I have auditioned for a startling number of TV shows, probably because I possess an inherent lack of talent and judgment. When I was 20, I was living in LA (passively trying to become a screenwriter) and searching MTV.com for inspiration, when.... BAM! I saw a casting call for girls who wanted to be hypnotized and have their sexual history questioned on MTV. I mean, who WOULDN'T want to answer degrading questions about their innermost secrets on national television? Like an attentionwhore to her spotlight, I dialed the number, the casting guy liked me, and an appointment was booked the next day, with validated parking (cha-ching!), at the MTV Studios in Santa Monica. I ditched class (screenwriting requires effort, but being a famous hypnotized person is easy) and cruised my super chic Toyota to the land of Range Rovers and Mercedes. I had arrived. After a few questions with beefy security guards and not-so-subtle sideways glances trying to spot some Real World/Road Rules heroes, I was lead into a room with a prepubescent casting director, his douchey sidekick, and a hypnotist who promised to make me do dirty things for money on MTV. Who WOULDN'T turn this down, right? Fast forward an hour. I'm sitting in a room with cameras and bright lights, and the hypnotist is probing me with Kinsey-type inappropriate questions while telling me to pet an invisible puppy he says is curled up in my lap. "How did you lose your virginity?" and "At what age did you first touch yourself?" are crowd-pleasers. At some point, I realize there IS no puppy and I don't feel comfortable answering these dirty questions, because I plan on one day having a political career or at the very least a well-respected line of skincare products. So I stood and I left. What was once groundbreaking and must watch viewing for music fans became a bad joke with nothing but horrible reality shows repeated over and over. All music disappeared, no more fun videos, and somehow they still do the MTV Music Video awards (why bother?) I remember sitting on our couch waiting for the station to come on the air. It was so exciting, even though The Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star" was a horrible song as it was first to come on. But the 80's and 90's had awesome music videos, fun shows, and terrific VJ's. MTV was once a force and changed TV culture. It was surely innovative. Now, it's a dead carcass of something which was once great and just programs poor reality TV shows. Headbangers Ball. Considering MTV hasn't played a music video in twenty five years, it's amazing to me that they have the cash to put on the ridiculously anachronistic MTV Music Video awards. What are they celebrating? And, who has even seen any of the videos "nominated?" Sure, Taylor Swift showed up while her private jet was down for repairs but again, why? MTV as a cultural force has been an exercise in necrophilia for decades. They might as well give a statue to Milli Vanilli just for grins. Zero stars. read more

MTV launched August of 1981. I started watching immediately since my father had cable TV. Back at that time there were lots of late night concerts and shows that took me behind the scenes of my favorite bands. I could see concerts and lots of my favorite artists videos. Before I knew it my daughter who was six years old at the time was watching along with me. We started going to concerts after learning about the latest groups while watching MTV videos. Flash forward to the MTV currently on my cable that stinks. When I see the commercials about shows that are all drama in relationships I don't bother tuning in to MTV. Recently I was surprised because I heard them talking about videos for the 2024 VMA awards. I didn't know they played videos anymore. What really ticked me off was the fact that they had the nerve to air the show on Wednesday September 11th! Who is the genius in charge of this network? How insensitive to have a celebration with music stars of this magnitude enjoying themselves on this day of remembrance. If I could give Zero Stars I would. read more

How sad that something SO innovative in the eighties for rock music... has fallen in the hands of kids thrashing about in the water of the Titanic as the mighty ship goes under. This is how Rome fell. Not in a day, but virally from within by gradual corruption and degradation. There is a good show or two on this network... but the grasp for money and pandering anything that might draw eyeballs from any group of demographics... is painfully obvious to any thinking being. OK... ONE shining star on this whole network... the child of Yaniv Shulman... is Catfish. This show actually deserves a better network... something with other comparable shows with unique and interesting twists. Don't let em take down Catfish with this mess... get into the lifeboat Niv... and onto a stable network. The commercials are a clue as to quality... three men seated at a picnic table "lookin at their prostates" or something like that said. It was badly garbled. And the same commercials show every hour multiple times. Which works if your audience attention span is one half hour a day or less. What they need is a CEO... a genius with a leading vision. They need a savior on the level of a Walt Disney. Someone to set the bar and draw up some ideas for TV people want to watch. But, I don't see it happnin'. Because this network is not run by geniuses... and NBCUniversal is in real trouble across the board. There are no real creative minds there... just bean counters and "flying monkeys"... that is workers who do anything the king or queen ask. Sigh. One new direction might be back to their roots. Think of shows concentrating on music artists... people who play instruments... who have existing careers who want to show people the inside of the business day to day. I always thought that rock and roll long haired musicians were fascinating. Unfortunately, half of them are already dead... Perhaps they could have a show with retired / older music superstars featured and showing people what life is like after the tours end... or in their family life and retirement period. You know... take us around the world with you kind of thing. I loved the show with Ozzy Osbourne and his family at home and the Kiss guy... Gene Simmons... those were very interesting. read more

Music Television (MTV) just ain't what used to be. Might as well change the name to "Reality Television" (RTV) or "Drama Television" (DTV). Every time I even attempt to watch that, I turn it on and it's always commercial!!! I just checked, damn commercial!!! Screw you MTV. read more
