We contacted Amanda and gave some sort of vague direction that we didn't want her messing with our chin angle and there would be no matching shirts, but gave no really good information about what we wanted b/c we didn't actually know. We wanted pictures that made our kids look angelic, me 40 lbs lighter and my husband taller. And we kind of wanted to look happy. She suggested locations (fabulous) and took everything in stride at the shoot including (but DEFINITELY not limited to) my son throwing both his shoes at her head. Amanda also has a 3 year old and apparently speaks this language well. Post hissy fit, my son does not look like he just tried to kill the photographer and is now crying hysterically w/ snot running down his nose...he is demurely looking down and holding his baby sister like there is nothing he loves more. She's. a. genius. She was patient with all of us and really acted like she had nothing she'd rather be doing on a Sunday afternoon that a photoshoot that was like herding cats. Angry, rabid, feral cats. She's priced really well...and just burns the shots you want onto a CD so you can get as many photos of whatever size you want without a bunch of weird and confusing photo packages. Yay Amanda. Definitely coming back. We might go barefoot next time though...just to be safe.

I have used a very good (and ultra expensive) photographer in Austin twice before but decided to make the scenic drive out to Smithville to try out Marlene for her $99 headshot special. I was quite impressed. She has a little studio in a separate room off her home, with a bathroom for wardrobe changes and such. She took about 45 minutes with me, adjusting lighting, my poise, and the camera. I don't photograph well, but we came away with three really good options to choose from. Marlene is a pro and I have since referred a couple of friends who need updated professional headshots. My wife and I will be back to see if she can capture both of us at once!

We like to attend the Shakespeare at Winedale plays (highly recommend if you're a Shakespeare fan), so late July and early August are times that we're in the area. I anticipate coming back again and again. Linda was out of town during our stay this time, but Sherri, labeled as "the best help in the world" on their info, proved herself to be exactly that. She took excellent care of us and provided a scrumptious breakfast! We met Linda last year, and she was very knowledgeable about the area (with suggestions of things to see and do) as well as telling us some of the history of the Depot. Speaking of The Depot, do yourself a favor and reserve it! I promise you won't be disappointed. The rooms are lovely, and even on a hot summer night, we went out on the deck and rocked back and forth while looking at the stars (we saw 4 meteors, the International Space Station, and several other satellites).

Rancho Pillow is a quirky motel located in Round Top, a small town close to La Grange. I heard…read moreabout the eccentric property through a CultureMap article of the best getaways in Texas. After a couple of attempts, we stayed there for a long weekend, driving from Houston. There are five or so properties available and most are for 4+ people. The only one available for 2 people is the teepee. Not a bad thing on my end as I've never stayed in a teepee and have always wanted to. This isn't your typical teepee, it's huge and has a low door to get in. The teepee had paintings adorning the walls and a lot of Native American decor. Plus, a king-sized bed. So, so cool! The entire property is a sight to behold and we enjoyed exploring all of the quirks. For an extra charge ($100), you can rent games like croquet, sand volleyball, cornhole. Expensive, for sure. As is the room itself with the teepee costing $300 per night. We were lucky enough to be the only people there the entire long weekend. As a result, they left one of the other properties, The Barn, unlocked for us. This property had a full kitchen and TV so we were able to watch some college football and heat up our food. Our teepee didn't have bathrooms, there was an outdoor bathroom area close by with several stalls and two showers. Pretty cool again but not convenient and not comfortable when it's cold out. All in all, through pricey, it's a one-of-a-kind experience.
