Walking in, the ambience of this place was fantastic. There were people on dates, and lots of families. We were greeted right away and sat in a nice table by a window. Every time myself and my flatmates just NEED that hit of Fish & Chips we head down to old Billy Murgatroyds in Yeadon. Amazingly fast service and friendly staff, not to mention gorgeous fish & chips, make this our number one choice every time. What makes this Murgatroyds even better is that Tarnfield park is situated a minute or so down the road so you can overlook the lake whilst devouring your dinner! A massive amount of fish, chips, salt and vinegar (and a large dandelion and burdock to go please!) costs under £8 so it won't break the bank. If you decide you'd like to have a more refined lunch, you may order from the restaurant that looks like something out of an old souped up saloon bar. This was a disgrace!! Rebecca and Kim were awful unpleasant people now I advise anyone with colour not to go there! Rebecca had a terrible attitude from the start after me asking politely for a booth she then expected me to seat my 16month old without a baby seat! I had to ask for a baby seat she then said well u can't have one there so I said okay we will sit somewhere else. She then moved us to a corner well out of the way this was horrendous to say she was a manager and after me having to remind her that there are certain ways to speak to people she still continued!! We had asked how long for our food as we were waiting a while. Kim had dropped mayo sachets into my drink and picked it out with her finger after me having to ask for another drink she walked away sniggered and laughed!! It was my mother in laws birthday and my mum has cancer. Regardless bc of our colour we were treated different it was blatantly obvious since we had walked in!! We couldn't even enjoy our meal and my mum could not finish her dessert due to the atmosphere these women had given!! read more

Now then, Murgatroyds Fish and Chips are different class. I've only eaten in here twice and found the food to be good but I do have one reservation which is I don't like to see waste so I ordered what I thought would be a normal size portion but turned out to be big enough for Eamonn Holmes and Bubbles Devere to share! Not much of a complaint that is it ? They gave me too much to eat :) Anyway, The "Whale" and chips were as good as you get anywhere in Leeds Imho but I wasn't keen on the Mushy peas and the wife wasn't happy about me eating them (can of air freshener for later, sir?). Plenty of bread and butter and service was good but a little slow as a coach party of folk EVEN OLDER than me had just arrived. Go on, try it! This place is definitely the best place for fish and chips!! Ok so I'll admit you sit in the restaurant and you are surrounded by OAP's but be honest the oldest know best! The fish and chips come in a range of portion sizes and who ever can finish the Billy murg special deserves a medal! It's huge! I love the atmosphere in this place it's so relaxed I could sit for hours drinking tea and people watching. I'd definitely recommend you take a visit to see for yourself. Murgatroyds is a fish and chip joint that you simply cannot miss. It is curiously built in the style of a very large saloon bar, and is on the road through Yeadon on the way to the airport, making you wonder whether it has ever been someones very first impression of this country! At just under a tenner for a portion of fish and chips and a drink, it will set you back more than your average takeaway, who would charge half of that fairly steep price, and whilst the food ain't half bad, and in a slightly more rural area, I find it tough paying typical mid-range restaurant prices for fish and chips.. For a slightly more epic and larger meal, there is ample seating, and the staff are great. read more

This is a must visit for me and my family every time I'm back in Yorkshire. The clientele are all OAPs, and the seats are all made of plastic (perhaps due to the clientele!). They play quite loud 80s pop music. The whole thing is very odd, and me and my brother always ridicule the silly things on the menu. Seafood and chicken paella anyone? No? Three cheese broccoli and pasta bake? Seriously, who comes here and has anything other than fish and chips? It's not a refined place, but the point is, these fish and chips are mighty. Without a shadow of a doubt the worst fish and chips I've had in my life, and a contender for the worst meal I've ever "eaten". I say "eaten" because even though it cost an absolute fortune, I ate about 4 chips, 2 bites of the fish, and threw the rest in the bin and went hungry instead. To the best of my recollection this is the only time in my life I've done this - my Mum raised me to hate waste and now I eat EVERYTHING - but it was so bad I'd barely consider what I was given "food". The chips were dry, hollow husks with no flavour and the fish literally made me gag. It seemed like they'd been frying both for about a week and I phisically couldn't eat either. I want to mention the far better fish and chip shop locally, that charges a sensible price for a meal, but don't want to seem like I have an ulterior motive for writing this review so I'll just say you'd be far better off eating a chunk of dirt from outside the shop and saving your money. This Fish and Chip shop is very popular locally and ever bus trips stop here to eat. It is located on the outskirts of Leeds very close to Leeds/Bradford airport. There is large free carpark. Aswell as the restuarant you also the option of take out. I have to say this place does get very busy expect to wait to be seated in the restuarant or for takeout at peak times. Sunday afternoon seems a particularly busy time. So whats on the menu, fish and lots of it. Its mostly the traditional battered white fish but there other options too including fish pie. Called here yesterday for a quick meal instead of eating at my regular hotel (Chevin Lodge). No queue. Polite and attentive staff, and pretty quick service. Had a large Haddock with Chips, and Mushy peas, Tea, B &B. Good sized fish, well cooked but maybe a bit on the greasy side. Excellent mushys , made by soaking dried ones in the proper way. But they added salt ! Since salt is provided, why foist it on us! Good tasting tea, but the water jug wouldn't pour properly so it ran over the table.( a common problem with stainless steel teapots and jugs) Verdict - there are better F & C restaurants within a few miles (eg Maypole at Otley or Bryans in Headingley) read more

Having rung ahead to check that they did gluten free fish and chips we arrived eager for a treat. Oh dear. Disapointment #1 the price. Almost £10 for basic fish and chips, no extras. I don't mind paying a high price for quality but they need to deliver on implicit promise of the high price. Disapointment #2 the fish and chip meal is not gluten free as the chips are cooked in the same fryer as battered products. The real danger here is that the staff seem convinced that they are gluten free and their ignorance means pain and suffering for people with coeliac disease. They did offer fries but is that really what you travel 20 miles to a 'traditional' fish and chip restaurant for? Disapointment #3 if you want a smaller portion and you have coeliac disease you are out of luck, they only do one size. Oh, sorry, you could get the children's portion BUT THEY HAVE TO CHARGE FOR A NORMAL PORTION. Disapointment #4 the meal didn't rate highly at all, there are many many establishments nearby where you can buy far better fish and chips for a much more reasonable price. read more

You can tell this is a good fish and chip restaurante because it's always busy! You will have to wait to sit down, but once you're in you will realise why. You get a good portion of fish, and it is very nice. It is also licenced. When I worked at Leeds Bradford airport used to occasionally pop in for fish and chips. It's consistently pretty good, although if you sit in to eat you pay about 60% more, so would normally get it from the takeaway part and sit outside if it wasn't raining. The portions are big, and the fish is always good, although sometimes find that the chips are a bit greasy and could be cooked for longer. Not sure what they fry in? The place is always busy, mostly fleecing grey haired patrons of their hard earned pensions. Situated at the top of Yeadon highstreet on the road towards Leed Bradford airport. This is my favourite fish and chip restaurant and I ffel the quality of the food knocks the socks off the famous local Harry Ramsdens. The portions are huge, the batter crisp and the chips lovely. They do a wide range of other food to cater for most. They have special OAP deals which seem a bargain, not sure of the price but it's 2-3 courses at a real cheap price. Love it here read more

Went to Murgatroyds Bank Holiday Monday tea time, we queued for about 20 mins to be seated, no staff offered advice on how long we would have to wait which would have been useful however, once seated staff were polite and efficient. We had Haddock & Chips £8.95 served with bread and butter the portion was generous and excellent quality. Good dessert choice although we were full so didn't indulge. There was an OAP choice of 3 courses for £8.95 which looked very good value. Well worth a visit but choose your time to avoid the queue! read more

Great fish & chips. Last time I was there, the queue for tables was meandering out the door! Well it was a Sunday afternoon. Decided on take away instead. Always good & staff seem really switched on & efficient. The mushy peas are done the authentic way too. We go to Murgy's reasonably often, about every six weeks, and the food is usually very good. Occasionally the chips are not warm enough but they will always replace them quickly. I recently had a huge prawn salad which was really too big and my family had fish and chips and thought it was very good. Best time to go is when you think it will be busy as the food always seems better when the turnover is quicker. Very nice puds and special prices for pensioners which may be why it is always busy.
