Today, I did the watercolor activity and was handed a folder with multiple sized paper and some watercolor paint. I started painting right away. The workers are around to refill the paint/brushes/supplies when you're running low. I felt extremely attended to and I had such a good experience. I think that in the future, I might do the air dry clay activity as drawing/painting is not really my forte.

The placement of the instructor's seat made it challenging for everyone to see her demonstrations clearly. I would recommend building a small raised platform or stage for the instructor to sit on so all participants can easily follow along. This took away from the experience. As a beginner, I also felt I didn't receive enough one-on-one guidance. It may be helpful in the future to have either two instructors or an assistant available to support participants who may need additional help. While I appreciated the generous access to clay during the session, I was disappointed that glazing more than one item came with an additional charge -- especially considering the class is already quite expensive. Allowing participants to glaze at least two pieces would add significant value to the experience. Lastly, I noticed that 30 minutes of the private lesson was dedicated to cleanup. He showed us again while we were working on it since most of us were first timers and gave us some tips. They also have a menu so you can order drinks to enjoy (although this is really for before and after since your hands will be covered in clay during the lesson). After finishing the session, we cleaned up our stations and tools, and then got to pick the glaze for our pieces. My piece hasn't been fired yet but I can update after!

This is my honest review after attending COUPLES Night at Mugi Pottery…read more First, the studio was tall, well lit, ventilated, and we were greeted kindly by the 2 instructors. They checked our COVID vaccination card; process was smooth and seamless. For couples night, we each were given a large slab of clay, 2 rolling pins, and tools for only 1 person. There is NO wheel spinning and the clay comes out of the wash so you stay relatively clean (minus hands). I suggest you come with tight fitting clothing, hair up for long haired students, and sleeveless top so you can really get into the clay freely. I especially enjoyed that way the class was taught: it was done with several small demonstrations; after each demo we were released to do what was demonstrated, and came back together for the next demo. All the while the instructors were visiting each couple to help answer questions a give advice. I love this way so those who pick up the demo quick (me) can just go at it, while the slower people can get the extra help without bogging down the whole class. The entire class went for a little over 2hrs so there is certainly a time constraint. Overall, the experience was AMAZING! A wonderful way the spend the evening with a loved one. Since we typically like working with our hands and have done similar experiences before- we knew how work together and help each other out. So it's important to understand your partner's strengths and weaknesses so you'll have a happy time guiding and giving affirmation with the creations. I noticed several couple getting annoyed with each other and giving a "do whatever the f' you want" response- lol. PRO TIP: come in with something already conceptualized so you can go right to it. The slab was first roll to make a cylinder, and the creativity goes from there. Size, shape, and what you want to do will help save time towards your finished product (I came home afterwards only coming up with more I could have done to my creation!). Some made stemless mugs, jewelry box with a lid, luminary candle holders, jugs- so much you can do from the starting cylinder shape. Go on YouTube to get the technique in your head, check out Pinterest or print photos/ designs ahead of time- all of which would have helped me on my final project. Only thing I would have loved to see: since it was couples night- maybe some cut roses, maybe some wine, more tools, but overall- I HIGHLY recommend.

Once there, the staff was responsive and helpful. The glass-work itself, after basic instructions, is fairly self-driven - so great for older kids and adults. I've done glass fusing in the past and loved it, so I decided to finally visit and take a class that focused on making either a Charcuterie board or coaster set. I took the class as part of my birthday weekend on 2/10. It is usually $124 however, I received 30% due to an advertised deal on their site (code sp30). I traveled by train from the Bronx to get here and was very excited however, my experience wasn't as exciting as I anticipated. Unfortunately when I arrived, I got lost. I walked back and forth trying to find the space and even asked around, but no one had heard of it. I looked online trying to find a phone number and to my luck, there is none. After walking around for 15 minutes, I finally found it. The door/entrance has a small sign with their name on it. Maybe it's just me, but they need a better indicator. The business is located on the upper level of what seems to be an executive park of some sort. Meaning, one building with multiple businesses inside or around the premises. The building itself looks like its under heavy construction. I would never have imagined that any sort of classes were being conducted there. Nonetheless, I made it just in time as the instructor, Dorie, seemed to have just began. She gave a great overview of glass fusing techniques and offered tips on making our piece as great as possible. Her directions were also very clear and concise. Once she was done, we were directed to begin our masterpieces. There were 12 students including myself. We were placed at a large table where all of the materials were laid out for us. Each person had a section or workstation at the table to work from. In addition to the wonderful layout, we were offered some delicious bites of charcuterie treats, wine, and water. I took an apron and got to work. The entire class was about 3 hours. We were offered a sheet of paper to sketch out our design. I did not like this nor did I expect it. I was under the impression that we'd do a predetermined design. Sort of like when you participate in a Paint and Sip class. I am not a creative person, so it takes me a long time to figure out a design from scratch. Nonetheless, I came up with something that I thought would be lovely. As mentioned, the table is filled with a variety of materials to create your masterpiece. Unfortunately, a lot of the glass pieces come from larger pieces that seemed to have been cut previously. Many of the pieces were cut unevenly or in various shapes so it felt like I was putting a puzzle together. I had to find pieces that fit into one another as best as possible to make some parts of my design cohesive. My design was somewhat abstract. I focused a lot on various sized boxes and lines. It was difficult to do this with broken pieces because I ended up having to cut them more to make them into squares or find multiple pieces of the desired color to make it as close to a square as possible. In my past experience with glass fusing, they offered pre-cut squares and full glass sheets for me to work with, which made it alot easier. In the end, I ended up staying behind to finish my piece because I just could not find enough cohesive pieces to fill the plate. Honestly, I just threw whatever on it to make it complete because I was tired of it. Despite my lack of creative frustration, the staff were extremely kind and helpful. Whenever I needed help or guidance, they were only steps away to assist. In addition, they were so patient with me as I remained behind to finish while others left. Once complete, they took my name and placed it aside to be fired up. I received an email that it was ready for pick up and stopped by accordingly. Overall, I'm not in love with the finished piece but I'm content with the experience. I think I would've enjoyed it more if I had some direction for the design or more pieces that didn't require as much work. The person working next to me also experienced a creativity block and was worried about the time, so I know it's not just me who may have felt uneasy. I don't think I would return only because of the distance. Otherwise, I would give it another try. I also would recommend to others. It's a nice time for friends or a couple to connect and enjoy themselves.

Chie has been a master jeweler and instructor at FIT for almost 2 decades and it shows. Now I'm not even close to being a good jewelry designer but know I need to learn how to create things "the right way", so I came back to Chie. He was my instructor over a decade ago and he's still on point! The best thing about taking a class here is that you can start from any level and still learn something. You can be a super beginner and learn the basics or be a professional who wants to relearn everything, like myself. The class size is small (less than 10 people) and changes week to week. For $440 you get 8 weeks of 3 hour classes. Pay the one time $100 membership fee and you can take more classes as well as sign up for studio time for $8 an hour during his posted hours. Out of all of the classes I've taken around New York, which aren't many, I highly recommend Chie because he's patient and knowledgeable about almost everything. You can take classes from here for years and still be learning.
