Interesting that the trains and the MTA are not connected…read more After exploring the New York Botanic Garden in the Bronx I needed to head back to Brooklyn with my hubby and our daughter to meet my nephew for dinner. This was so much faster than a twenty minute walk to another station in the Bronx. Fortunately my daughter has the train app, so she bought three tickets for about $5 a pop and after a short wait, we were on our way. Once we got to Union Square we exited, paid for the MTA and once again, we were on our way. Thinking about fare evasion? Don't do it! The fine for not paying for your ticket could be a whopping $100!!! And if you think that you can just sneak in on the train. Think twice. There was a train conductor that was checking if each passenger had a ticket. IYKYK.

Took the Metro North train to the Botanical Garden for the 1st time and it saved sooo much time…read morethan! Highly recommend over taking the crowded MTA trains and buses or even driving and paying for parking. The train leaves you right across the street the Botanical Garden entrance (Mosholu entrance). Check the train schedule... easy 20 minute ride from Grand Central Station. So convenient that I have learned my lesson and know that I know where the station is and the train schedule, will take the Metro North going to/from Botanical Garden going forward. Station itself wasn't crowded and platform has directions to inform which way trains are headed. Kiosks machines are there to buy your tickets.... The boards inform you when the trains are coming and if delayed... Tip: Get the MTA TrainTime app and purchase tix via mobile... kiosks don't always work and more expensive paying on the train. Just remember to activate ticket before boarding as there is a time limit... Don't stand near the edge of the platform and esp turn away when express trains go by... that whosh of air! Heading back to NY, the Metro North track 4 is where you want to be. Take the overpass bridge to the other side of the tracks.

To this end, the MetroNorth is my saving grace. It's a quick, smooth, creep-free ride and for $5... it's worth it. 24 minutes to Midtown or and hour on the subway. Easy choice. So from now on if I hit the trifecta, I need to go into the city, got a sweet parking spot, and it's after 1 in the afternoon...I'll go the 2 bus stops to MetroNorth and navigate my way from Grand Central. Saves me so much time.

Average Metro North Train Station…read more Been using this location for my Metro North (Harlem Line) use since the late 80's. Not too much has changed other than some cosmetic differences on the platform. The best modification was the digital board they added with the schedule (Grand Central bound side only) - relying on the garbled speakers always sucked. At least the train fare went to something decent.....because it doesn't go to the actual rail service or their schedules. Inside is drab and blah. Sometimes it smells, sometimes it doesn't. I never bothered with the store/eatery inside or any of the overpriced vending machines. They have 2 ticket machines inside, but probably need 2 more since the IQ challenged sometimes tend to take a much longer time to operate the simple machine. There is a booth inside with an agent sometimes, but for anyone in the early morning or evening would be out of luck. There is some slight parking about a block from station, but the area isn't an area I'd want to leave a car at night. At night, sometimes shady characters can be inside or outside the station. During any time here, there are also some strange people.....but that's everywhere. There's one thin stairwell (one stairwell for each side) for exiting passengers and depending on how crowded the train is, it could be a few minutes before you can exit. There is a cab stand across the street and the cab drivers will be on top of most exiting train riders, but I guess it's their job. There's not much room for cars to wait for people they're picking up. There is the 7 bus across the street for the station - but much like the Metro North itself, the bus can be late at times. There are much better stations and much worse stations, but this isn't too bad.

Sometimes there's leftover newspapers on the seats and ground. The shelter is partially open air so bundle up during the colder months. The surrounding area is bustling, with lots of restaurants and Rite Aid across the street. There's also a decent bar next door. Parking is okay, free overnights and weekends. There is permit parking during the day (not run by NJ Transit) that's $120 every quarter.

It was freezing, or maybe it was warm, maybe it was my cold, but it felt cold as hell anyway because who the hell wants to be awake when the sun isn't even trying yet? ​So I walk all the way over to Lexington Ave and 42nd Street which is a hell of a walk when you're half asleep and your feet feel like two sacks of wet sand, just to get to Grand Central and catch the 6:18 AM train to Scarsdale. I have this part-time paralegal job up there. It depresses the hell out of me, strictly speaking, but a person's got to keep a job or people start looking at you like you're a total crook or crackhead or something. ​Grand Central at six in the morning is actually pretty grand, if you want to know the truth. It really is. It's not full of all these phony tourists snapping pictures of every single thing like they've never seen a ceiling before. The main concourse is just vast and quiet, with that big greenish ceiling with all the stars painted on it, even though the stars are drawn totally backward, which is just like people, if you think about it. Nobody even notices. ​There's that big clock right in the middle sitting on top of the information booth. It just sits there, looking very old and very expensive and not giving a damn about anybody's problems. I stood there for a second looking up at it, and for a minute it almost made me feel less miserable about going all the way to Scarsdale to look at legal briefs or whatever the hell I was going to do. ​The guys working the tracks at that hour don't yell at you, which is a nice change. You just walk down the ramp to your track, get on the Metro-North, and sit by the window. It's almost nice, except you know as soon as the train starts moving that you're actually on your way to work, which ruins the whole thing. ​If you have to go to work at six in the morning, Grand Central is about the only place in New York that doesn't make you feel like a complete loser for doing it. I mean it. It really doesn't. ​

So very convenient as a mode of transportation. The train conductors were nice as they were going around checking tickets - and this made a big difference. Dealing with folks who are pleasant certainly makes a world of difference. We enjoyed the train ride to and from downtown NY. Note, there were more people on the train as we headed back around 4:00, but still enough seats for everyone to sit. Note, be sure to have your ticket available to be checked once the train moves!
