This center just got, in the last year, a multi million dollar upgrade and they still have some of the worst locker rooms and showers. The locker rooms are dirty, the lockers are very small and often the mechanisms don't work. Also, their showers are either scalding hot or freezing cold. They seem incapable of keeping their spa running not to mention it is so heavily chlorinated that sometimes it is difficult to breath. It is a shame because the stetting is beautiful and it could be a wonderful place if they had competent management and planning. read more

From the fantastic photo collage in the back hallway, Mt. Scott appears to have been providing the essence of community spirit for the Mt. Scott/Arleta neighborhood since at least the 1970s. Fees are low, classes are taught by neighbors, and activities are abundant. If I were a parent, I could see myself as a regular here. I was home-schooled in a small city where a place like this would have been so handy. But it's great for grown-ups, too: there's the gym, yoga and dance classes, the pool complex in all its splendor, and several rooms (including an auditorium) you can reserve for meetings & events. Not to mention: it's attached to a lovely park with a good practice field for kickball & bbq lovers like myself during the spring & summer. Two years ago, I had a private roller skating party in the "secret" downstairs skating rink for my 29th birthday. Our family loves the Mt. Scott Community Center! We've done tae kwon do lessons, archery lessons, drop-in toddler play, roller skating, swim lessons and open swim. There are also gyms for basketball and other sports, day camps, and a host of other classes and activities. The indoor pool is definitely a highlight - in addition to lanes, there's a water slide, river and whirlpool with currents. Sometimes they put out a rope for swinging out over the water Tarzan-style and dropping in. Kids' swim lessons are typically taught by teenagers, and they offered free lessons during Spring Break this year while they trained instructors. Family changing rooms are a nice option for our 2 boy/1 girl family. The skate rink downstairs is small and simple, but serviceable. They have skates for rent and socks to buy if you forget yours. The rink is also one of several spaces you can rent if you're throwing a party or other event. Our family qualifies for a discounted membership, so be sure to ask in case you're eligible! Raddest pool in the Portland Parks & Rec collection. No question. I have taken aerobics in the shallow end and in the deep end. I'm terrible at it. And I love it. I have braved the "Channel Walk/Run" option, and I have no clue how anyone would be able to actually run through that water. It's like walking up hill against Niagara Falls. At least, that's what it seems like to me post-knee-replacement. Once I have thoroughly exhausted myself walking laps in the channel, and exhaustion happens quickly (maybe 15 to 20 minutes), I reward myself with a soak in the giant hot tub. Yeah - this pool has it all. Plus it's clean. I'm holding out that fifth star because of the absolutely abysmal showers that force you to keep hitting the button to request additional water. I feel like a monkey in a scientific experiment at first asking politely, and eventually demanding more water for Christ's sake. Shampoo running down my face, eyes closed, desperately flailing around in the dark to feel for the damned button. Hmmm, come to think of it, maybe I now have a glimpse of what it's like to be a teenage boy? It's the worst shower ever. But the pool is worth the eventual shower fail. read more

I love this community center. I live only a couple of blocks away and am usually here at least once a week. They host the neighborhood association meetings and other events here and have always been very gracious and accommodating for the board. The pool is almost always packed and why wouldn't it be? It's a great indoor pool with a waterslide and everything. Plus there's a small but well laid out fitness room, a roller rink in the basement and more activities for all ages than you could possible ever have time for. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. I've hosted several events here and even on particularly insane days when every room is booked with a party, some how the staff manage to stretch themselves thin enough to be everywhere at once. read more

Managed and operated by Portland Parks and Recreation, Mount Scott Community Center, located in Mount Scott Park on 72nd, is a cheap mega-center of fun and recreation. Because it's run by the city, they only charge a nominal fee of a couple bucks for admission. The biggest attraction is the pool, which far surpasses the usual lap pool; here, you'll also find a hot tub, a kiddie "fun" pool, a WATERSLIDE, and a whirlpool. Come early or late to avoid masses of children. Holy fabulousness!! I was on kid patrol for a weekend entertaining my little cousins. Seeing that I'm the cool older cousin I had to pull out all the stops and give them what their little hearts desired. We were suppose to check out the water slide and swimming pool but that didn't happen as planned. We ended up at the skating ring instead. I dunno about my cousins, one of the them fell pretty hard. I was having a marvelous time at the skating rink. totally brought back old memories of me being a kid. Our kids have been taking swimming lessons here and are having a great time. They are ready to teach dad how to swim now. hehehe But........ a few of my observations. So I am breaking out my list. The Good: The instructors are fantastic. They are friendy, take good care of the kids and are available for questions frome parents. The place is as clean as a community center like this can be. There are vending machines with mostly healthy options. The Bad: Said vending machines take ONLY EXACT change....uuuggggggg..........and are at times down to just a few items as if hords of starving children fell apon them. The Ugly: Bigger boys are often in the ladies dressing room. It is posted that small boys are allowed and there are three large family rooms to accomidate them. On one occasion a woman and her sone came in to play on their tablet and he was at least 8 and all EYES. Hmmmmm I took my girls and went to the other side of the room. Geez read more

Wow. I'm so conflicted. I love this place, the pool is great, the gym is ok, we used to go twice a week with our 3 year old. Now we can't though, because they have changed their scheduling so that it is literally impossible to take a toddler in the week. I came at the worst time possible. All ages group pool. Nooo!!! Frankly, it wasn't a big deal. My son absolutely loved this place! Next time we're going to a class so it won't be so crowded. It was really, really, crowded. It's inexpensive, clean, the showers are hard to use, and lot's of kids but you can lock up your stuff and all is well. There's a place close by the pool to store towels and shoes, and you don't have to worry about anyone swiping them up by "mistake". I have yet to go there to work out, but I will for sure. This place is a great place to go, and I especially look forward to coming back again. read more

Located right off 72nd and Foster tucked away into the neighborhood you'll find a quaint little place for everyone ranging from toddlers to the elderly looking for activities everyone can enjoy. The Mt. Scott. CC has been on of my favorite places to visit year round. They have all the amenities that you could ever ask for They have basketball gyms, hot tub, lap swim, play swim, they teach toddlers to adults how to swim, a small water park, whirlpool, a decently sized gym, and they also have a huge open room that you could take advantage of if need be. This review is mainly for the pool even though I do take advantage of the other things that you can do here. The pool is great for kids of all ages to even adults (my mom learned to swim here!) Do take advantage of the free week that is offered to people for free lessons! If you do miss out the fees here aren't ridiculously high either if you live in the community! I've been going to this place ever since they had the outdoor pool which has became a parking lot. (I've missed it a lot in the summer but hey there is the outdoor Creston pool that isn't too far away!) Everyone should get a year membership if you live close by! read more

I've only visited Mt. Scott Community Center for the roller skating rink. That being said, the rest of the place looks amazing. The rink is completely awesome. Located in the basement under the gym is can be load from the bouncing basketballs, but not bad. It's usually not busy at all, 5-25 people. The music is just from the radio, but the guy who runs it is usually open to changing stations, The floor is very nice but slick, mainly from the dust that is on it. But fortunately I prefer the floor top be slick for my style of skating. Very friendly staff, good prices, and they let you wear your headphones(UNLIKE THE SKATE NAZIS AT OAKS PARK!). I just wish they had more open skate sessions. Definitely worth the drive from Salem. read more

I've been coming here to work out since January. While the exercise room is small, I can always get on the cardio machine of my choice, and there are enough weight machines that I leave feeling like I got a decent workout. There is not much room for free weights or floor exercises, though. I love, love, love the pool. It is sparkling clean and always the right temperature. The current channel is a great workout! It doesn't have the luxuries of a big gym (most notably the showers- good for a quick rinse, but that's all). Of course, it's cheaper than a big gym too. read more

I use the community center primarily for the gym, and it's adequate for what I use it for. It's fairly easy to find an elliptical or bike machine open. If you're going for free weights, you might need to spend a bit more money for a larger gym. But alas, the membership for the Community Center is so cheap, there's not much room to complain. I've found the staff to be conisistently friendly, and genuinely enjoy their jobs. Although I've never used the pool, it looks like a youngsters dream in there with the slide and the current pool. OMG! Really? I took Belly Dance classes at this center last summer! I am hoping to take Belly Dancing and Zumbo classes this summer! 5 classes cost $35, so it is acceptable! I was really pleased with this facility. We went for a water Zumba class and had an absolute great time. All of the staff were so friendly. I noticed two different pools and one with a water slide, a good sized hot tub, indoor basket ball court, well stalked weight/cardio room and I don't think I saw it all. I did notice also online the mention of rollar skating somewhere as well, so can't wait for that! ha! Very peaceful setting under the trees and can't wait to return. read more

My favorite aquatic center....Ever! My kids and I come here several times a month in the winter. The toddler pool has a nice transition from kiddie pool to little kid pool. I taught my 3 y/o how to swim between the two sides of the pool. The waterslide is nice since they allow short kids to ride it. No other aquatic center will allow shorties to slide! read more

I love taking my 1yr old to the really shallow side so she can walk herself into the pool. The lap pool is great, as well as the morning pool aerobics. The fitness center is great too. Worst pool in Portland. First time here ( normally frequent Montavilla, SE community pool & Dishman). Staff is rude and busy talking amongst themselves. Lifeguards don't reinforce any rules - too young & immature. People Don't wear proper suits. I haven't seen so many clothes in a pool. It just is flat out ghetto. read more

This place is a little slice of real-deal Portlandia right in your SE PDX backyard. Our 4 year old son was part of the swim program over the summer. The instructors were AWESOME and he enjoyed splashing around with other kids from the area...a great time was had by all, and he learned a lot to boot! In addition to swimming, they also offer great summer programs for kids from soccer to dance and art...even Karate, although we decided to wait a year or two on that. The community center offers a wide variety of drop in classes for adults and seniors. The facility is spacious and clean. Our little one takes her swim lessons here-- at her young age, it is more like getting her used to the pool and acclimated to the water-- and we have enjoyed it very much so far. The lessons are very reasonable, about $4-5 a lesson for a 8-lesson series. How cool is the yellow slide?? I wish I had something like that growing up. The swim teacher is friendly and accommodating and our little girl has gone from frowning at the first lesson to splashing around at her most recent swim day. I go here to use the pool(swimming for a workout, not playing, hot tubbing, etc). This place is good. Open swim is nice, couple lanes, everything you need is there. Locker rooms with space to change, showers, bathrooms, etc. When I first came, I got a parks & recs card and just loaded it up with my 10 punches that I paid for, so each time I just scan it and go swim. Pretty convenient. I used the schedule on the site and it has been working fine. All around, I plan on repeating this routine. I have not used anything besides the pool & locker rooms yet, so can't speak for anything else. read more

The pool on the outside looks amazing. It has a two pool areas and a hot tub. However, the air is almost impossible to breath due to lack of ventilation and high amounts of chlorine. Also the flooring in the children pool area is abrasive and can and has cut childrens feet. For these two reasons alone I will drive across town to swim elsewhere. read more

Mt. Scott does me right. I don't mean in a carnal way. For my workout needs, it has what I want with a minimum of fuss. I usually go here 5 times a week to work it out. IT. OUT. The workout room has 8 or so treadmills, 6 elliptical trainers, stairsteppers, stationary bikes (recumbent and, you know...normal), a dozen or so nautilus-style machines, free weights, bench press, leg press, etc. You get a whole range of people coming here so it is not like there's some kind of scene going on. Come as you are. Saturdays, I play badminton in the gymnasium. I am The Eradicator of badminton. Well, my mind has that impression that I am. My game may beg to differ. But it won't unless it wants a SMACK. (Hear that, game? Thought so) Anyway, there are two courts lined for badminton and an unlined practice court between them. The lighting is good, which is important. Like the workout room, players of all abilities come and get they bird on. This beat is democratic. The pool looks amazing and is quite popular. It could be for the latter reason that I have never used it. It is invariably packed with kids and parents. I'm not big on swimming so I give it a miss. You can see that it is practically an indoor waterpark, though. The staff is great. I dropped my wallet in the workout room once and they called me about it not long afterward. Everything was tickety boo; nothing was missing. They are also very helpful at the counter, especially when it comes to renewing memberships or answering questions. There are rooms that can be rented for parties, weddings, etc. You can even rent the pool and the full-size skating rink in the basement. I don't know how many times I've come to pump iron that there has been a wedding reception going on. I feel bad they have to see me in my workout clothes but it's not the Hilton. I try to avoid flinging sweat on them on the way out. Try. The only thing that keep me from giving 5 stars is that the priority seems to be on the swimming pool. It is as though whatever the pool wants, the pool gets, at the expense of other areas. I can understand this in that the pool is the big draw for the facility. It seems like some more of the funds could go to the workout equipment, however. All of the ellipitical trainers (which is my preferred cardio) have issues and when they full on break, it can be weeks before they get fixed. They also are just old to begin with. All of the treadmills were replaced in the last upgrade but not a single new elliptical. I'm holding out hope that the next go round will see these get a refresh. Another minor item is that I wish there were a way to segregate pool usage from the workout room. I know the lion's share of my annual pass goes to the pool, and yet I never use it. It's a minor gripe, however, as it still only costs about $45 a month for my wife and I to go as often as we want. I've been to other community centers in Portland, and while some are newer or fancier, the convenience and ease of use at Mt. Scott keeps me signing back up. A true community center. read more
