First of all, what a beautiful little shop and incredible trinkets from all over Maine. Jim and his crew are absolutely amazing. On our trip, we picked out a cute little bumble bee bird house made from a workshop in Thomaston, Maine. They offered to ship it for us (yes, it's extra), but he actually held onto it for a few days because we just got into town and had another 12 days of vacation. It arrived a day or two after we got home. Very accommodating and very friendly people. Thank you once again, We will be back. read more

Cutest pottery. Lovely scented soaps. Supported so many local businesses! One of the best shops I went to in Portland.

Maxwell's was one of the shops in Portland that immediately stood out to me upon first glance. It was not just the ornate signage they had out front - I actually remember going to the Maxwell's location in Freeport years back and them having a wide selection of pottery to choose from. I was already exploring most of the other shops in the area, so I figured I would take a step into Maxwell's for a little look-see. The shop itself is quite spacious - they have a lot of inventory, but due to the high ceilings the space seems very open. They have most of what one would expect from a pottery store - plates, mugs, decor, glasses, cookware, etc. I really wasn't looking for anything in particular, but these hand-pained stemless wine glasses really caught my eye so I decided to pick them up. They had intricate designs which kind of looked like stained glass - I couldn't wait to sip from them. The woman who rang me out was super friendly, we had some lovely conversation as she was wrapping my glasses. Overall I had a pleasant experience at Maxwell's - it's definitely worth a stop in during your Portland explorations. read more

This is a great place to find gifts from Maine! Near most of the items, are information about the artist. If the information is not there, just ask. We looked around for a bit, concerned about buying items and having to fit them into our suitcases. They offer shipping thru UPS! So with that constraint out of the way, we were free to shop and was given a little history from one of the owners, Jim O'Conner. They carry unique serving ware, mugs, soaps, artwork, jewelry, and souvenirs. I think we bought something from each category! read more

My husband and I were visiting Portland, and stopped in Maxwell's Pottery just to look around. We ended up buying a ton of stuff, for ourselves and for gifts. They have a large selection of local items; which being from Texas, was exactly what we were looking for. We settled on a few cutting boards, towels, an apron, and a few other small things. We began using our cutting board when we got back to Texas, and after only a few weeks we started to notice a defect. I called the store, and spoke with Lynne and she requested that I email over some photos. I went ahead and did that, and received a call back from Jim right away. He kindly apologized and offered to send me a new cutting board. I work in the customer service industry, and the entire interaction couldn't have gone better. I am extremely grateful for the sincerity and kindness that I received from both Lynne and Jim. I will most definitely be stopping back in their store when I am back in Portland, and I highly recommend that you do the same! Whether you're getting something for yourself, or a gift. This pottery store has a wide variety of items--some contemporary, some more traditional. Prices vary so you can certainly find something nice in your price range. I was very excited to see Salmon Falls stoneware and picked some up. My favorite pieces were the handwarmer mugs that were specially designed to warm your hands while you hold your coffee. The staff was very nice and very helpful. I would definitely go back again. read more

Maxwell's is your typical kitchy seaside store - full of cute pottery and homeware souvenirs. Some of it is tacky, most of it is really nice. However, I tried to take a picture with my cell phone of some glasses I thought a friend's boyfriend would really like to show her in case she wanted to buy them as a gift for him... and I was immediately scolded by an older man who I presume owned the shop "Excuse me! We don't allow photography." The tone of voice was so overwhelmingly rude and I was so offended that I really didn't feel like giving them my business. I'm sure they don't want people copying other people's original work, but he didn't bother to explain that, nor was he polite. I'd rather give the original artists my business than buying through him. read more

This is one of my favorite stores in Portland. I am surprised to see one reviewer referring to some of the merchandise being tacky. I don't care for cookie cutter stores and this one is full of unique and interesting items. It is my go-to place for buying gifts because I can find something fitting for anyone. I recently purchased an engagement gift for my niece there. Perhaps you will find it is not to your taste, but I highly recommend checking it out. read more

My husband I visited Maine last summer and happened upon this cute little shop. They had the coolest wooden carved crows made from a local artist. We got one and the owners took care of the shipping details for us. We've since purchased several more for friends as gifts since they're so unique. The owner's remembered us and make it so easy every time! There is also great European pottery that I haven't found anywhere else. They are so nice and friendly we'll definitely be back this summer. I posted a review several weeks ago describing a disappointing visit my wife and I had at this store back in March while visiting Old Port. We were contacted a week or so later by the store owners offering a full apology over the confusion and expressed much concern to make things right for us. They went out of their way to do so and It really showed us that they really value their business and customer relations.In today's world its not often business owners take the time to properly address the negative issues.We are very satisfied now and will certainly visit this fine little shop on our next visit to Maine. read more
