There are two entrances directly across the street from one another. Both requiring climbing a semi-steep staircase, followed by another smaller staircase once you swipe through the turnstile. Once you get up the stairs, there's a mostly-functional Metrocard machine and an MTA employee in the booth. Pretty average in terms of cleanliness/maintenance for a subway station... Not awful, not great. There's almost always someone sleeping on the benches right after you swipe through. About half the time there's someone asking for a swipe. If I've got an unlimited, I oblige. Police officers can be found on the platform, at the booth, or right outside the staircase 7 times out of 10. They're often ticketing someone for fare evasion or "randomly" checking bags. The platforms are above ground and outdoors, which is unpleasant in case of inclement weather, but great in terms of cell reception and 4G use, which you'll need since there's no WiFi at this station. There's been a fair amount of crime in the area in the time that I've been commuting there, but I've never had a problem here or felt particularly unsafe. There are always people on the platform, which is good because it doesn't get isolated and sketchy. There are a lot of students and families commuting during school/work hours, which is nice.

It looks like a rave, but it's just your friendly neighborhood subway station.

I'm usually so thankful that this subway stop exists. Just don't fall asleep after a big night!

Why does the train ALWAYS wait here for a few minutes? Seriously, can someone tell me, it's really annoying, especially if you're standing.

Imagine how many people have ridden on the L Line as one of the first segments of the underground Canarsie Line over the past 100 years. Amazing! No Less Than Everything Comes Together. Going back and forth from Williamsburg to Prospect Heights meant a lot of trips from this station through Manhattan. I don't think I'll ever understand why there still isn't a way to get from Brooklyn to Brooklyn without going through Manhattan. Yet, it allowed me to discover a series of beautiful mosaics by Marcel Dzama. The Sun. The Moon. The Sky. All connected in No Less Than Everything Comes Together by Marcel Dzama. The mosaics are so interesting and detailed. Dzama cites that he was influenced by the great Dada movement artist, Marcel Duchamp, but the mosaics remind me more of the Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi. Either way, the mosaics are so fun and playful. Take a few minutes on your vacation or your daily commute to enjoy the whimsical dancers, the sun, the moon and a few historical characters that all play a part in the mosaics in the underground Bedford Avenue Subway.
