you do not have to deal with such a sad event in the near future, I can assure you that if it happens, Westford should be your first call. Here are just a few reasons why I recommend them so much: * They are kind, professional, and appreciate what you are going through. They see us at our most vulnerable. They get that. Yes, they are a business, one that has been in Bellingham for many generations. They are an important part of this community because of how they conduct their business, how cool is that? * Hard-sell tactics? Nope! We have all heard of that kind of nonsense from other funeral homes throughout the Pacific Northwest. You won't find it here. * Let's be honest, family can be...a lot...right? Stress, loss...they can make family dynamics difficult. Westford handled our issues, again, with respect, kindness, professionalism, and especially decorum. That's impressive. Oh, did I mention that my father-in-law passed away over 20 years ago? When he realized he was terminal, he decided to plan ahead, one of the many things I loved about him. Not only did he pay for his burial, but he also purchased his wife's (my mother-in-law's) burial in advance. For those of us who have noticed the cost difference between, say, 2000 and now, you know prices have gone up. Westford absolutely honored their agreement completely! They showed us the original invoice before we even thought to ask. Here is another perfect example of why I am writing this: her name is April. She walked all of us through everything. No pressure to "upsell". No treating us like we weren't important because we had already paid for everything decades ago. We were absolutely her priority. Wow. That is what you will experience at Westford's. She is such a blessing. And... I called Westford's today to ask to speak with Rob Westford, the owner. Honestly, I didn't even say it was a positive call, yet I was given his contact information without hesitation. I did contact him to ask him to call me at his convenience. He did! After speaking with him, it only reinforced why Westford Funeral Home continues to be the quiet leader in this area. As a dear friend of mine often says, "Management puts their own footprint on a business". Rob Westford is the epitome of that statement. My identical twin sister wanted to be buried in the ground in a shroud so looked on-line and found…read morethat Moles cemetery has an area in the back called The Meadow. It was a relatively short drive from Lynden, WA where we lived. Sis and I visited the cemetery about a year before she died in Sept. 2020, after a ten year battle with cancer. Her husband and I carried out her wish to be buried sans casket. I had my name and info put on the large rock that is her headstone because I planned to have half of my cremated remains put in with my twin's and half with my late husband's which are in the water off of Anacortes, WA. This area they call "The Meadow" isn't a meadow. It is infested with Poison Hemlock, Himalayan Blackberry, native but invasive Bracken Fern, and Common Tansy. Some graves have been completely grown over by these poisonous, noxious, toxic, and/or invasive weeds and the area does NOT look like a meadow with grass and wildflowers blowing in the breeze. I am a WSU-trained Master Gardener so prepared lots of information for the groundskeepers and owner of this cemetery to help them know what to do to get control of the weeds in this area. I first sent this information to them in 2022. The most that was ever done (that I saw) was the stand of Poison Hemlock was mowed down once. In exhasperation, I turned them into the Washington State Weed Board who said they wrote the owner a letter about the Poison Hemlock. Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, the road (more like a "car path") into The Meadow was closed to vehicles. They do NO watering in this area (which I was aware of prior to buying the plot) so in order to keep the one Red Flowering Currant and 3 Rugosa Roses alive at my sister's grave I had to pull a buggy to haul water way to her grave in the back. Water weighs over 8 pounds a gallon so by the time I was finished I was sweaty and mad! I am over 71 years old and still pretty fit but what about really old people who just want to visit their loved one's grave? That is a long way to walk to the back of The Meadow and especially on a hot or a cold day! I have tried repeatedly to get an appointment with the owner and was offered one date over a week ago but I couldn't meet on that date because I was going to be in Canada all day. I offered 3 other dates I would be available but have not heard back at all. So now I am writing reviews. Every word of this is true so I have no concern about being sued for libel. I wish I could dig up my twin sister's bones and move them out of that cemetery but their information given to prospective buyers specifically states that disinterment is not an option due to the nature of the burials (no casket). As a trained Master Gardener I do NOT want my remains put in what I view to be a giant weed patch!! I paid for this burial plot and with all charges added in, it cost me almost $10,000. (My brother-in-law paid for other charges having to do with services other than the burial plot.) A portion of that was for "perpetual care" of the cemetery but the only thing they ever do out there is mow paths once in a while so people can see to get to the graves. I am sure they would love for me to just go away, and I would love to, but I can't. I cannot leave my much-loved identical twin sister's grave like that. Another lady I met recently whose loved one is buried in The Meadow is also very distressed and called The Meadow "ugly." Since she couldn't drive back there, she used a garden cart to haul tools to her loved one's grave to tend to it. And another woman whose mother-in-law was buried there saw my post on a local Facebook group and said her mom's grave looked like a compost pile so I offered to tidy it up for her since she lives in Texas. I could go on and on but already have. It makes me want to cry that this is the situation we are in. My next move will be to look up the obituaries of every person buried in The Meadow and to contact their next of kin to see if they are happy with their situation. Maybe if there are more of us voicing our discontent then this area will get some very much-needed attention.

We did not have an appointment but were introduced to Heather. We immediately felt comfortable talking to her somehow.. maybe because we expected someone along the lines of a used care salesman but Heather was very genuine and admitted to us that she was somewhat new in her position there. We were very pleasantly surprised! There is a lot of information to consider and she walked us through all of it. The actual location is park-like with many themed areas and gardens. We were able to figure out much of it in just the one meeting. We also spent some time walking around and looking at the different areas. Very lovely place.. a fantastic place to take a walk and we saw many people walking their dogs. The prices are much higher than we expected but more of a reason to pre-plan so the burden is not on the ones left.

We were impressed. We let it sit for a few months and, recently, put down a deposit and signed up for a monthly payment plan. What stands out in any and all of the interactions which we've had with Recompose staff is the care, consideration and genuine kindness which they have shown us. Their responses to our questions and requests come in almost as quickly as we push 'send' on an email, and they are comprehensive and caring at the same time. They were very kind, very…read morecompassionate, very practical, and didn't feel greedy or like they were trying to upcharge us--unlike when my dad died and the traditional mortuary guy hated me because I said Dad didn't want an expensive urn (he was a Utah boy who hated fancy things--we ended up getting a lovely wooden urn from Amazon for like $40 instead of the ugly multi-hundred dollar one they were pushing). Recompose was so meaningful and stood in stark contrast to traditional, money-hungry offerings. They played music my mom had very carefully chosen as they put her body in, and that was really important to me because I wanted it to be as much like her wishes as possible. With Recompose, we know how fantastic they were with Mom, and it puts us at ease knowing our deaths are going to be handled ethically and kindly and responsibly by leaders in the movement for better death services. For myself and my partner, we also love the idea of the "Cedar Room," which is a special room where loved ones can interact with the body in an unstructured way before the process starts. There's also the option of a more traditional service room. Either way, you get the ability for people to put things like flowers in with the body, which again is very important to us. I combed through their website and offerings because thoughtfully planning my death is very comforting to me. I want to know what's going to happen. --- Here's the longer story: My partner and I chose Recompose because we wanted: 1) the things we love about a traditional Jewish, pinebox, straight into the ground with no embalming burial, 2) the ecofriendliness of a cemetery managed by a green company, because we don't want our bodies harming the Earth, 3) our remains to be returned to the Earth, which you cannot get with cremation, because even if you bury the cremains, the nutrients are all gone, 4) the ability for some of our remains to be distributed among friends and family, which is what we love about cremation, 5) we couldn't afford the traditional burial which is crazy expensive nowadays, 6) we wanted our bodies to go to actual use for the world, and Recompose lets you donate your remains to land trusts. Our family has 3 preneeds set up with Recompose so we are all set when we die and we know other people won't have to worry about it. My mom always hated cremation (she hated the idea of burning) and hated burial (she hated the idea of being deep underground). She really wanted her body to be able to be used for something and so she wanted her body to be donated to science (and it was a hard decision for her as she hated the fact that it would be cremated when they were done, but it was more important to her that her body be of use). Unfortunately there are actually a lot of steps that need to be taken before death to be donated to science, which my mom did not understand. After she died, we decided to go with Recompose for her too because her main wish was that her body not be wasted. It went towards healing land in Washington which is as close as we were legally allowed to get to keeping her wishes. My sister is going to go visit the land trust where hers went. Also, as I mentioned, she had her memorial service planned very carefully and we had Recompose play the song she said was most important and then we held a separate larger memorial service like she requested in her town. Mom had also said that if the "science place" returned us her ashes, we could scatter them at a state beach with my dad. There was no "science place" but we were able to take a small amount of her compost and scatter it there with my Dad's ashes to honor that wish as well.
