Stepping into Willa's studio/store on a cold, rainy afternoon was nothing short of magical…read more Her pieces are fierce, meaningful, and handmade. Willa is a force of life herself and happy to share the inspiration of each piece. The curation is among the most creative I have ever seen, with earrings, rings, and necklaces displaced on green apples with scattered cranberries supported by antique industrial wood beams. Illuminated by Christmas Tree light. Sigh - my words just don't do it justice. Part of the magic is the open space of the studio - as you're shopping you can look straight through to the workshop to see and experience the tools, materials, and process that transform the raw materials into the beautiful earth-inspired work that you can admire in the front. Beautiful pieces. Easy street parking. Fabulous neighborhood with plenty of other gems to explore by way of ocean views at Munjoy Hill Park, etc.

I bought two pieces - one a mug from Mary K Spencer's garden series. I have a lot of pottery from all over the US and I've never seen a design like this. I also loved the whimsy of Becky Wright's soap sponge holder. The colors are so much fun. But those were just two of the lovely pieces in this shop. They also are reasonable. There are a lot of touristy shops here. It's nice to find work from Maine artists.

Note that you aren't allowed to take food/beverages upstairs. There were a few displays around the cafe too. Staff was nice and friendly. Definitely recommended.

Whenever I travel, I like to take in a museum. Even though I had been to Portland several times…read morebefore, I had actually never been to the Portland Museum of Art - opting to visit other cultural sites in the city. However, since I had some time in my itinerary I decided to check PMA out during my most recent trip to Maine. PMA is split into four levels, and is mainly broken up by American art, European art, and modern art. You won't find many famous works here, however they did have a couple of pieces by Picasso, Monet, and Sargent. During my time there, they had a special exhibition displaying the works of Winslow Homer. One of the more noteworthy components of the museum are restorations of historic homes that are attached to the exhibition spaces. The museum isn't large, so it only took me about 90 minutes to get through it all (though I admittedly don't dawdle). My favorite part was their modern art section - modern art speaks to me so I enjoyed taking in their selection. The staff was friendly, and their gift shop had a decent selection of merch. Overall, I wouldn't necessarily call PMA a must-do in Portland. However, I think it's a good way to spend an afternoon, take in a little culture, and learn about some of the city's history.
