I found myself needing a camera with in body stabilization after shoulder injury and knew I wanted to go with either a Nikon Z7iii or Z8. Doug and I spoke and both felt that as an amateur the Z7ii world be a good fit. I also picked out a Nikon FTZ II and a Nikon Z MC 105mm macro lens. Knowing I was unable to make the two hour drive, Doug arranged for free shipping and the store even gave me a discount on the lens. I signed up and attended the Yew Dell botanical gardens event as well as the Louisville bats recent game. The Yew Dell gardens event was way to early in the season as not many flowers were in bloom. The introduction presentation by the Murphy's camera rep was introductory to basic knowledge. We had access to a couple of the hot houses/ green houses but aside from that we would have been better off saving the money and buying our own entry later in the spring. The baseball event was much less than I had hoped. The event add said we would be above the dugout which we were! BUT it was the wrong dugout. The stadium is layed out with the home plate / 2nd base line just off north to the east. meaning that the seats faced directly into the sun. Any shot inside 2nd base or basically anything in the infield resulted in the sun shining DIRECTLY from where we were seated. I was using a 4 inch sun shade which had little to any effect because of the sun angle this time of year. I emailed the store and advised them of this really unacceptable seating for photography and received no response and obviously nothing was done to correct this. Yes we could get up and roam and take photos which I tried to do but the 4 seats that I picked on the opposite side of the stadium allowed me minimal time as the seat ticket holders necessitated my move. Frustration that this oversite as to the proper seating was not dealt with plus roaming to find a good seat only to be moved by the staff resulted in my leaving before the game even started. Could I have gotten a few shots? sure but the fee we paid should have accorded us better seating. The seating is really the only thing this event offered and it was not good. They have a great selection of used gear, which is on display both in store and on their website for a better price than many online marketplaces. I thought I knew pretty well what I wanted when I walked in, and the employee who greeted me was very helpful and fast, but also honest and informative when something I wanted was probably going to be cheaper or easier to find online. I just picked up an older camera and lens to learn photography without breaking the bank, but I've already been recommending my friends come here too. I am pretty inexperienced at printing out pictures I have taken. I used their system for uploading camera images and they were super helpful in stepping me through the process. The finished pictures, while of very high quality, were different from my expectations in a few ways, being somewhat darker than my originals and cropped in funny ways. Here is where their processing specialist, Erica, stepped in to save me. She so patiently listened to my feedback and explained how image appearance on my laptop will not always render color faithfully and how overall image brightness can look different from a printed result. She explained aspect ratios and little tricks in their print ordering tool that can make my result much more predictable and better looking. Erica told me she could reprint my order right then and worked with me throughout to see if I was happy with the result. Any issues I'd originally had with my prints were entirely of my own doing. I fully expected to pay for the do-over and would have been happy to pay again, as my final prints were exactly what I'd hoped for. Erica told me "no charge", however, insisting they were reprints. These folks go very far out of their way to ensure you leave their business satisfied and happy. I look forward to more interactions with their staff and especially Erica. read more

Staff are knowledgable about cameras, lens, and associated equipment. After some 65 years as a photographer and the last 30 years of shopping and discussing photo issues and questions with the Murphy's staff I decided to write this review. Obviously some staff know more about one product that the other but they work as a team from a customer's perspective. If they don't have the answer or if they don't offer the service they are very helpful in referring the customer to a source that can help them. Murphy's offers education classes in photography which is not often found in regional retail stores offerings. I have shopped world wide for my camera equipment and for the past 30 years have visited Murphy's for the camera my needs. read more

Stopped in to get some information on their rentals, which I love that they have. A friend of mine basically demanded that she be allowed to borrow my DSLR for her camping and hiking trip to Alaska (asking me would have been nice...). I begrudgingly acquiesced to allowing her to use my older Nikon body, but there was no way she was going to take my very VERY expensive zoom lens. So we checked some out at Murphy's. The prices are ok for day/weekend/week rentals. Anything beyond that, you might as well buy a used lens for close to the same price. And they have a pretty decent selection of used merchandise. She ended up deciding to "settle" for using my kit lens instead of renting. But they are there should YOU need any equipment or want to try before you buy. read more

I'm a huge fan of the locally owned and operated business, but I used to work next door to this joint and, MAN, the absolute meanest, nastiest most UN-neighborly folks EVER. INCLUDING MR. MURPHY. I've been educating myself on dslr cameras, but I knew I needed to talk to someone in person who could tell me more. They were great! Gave me good info and answered all my questions regarding cameras. I went in leaning toward Nikon, but as soon as I got my hands on the cameras, I realized that canon's cameras were more comfortable to me! I couldn't afford the new stuff so he showed me their used cameras, I found one I liked, and their prices were slightly more than trying to buy off eBay. Next we talked lenses, and I tried to keep it short but there is A LOT to consider in lenses. I knew for when I've taken photos in the past I wanted more magnification than the "kit" lens would offer. I also know as I find how i like to take photos I will want to get other lenses. So he agreed to swap the lens that was on it for one that would go further in range, for only $50 more than the camera kit already was. All in all? Yes it's a couple year old camera, but I'm also learning to drive it, I don't need a Ferrari of a camera for my first one, and I got a good, fair deal! I plan on going there again when I need more info, or gear. read more

We called them months ago about getting a camera but they (and everywhere else we checked) were out of stock. As soon as they got some in stock, they called us back to let us know that a shipment had come in and that they were holding a camera for us if we wanted it. Awesome! I went in today to buy a camera that I have been debating about buying for a few months. Luis was an incredible help. He answered all of my questions and helped me with my purchase. Some of the accessories I wanted, he took me around the store and made sure the bag would fit my camera and other things. He helped me test out a tripod. He was really patient, since I am a new photographer and wasn't sure about certain things. He didn't try to sell me anything extra and I will definitely come back to get any new lenses or to get a another camera. The staff is helpful and has a good variety of photo goods at the Bardstown Road store. If I need something in a pinch, I know I can go to Murphy's. But if I don't need a piece of equipment right away, it is much cheaper to buy online. Chuck Rubin's up the road has fewer items, but is a lot more fun and way more laid back. LIke supporting local businesses and have bought several cameras there. However, no more. The equipment is of good quality but prices are high and the atmosphere is less than warm. With a quick, toll free call, we found quality equipment at lower cost and friendlier service. The last straw was attempting to trade-in a fairly new camera, we had bought from them, to upgrade our equipment to a much more costly one. One staff member misled us on the trade in and the overall atmosphere was such that we found a much better deal and said a final goodbye. Local businesses can stay competitive but only if they offer good customer service. read more

Years ago I bought all my cameras at Murphy's, they were the greatest, they had all the accessories, odds and ends I needed when I needed them. The last 6 times I have been in Murphy's camera it has been a fruitless excercise in frustration and I have vowed never to return as the knowlege of their staff as well as their store's stocks have gone steadily downhill over the last 5 to 6 years. Today I returned to their Bardstown road store to purchase a sync cable for my strobes, a minor accessory that any decent camera store would have a wide selection of. I had been in the store the previous week needing this cable to finish a job and was told that they absolutly would have it today. I returned today and not one in the store. This is the 6th time in the past year I have gone into Murphy's needing some minor accessory only to be told that it doesn't exist, they don't carry it anymore, no one has ever heard of it. Murphy's used to be a great resource for professionals but no longer, today it is geared to consumer cameras and volume sales and is no longer a resource I can count on. Makes no difference, I can buy anything I need online much cheaper, the service is no longer high quality so why should I buy my more expensive gear there? read more
