People don't understand that "Rector" street, means there is a rectory right above you. We can't do better with tiles and benches to tell a story for the public that they might enjoy?

Multiple working escalators here but no elevator. There is usually a food cart next to the entrance where you can score a bottle of water for a dollar. A new deli market recently opened next to it. Also, at this entranceway this is no MTA booth here being manned and usually no staff guarding the turnstiles. I've viewed many people not paying and hopping over or crawling under the turnstiles over the years.

There's also a Public Space area. The food carts are still doing a good business on this side of the street too. When I was there today people were waiting in line at my favorite vendor. Originally consisting of three separate stations, the South Ferry/Whitehall Street complex is the…read moremain gateway to Battery Park and the Staten Island Ferry port, located in the south end of Manhattan. It services mainly the 1, R, W lines. My wife and I used this complex to visit Battery Park, from where we took a ferry to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty up close. The NYC subway system originally operated as three separate, competing companies [IRT - Interborough Rapid Transit; BMT - Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit; IND - Independent Subway System] before unifying in 1940. Numbered trains represent former IRT lines, whereas lettered trains represent former BMT and IND trains. In 1905, IRT opened a balloon loop (track that allows a train to reverse direction without stopping) at South Ferry, then opened another loop in 1918. The BMT opened its station at Whitehall the same year. Much of the South Ferry station was heavily damaged as part of the 9/11 attack. A new station was built (same name of South Ferry), opening in 2009, replacing the original South Ferry station. The new station suffered heavy damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012, closing indefinitely for repair. During this time, the old South Ferry station was reopened to support transportation needs. After major renovation, the new station reopened in 2017 (and the old station closed again), all servicing the 1 Line. It consists of 1 island platform with 2 tracks, and is the station we used to leave Battery Park, heading back to midtown. As for the Whitehall station of the complex, even though it suffered damage from both 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, it remained open, and continued to be serviced by the R and W lines. It consists of two island platforms with 3 tracks. This is the station we took getting to Battery Park, and we couldn't find a way to get to the South Ferry station exit (since it was closer to the park), instead having to exit street level at Whitehall and walking the rest of the way.

Benefitting from all the repairs and renovations delivered in 2017 after being impacted in 2013 by…read moreHurricane Sandy, this South Ferry/Whitehall St. Subway Station accessing the 1, R and W trains provides an almost perfect connection to the battery or Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Almost, because there are no elevators to the R, W Broadway Line train platform from the mezzanine, creating a challenge for people with strollers, carriages, or wheelchairs. Given how much money MTA spent, it's not clear why they didn't resolve this. That being said, the station provides reminders to how much this part of Manhattan has evolved over time, including the shifts in waterfront structure and activity where the land meets the convergence of the two rivers and New York Bay. At the foot of the South Ferry approach escalator, you'll notice large stones embedded in the wall. These historic pieces, discovered at this level about 500 feet away, composed the west face of Colonial-era Battery Wall. On the other side of the Mezzanine turnstiles and beyond the artist-designed laser-cut stainless steel piece separating the paid section, you'll find the remaining 2008 mosaic and glass artwork series entitled "See it split, see it change" by Doug and Mike Starn, identical twin collaborative artists. The different pieces use images to address transformation, including that which Manhattan has undergone. For example, one section along the stairs to the 1 train platform includes a mosaic with a map superimposed over the island's original topography. It's worth pausing to check out the Battery Wall and public art when passing through this South Ferry/Whitehall St. Subway Station.

I have taken it so many times over the years and today I used it again to head to Brooklyn. The trains come often and it is one of those stations where you never feel like you are waiting forever. I like that it has elevators, escalators, and stairs because it makes getting around simple no matter what you need. The station feels safe every time I am there. There are always people around, from commuters to families to tourists passing through. The area is full of visitors because there are so many NYC attractions nearby, so it never feels empty or isolated. The neighborhood around it is lively with Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty ferries, the Charging Bull, and the whole Financial District right there. It is clean, bright, and easy to navigate, and it has become one of the stations I rely on the most when I am moving around the city.

It is only a few blocks away from the Hilton Double Tree Hotel that I was staying at. It first opened in 1905 as part of the IRT subway line. In the 1970s the station had a major overhaul for doubling the subway station capacity with new routes and in 2020 Bowling Green became a test site for MTA's first hearing induction loop on a subway platform! The station features rotating display of photographic artwork! It showcases rarely seen views of the MTA bridges through illuminated lightboxes in the mezzanine. There are a variety of routes that runs through the MTA - Bowling Green Subway Station 4 Train - runs all times, stopping at Bowling Green on its way between the Bronx and Brooklyn 5 Train - Runs all times except late nights. On certain late nights, the 5 does not serve Bowling Green, where the services ends at the Brooklyn Bridge City Hall This is a great station, and it's right next to the Staten Island Ferry!

Opened in 1904 as one of the city's original 28 subway stations, you'll find at various points architectural details retained in the walls, including several beautiful elaborate station names on the platform, now framed with gold tiles. Unfortunately, only the Downtown trains are have improved accessibility, and the MTA does not have in any immediate plans for an accessibility upgrade for the Uptown service to make it ADA compliant. Nevertheless, in 2018 MTA installed exquisite giant glass mosaic murals called "Roaming Underfoot" by Brooklyn-based Nancy Blum. These beautiful enlarged floral pieces, a nod to perennials found at the nearby Madison Square Park, dominate the sections of the wall they occupy. This station is definitely worth checking out!

Located in MidTown Manhattan, Times Square, Garment District, also Hell's Kitchen is nearby. This MTA station serves several Subway trains including the A, C & E lines which I trequently use. You'll find stairs all through the area which will bring you downstairs to the lower level. I've mostly seen newsstands and ATM's throughout the station. Be careful of panhandler's and always watch your back. I frequently see NYPD on patrol, during major political events I've also seen US Military personnel, but you can't always rely on their presence or the use of CCTV. Download the OMNY app, use Apple Pay or you can always use and reload your Metro card using the self-serve kiosks. Be smart and travel safe.

Now, the station services the 2 and 5 trains, where the lines further going into The Bronx split to either head to Dyre Avenue or Wakefield-241st Street. Its street level provides opportunity to change platforms and it's also ADA compliant, which is great because this station is one of the closest to The Bronx Zoo! You'll see wonderful glass and stone mosaics as well as laminated windows with multidisciplinary artist Luisa Caldwell's elegant 2011 artwork "Station Villa" throughout this lower level. These decorative pieces perfect for the building architecture, include various floral designs and are worth checking out!
