I loved visiting this store as a kid with my mom. They sell an impressive collection of fabrics from silks, wools, cottons, and polyesters, as well as many notions for any of your projects. After coming back years later as an adult, it's not changed a bit. They import a variety of fabrics you won't find at Jo-Ann's. The girls who work here are quite knowledgeable about sewing and are happy to answer your questions. In contrast to chain craft stores, they do not selling the commercial patterns from brands like Vogue or McCalls. They do sell indie brand patterns like Tilly and the Buttons and they have the catalogues from major brands. (The latter is there to help you estimate how much you need to order/cut for your project.) Prices are a bit high but the quality of the fabrics is outstanding. Sometimes they have sales on items - keep an eye out for them. They even offer sewing classes - ask someone for a calendar of events. If you are ever in town, pay them a visit - you won't regret it. This is a lovely shop with designer (Dolce & Gabbana, Versace are just two options that I saw this week) fabrics to make high end quality clothes, including wedding and other fancy dresses. The cheapest yardage I saw was $30 a yard, up to $100+ per yard. While this is a higher price point than Joann's, the quality is *significantly* better. I think they could probably color match any zipper with their extensive selection and have a wide variety of buttons. There are a few paper pattern options by indy designers Sew Liberated, 100 Acts of Sewing, Papercut Patterns, The Assembly Line, Paper Theory along with Burda. The reason this is a four and not a five star review was the lack of welcome and customer service when I visited. I was in search of a button. No, I was not playing the game, but needed a specific size and style of button, something out of the ordinary and not available in the chain fabric stores. It was my great fortune to stumble upon Mulberry's. (I'd be remiss if I didn't extend kudos, in part, to the Yelp search feature in helping me find it.) It took quite awhile to work my way to the buttons, since I spent more time than I should have perusing some of the most gorgeous and unusual fabrics. Each one seemed to immediately inspire me to conjure the perfect outfit or home decor accessory. In fact, I think I had my entire wardrobe and part of my living room accents for the next five years mapped out. But alas, and fortunately for my bank account, my time was limited so I left the conjuring for another day. Once I made it to the buttons, I had another dilemma: finding the right style; not because of the paucity of choices, but rather because of the abundance of them. Incredible choices: some fun ones, some classic, some designer-like, but all capable of fitting into whatever style niche might be needed. I finally ended up with two that are so perfect they seem tailor-made. Finally, something trendy that's actually on the happy side of trendy. These are those rare, blessed people who take the artistic pomposity of the Carrboro hippie culture and say, "Ok, make something, man!" What you buy here is fabric. When you buy it, it will not be already fashioned into clothes or anything else. On the contrary, it will be raw bolts of cloth that you must then use to create your own clothes. Sound complicated? It is. But, like other acts of self-purpose, it has its own rewards. If that sounds like too much for you, get back to your $7 chai. You'll be fine. There's a lot of choice here. Some of this fabric is - I'm going to say it - fabulous, and I guarantee you'll find something you like. Of course all of the fixins are here too, dozens of types of thread and ribbon and buttons. Go nuts, dude. The staff is very knowledgeable and seems genuinely interested in their craft. Ask them questions, and you will get useful answers, or my name isn't Maximillion Von Ryderberg. Mulberry Silks is a lovely fabric store located in the old Carr Mill Mall. They've been in business for over 25 years, that's saying a lot. The owner and staff are quite knowledgeable and friendly. They have multiple years of skill and experience. I've personally shopped with them on a number of occasions for fabric for various occasions; in my case I was generally looking for small to mid-sized pieces of fabric, in which case the staff was more than willing to accommodate me. They have everything from oil-fabric (for making aprons or lunch bags) to Italian silk tie fabric, which is absolutely beautiful. The store is kept extremely organized and neat, all the fabrics are visible on large reams easy for cutting the size of your choice. They also had a few photos up of young ladies in gowns and prom dresses which gives one a vision of what they can create. read more

I don't sew, but my dad does. And as far as fabrics go, this place has the coolest, most contemporary and fresh choices. Everytime I pass their window they have a gorgeous new display and everytime I make it inside they have a new selection to discover. I've found everything from alpacas to cactus to bunny butts to soda cans to apples to lemurs. I love to come in and buy fabric and ship it home to my dad to make all kinds of projects. He's made me bow ties and shopping bags and dresses and aprons and everyone wants to know where they came from! read more

They have fine silks, cotton lawns, thick wool form Italy, a little of everything. The owner is super friendly and helpful and it shows how much she enjoys sewing and talking to customers. I had never stopped in here because I thought they just carried silks which although pretty, I'm more of a cotton girl. I went in the other day to browse as one of the fabrics caught my eye and I HAD to investigate. I was wincing as I picked up the fabric thinking don't even look because it will be way out of your price range but surprisingly I thought the price was fair for the design and hand of the fabric and it was Cotton! I wouldn't be able to make a bedspread but I could get enough for a skirt at least. They are not a huge store so the selection has been culled to offering inspiring prints and fabrics. Great for adding a bit of punch to an ordinary fabric or bringing whimsy and artistic touches into your home or wardrobe. read more

This place is amazing, I asked the people on yelp for their recommendations on a fabric store and they came through! Not only am I buying fabric but I am learning to make my own clothes. The owner teaches the Saturday class and is very knowledgeable. This isn't a high school class where you learn to just read a pattern, I'm also learning how to make adjustments for a better fit and how to modify the style to my taste. This is exactly what I have been looking for. Everyone here is really friendly and the fabrics are great. Just walking into this place will fire up your imagination. I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is the only place in the Triangle that you can get quality garment fabric that's not quilting cotton (which breaks my heart!) If you need that perfect fabric for a project that's been sitting on your to-do, this is your place. Completely unique bolts, great customer service, I just wish they had more locations around the Triangle because I'm in Durham and sometimes want fabric sooooooo bad, but don't want to fight the traffic/parking to get there. read more

On vacation and stopped in for a quick visit. Beautiful store and everything you would need for sewing. The fabric selection is fantastic. I especially loved their buttons. Very unique. The staff was appropriately attentive and pleasant. My son who lives in the area saw me looking at something and offered to pick it up for me, if after I returned home I decided I should have bought it. Mulberry Silks is the go to place for fashion fabric in the Triangle. They have a small shop and the inventory changes frequently, so go back often. I have gotten fabric by name brand designers (DVF, Marc Jacobs, Theory, and Prada) and if you don't find what you're looking for the staff is happy to help you order what you might need. In contrast to other reviews I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. They are by no means pushy, so if you have a question about how to pre-treat a fabric or if it would work for the project that you have on your table I encourage you to ask. This shop is a huge leap over Hancock's or JoAnn's in terms of quality and selection. If your interested in developing your sewing skills even more check out their sewing workshops and classes. We who love quality fabric really must supporrt shops such as Mulberry Silks. Waechters in Asheville is the latest store to close as did Kaplans in Kansas City. I travel and thrill when I can get to Mulberry Silks....not as frequently as I would like. Once I enter I become very excited which is likely annoying to the locals but I have always been treated with great porfessionalism and support by the lovely women who work there. I am not a professionally trained seamstress so I need all the help I can get and I have always gotten good advice as to drape of fabric, the care of fabric,etc. at Mulberry Silk. I don't know anything about fabric or clothes-making. i had hoped to learn, which is why I signed up for a sewing class at Mulberry. The website doesn't fully describe the classes offered, which it should really do a better job of. While it says that beginners are welcome, the Saturday morning class is really meant for people who have some experience and are seeking help with tricky projects. It is not a didactic class, but a "learn by doing" class, which is very difficult for someone who has never sewed before. There is one instructor rotating among 5 or 6 students, and if you don't know what you're doing you'll end up twiddling your thumbs waiting for your turn. And it's so rushed that the instructor just gets you through the pattern and doesn't explain the fundamentals so you understand. The very basic top I'm learning to make will end up costing about $100 after the classes, and I'm still not comfortable following a pattern. Further, nobody explained to me what materials I needed to bring and that I would have to pay extra for bobbins and thread used in the class. It's a great service, but they should really be more clear about the expectations for the class and make sure everyone gets their money's worth. read more

Mulberry Silks has begun offering sewing classes to kids. I am an avid sewer and have been since I was a teen. I was turned on to sewing by a great teacher in a small store in my hometown. I am delighted that my daughter has found a similar teacher of her own. My daughter has been taking classes at Mulberry Silks for 3+ years and during that time the class selection have steadily grown. There are a variety of things that can catch the interest of tweens and teens alike ...from more crafty project based classes to creative fashion classes. Susan is a wonderful teacher and gets the kids excited to sew. The classes are a small size so Susan has the time to work with each child at their skill level. She is very good at teaching the basics of how to work with a pattern and then how to elaborate on the basic pattern to make it your own. It does not matter if it is lunch box or zip up hoodie. If your child is into the creative projects or likes the concept of recycling, several classes take this concept to heart by re-inventing things or looking to other places for sources of fabric. Perhaps taking a pair of jeans and creating an apron or turning old shirts into adorable stuffed animals. If you do not have a sewing machine, do not let it stop you from taking a class. You can use one from Mulberry Silks' machines for the class ... just make sure to let them know when you sign up. But be forewarned, it may spoil you child so that she/he will never want to use a more basic sewing machine again. As to some of the previous comments which have been posted. I do not know of any stores that like to have a customer enter with food products, full or empty. The danger lies in the damaging the merchandise in the store. If a bolt of fabric has coffee spilled on it... the store can not longer sell it and I am sure such an inconsiderate customer would not be happy to have to pay for the fabric either. The fabrics are expense in Mulberry , but the quality is well above the cheap chain store fabrics. Take a moment to look at the thread count, the clarity of color and feel "the hand" of the fabric. These are not V.I.P. cottons. These fabrics are they level of what you find in the fabric district in NYC or SF. It was a very pleasant surprise for me to find such a store when I moved here 10yrs ago. As for rude sales people --- have you every been to JoAnn's ? Those sales people are truly rude, unhelpful, unknowable and far to busy to be interrupted when you can even find one in the store. I have found that Mulberry Silks staff are very friendly and more than willing to help. They allow you to browse and ponder over your choices. If you need help, just speak up and ask.... that is why you have a voice. I feel the only rude person here was the reviewer and in the way she phrased her opinions. read more
