This is gonna be short: We walked in about 8:40pm on a Friday night. Party of 4. No one at the podium to greet us. 3 people are at the bar and one bartender. We had to go to bar to ask the bartender if they were serving food. He said, "Yessir." I asked, "Do we sit anywhere?". "Yes." We sit down but as I'm sitting, I didn't take my jacket off or my hat because I didn't feel as though anyone else was working there. Is the guy at the bar coming over? Are there any other servers working? We were already deciding if we should leave . It was just awkward. Just then the bartender comes to our side of the bar but doesn't actually come to the table. I go to the bar and he tells me that he's not even the regular bartender and he can't make complicated cocktails just beer and simple drinks. I ask for a menu and all they had was just late night pub finger food. Not what we were looking for. I gave the menu back to him and we left. Just a really awkward experience for a nearly completely empty bar/restaurant. Wish we'd have Yelped beforehand. Not good. Don't recommend. Doubt we'll try again. read more

Needs better security. They don't care about capacity as long as they get more money. Drinks are overpriced, and it's not worth the 10 minute wait to even get to the bar. But truly, I feel bad for the bartenders as they're put under constant pressure from drunk assholes who don't understand what manners or personal space are. If capacity was more controlled, this wouldn't be a problem. But it clearly is. Most overrated bar in Rochester. Go to any other bar. read more

Cute little pub, but was lacking anything to make it memorable, no Irish music, the food coming out of the kitchen was not a thing to wow about. Did go in looking for a Kilkenny, and most Irish pubs have that one as its a fairly inexpensive beer. Nope. Not here. Service was a bit rough this time. I agree with most of the reviews here. This is really a dive bar masquerading as an Irish bar. Service is average and hardly friendly. Menu is limited and nothing Irish about it. They had Guinness on tap but mine came from around the back of the bar and after tasting it, definitely from a can. Wings are "market price" lol. I won't even go into the blue cheese issue (you can see for yourself in the photo), but I will say what I got wasn't blue cheese or ranch...hmmm. Very average taste and Oh, no celery by the way. I am not even sure why I ended up here again. Me and my wife taking an evening stroll and decided to get a quick beer on a Sunday evening. We wnet straight to the bar assuming it would be quicker than getting service on the table. The place was at 60-70 % occupancy on a Sunday evening there was literally only one waitress serving the bar and the tables. We really felt bad for her. We asked for Sam Adams from the tap and a panini. We got an extremely watered down beer after 25 mins and we returned it and asked for blue moon from the tap. 10 mins later we get another watered down beer. At this point, we didn't care. I didn't want to return it and ask for a bottled beer only to wait for 10-15 more mins. We received the paninis after 50 mins since we sat down. I am not blaming the waitress here. We really feel for her. But what was suppose to be a quick beer ended up being a 1.15 hour ordeal which was not even enjoyable. read more

What a dump, as I am Irish I know what an Irish pub should be. Serving Guinness and sticking some flags up doesn't make it an Irish Bar! The menu was nothing like the online version, one burger and that's your choice! I got given the drinks menu which the one beer I wanted they didn't have, ok not my day. "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." Using his law, not the right beer, the x2 extremely raw under cooked burgers, the no cutlery to start with, ask for ketchup which he gives us is empty, when finally asked just before we leave 50% of this joke of a meal the barman asks was that ok he couldn't give a damn of our complaint he just wanted paying. Of the dozens of Irish Bars in the States and Canada I have visited this is without doubt the worst, so at least there good st something. This place is comical. I am new to the area and heard about this popular bar. I came here and was denied access due to my attire. I had on a collard shirt, black jeans with subtle rips (not showing skin at all). After this ordeal, I was surprised to see the bouncer let two guys in with wrinkled white t-shirts and BASKETBALL SHORTS. I waited around and started to see that this was a "pick and choose" ordeal. Three ladies went in with ripped jeans. Another guy went in with a rip in one leg. I went back to say, "you let other people in that obviously go against your dress policy." His response was "Our rules are our rules". Very comical. read more

This is a nice bar with a smaller menu and beer list. Service was friendly and prompt. Prices are average. My friend and I were staying in the area for a concert and this place was recommended to us for food. It was walking distance from the hotel and concert venue which was great, so we figured we'd give it a try. We ordered and split buffalo cauliflower which was delicious. Since we couldn't agree on a sauce, the waitress brought us ranch, BBQ and honey mustard. All were great options but the BBQ was my favorite. My friend ordered a turkey club sandwich and I got the blt, both with a side of tater tots. The portion was big and filling, my only complaint was that the blt was served dry (which I didn't realize) and I had to call the waitress back for mayo. Who wants a dry blt?! It threw me off a little but wasn't a huge deal. Over all, our meal with appetizer and a few beers was decent and under $50. I'm giving 3 stars because it although it is pub food, it would be nice to have a bigger range of healthier and non greasy options other than just a couple salads. I have a few experiences here that are really rather annoying. A group of us from work made our way down there for drinks after a meeting. It was at about 5% capacity in the entire building and a Tuesday night, yet the replacement bartender for the one who was leaving when we got there was rude, inattentive, and dismissive. We asked for menus, which he gave, then he just never came back for an hour, even after we tried to signal him. We were seated at the bar. He kept using the cut through to not walk past us. None of us were drunk or disrespectful so it seemed weird to avoid the group. Then when we finally wanted to cash out because we needed to go somewhere that we could get food and service, I had to hunt him down. He then avoided for another 20 minutes, and we had to have another gentlemen find him and ask for both checks. It was very bizarre for someone with few customers. I have never, since becoming a fully formed adult, left below a 15% tip, and I did not even leave 10. Another time, after a holiday party which we had at Murphy's, the members from the party were charged $10 each after spending $800 in there from 5p-9pm. Apparently after 9pm they charge a cover, even if you have been there on and off all evening? There was no band, no specialised dj or show , that I could see. The bartenders were very friendly and attentive that evening, which was a Friday, but I assume the bar was only at 60% capacity because of the cover, which most bars in east ave don't charge anymore, unless for special events. read more

Trying to get a drink in this place on a saturday night...it is pathetic. The wait staff completely dismisses you if you're not under 25, or if you don't know them. Guess what, the older ones buy more. I will never be back at this establishment and will be spending my money elsewhere. It is a good people watching spot. read more

For whatever reason, I tried to watch Super Bowl at Murphy's Law yesterday. It's not my favorite venue for various reasons. First of all, like others have mentioned, it can be douchebaggery central on Friday's and Saturdays. Every city needs this sort of weekend "meat market", so I'm not hating. Just as a bar by itself, minus the crowd it draws, it's quite mediocre. The staff is not very friendly. We had issues ordering food yesterday on Super Bowl Sunday. The bartender said she would send a server out, but that didn't really happen so we ended up ordering at the bar. The bar wasn't even that busy. Ultimately the food came out, but with a bit of bartender attitude for ordering through her. Maybe it was miscommunication, but the server came by only once and never came back. The food is also pretty lackluster and average at best. The nachos are nicely portioned, but are one-note in terms of taste. They can definitely use some jalapenos and additional salsa. My friend had the potato skins that she described as "meh": I feel like Murphy's Law masquerades as an Irish Pub, without actual good food. A bunch of potato items on the menu does not make it an Irish Pub. The other reason for the 2-star review is that it's just a bad venue for sports watching and trivia. It's fine when you're out on the weekend having drinks with friends. But when you're having problems hearing the Quizmaster's questions on trivia night or hearing the game broadcast, it gets frustrating. There are certainly better bars to watch the game and for trivia night. So i'm sorry to sound like a hater, but yeah, I'm not a huge fan of this place. read more

Man, this place used to be a great time. They're trying to charge a cover charge on a Friday night with like 15 people in the bar. No band, nothing special, just a cover. Then right behind us they let the EXACT same group we were with (more women in that one) and didn't charge them a cover. Then tried to make up for it by trying to come and get us after we went to Filger's and had a great time. There is absolutely no reason that you should spend the money on East ave to get into a bar with nothing going on. Do not come to this bar if you have any level of concern for your own safety/well-being. On New Year's Eve (Tuesday 12/31/19), I arrived at Murphy's around 9:00 p.m. and paid a $10 cover charge to enter. For the beginning of the night, it was a pleasant evening, although it was next to impossible to get a drink or any kind of recognition from the bartenders. I believe I waited approximately 25 minutes for every drink order, but I also understand that a holiday is a very busy time, so that is not why I'm writing this review today. Around the time that the ball dropped at midnight, an altercation began between two men on the upper floor, which overlooked the downstairs area where I was standing with my group. As the altercation ensued, two glasses fell from the upper area, and hit me directly in the back of my head. The first only bounced off of my head (which hurt), and the second actually shattered entirely on my head. Immediately following that, the downstairs security aggressively pushed myself and others around me away from the area where the glasses fell, which was exactly where I had been standing. Within minutes, my group noticed that my head had begun to bleed steadily. It was not a minor cut, but rather a gash and a large bump beginning to form from where I was hit. When my attention was brought to the blood running into my hair, I notified two employees: the security guard, and a nearby bartender. The only response I got from either of them was, "Wow." When this incident occurred, obviously I had no part in the altercation, and yet I suffered as a result of it and two separate employees of the establishment had zero intention of offering me any help when I brought it to their attention. They could have brought over a manager, tried to give me some kind of first-aid support, or literally even asked how I was, but instead they brushed past me like it hadn't even happened. I realize that if I had been able to take pictures of my injury/the incident that night, this would be a much stronger outreach, however I did not have my phone with me and both my group and myself were more concerned with my well-being and getting me to a safer place to assess my injury than reporting the incident when I had already been ignored twice. I hope that anyone reading this thinks twice about going to this bar on a busy night, because if something happens to you they will not care or do anything to help you. read more

Came in contact with an entirely to self-absorbed/pathetically insecure bouncer while visiting this bar. To preface I got to the bar around closing time and only had time for a beer, so virtually sober encounter. Essentially I took a single step out of the bar to go to the outside portion of the bar, as soon as I took a step out I realized the outside bar was closed so I turned around to go back in to see my friends, at which point I was stopped by the bouncer who said no reentry. I calmly explained the situation, which of course got me no where. The odd thing was that reentry was allowed for select girls, but not for any men, which is blatantly sexist. At the point I realized I would have to wait outside I decided to strike up a conversation with the bouncer in earnest to pass the time until they came out. He took great offense to this approach, and started getting highly belligerent with me for no apparent reason. As far as I see it the bouncer should be the one deescalating a situation not increasing tension. At one point while I was trying to cool him down, he put his hands on me and pushed me for again no apparent reason. I should also mention that while I was at the door waiting for my friends, several other people, esp. women, came up to him in hysterics asking for his name, because they wanted to report him by name for putting his hands on them. Whether this was an act of sexual harassment or the simple bullying that I experienced is hard to say. To sum up, the fact of the matter is you have bouncers inappropriately touching people who try to come into, leave, or communicate with Murphy's Law. It is odd to be treated with so much disrespect while spending money at a venue. I hope the owner's of Murphy's Law understand the serious liability risk of having someone like that work for them. As for a physical description of the perpetrator in question he was around 6'3", 235 lbs, grey goatee, black hair (not natural of course, but from some chemical alteration), probably around 45, deeply insecure, morbidly depressed, high sense of inferiority complex esp. concerned with his career and life choices, low I.Q. probably around 85, I mean not ridiculously low, but just low enough. To the owner's of Murphy's Law, you will hear from me. You sincerely messed up on this one, a written apology from both the venue and the bouncer as well an in person apology from the bouncer while shaking my hand and making eye contact will suffice for my forgiveness. Normally I don't have to spell out how to show respect and rectify situations, but with this unique case I felt I must. Best wishes to anyone who choices to visit this bar. read more

It's great as far as sports bars go. There are TVs on pretty much every side of the bar and you can request a channel from the bartenders which will happily put something on for you. A negative is they do play music while watching games, so it's sometimes a little hard not to get distracted from the game you were watching. I suppose that's good for everyone that doesn't want to be watching sports, but I would prefer to listen to the commentary. Another feature that's awesome during the summer- the massive windows. It's makes the inside bar feel like you're still enjoying the patio outdoors. Their food is not the greatest. Think typical bar food but just a little bit worse. It seems everything they send out is a tiny bit soggy- their nachos, their fries, their wings. It's okay once you've had a few drinks, but you probably wouldn't think it's that great sober. I had their Craic fries- that I actually enjoyed with the ranch dipping sauce, but it definitely wouldn't be my first choice of lunch/dinner. read more

No surprise it was pretty empty on a Sunday afternoon, the day after the St. Patrick's day parade. Our intention was to grab lunch at MacGregors across the street but I guess we hadn't been down this way all winter and they are out of business so we stopped in at ML. The place reeked of stale beer and the floors were sticky from the previous day/night's festivities (we figured with St. Pat's day still two days away they were just waiting until after that to really clean the place). Considering it was pretty empty the waitress had a hard time taking orders and seemed a bit overwhelmed. We got our beers fast enough but had to wait at least another 10-15 mins after that to put in our food order. The Reuben was okay but it seemed like it was almost ground corned beef (scraps from the previous day?) and the club sandwich just okay. Now I remember why it had been years since I ate here. I have been in this pub several times. I always enjoy my food. Wings, of course, but also their other traditional bar fare. We had a Sheppard's pie there many years ago that was good. Depending on when you come, the service can be pretty terrible. But I gotta love a place with at least one cider on tap and a variety of wing sauces. read more

This is more 2.5 stars. We were staying at the East Avenue Inn and Suites and needed a place to grab lunch before heading to a wedding. I'm not sure why there are so many irish pubs in this one area, but there were three on the same block. One person wanted Shepards's pie, so we left the restaurant across the street and came here since they did have it on their menu. The atmosphere is very strange. It looks very "irish pub" but the music is BLARING and it is rock. It was odd and didn't seem to fit with the irish pub feel. The server seemed put off by the fact that we were there. Nothing in particular or specific, just got a real sense of attitude from her. Several of us started with either soup or salad. My french onion soup came out and it had clearly spent no time under the broiler. It also had a very watered down flavor. Other people in the party seemed happier with their choices. And the salad portions were quite large. I ordered the goat cheese salad as my entree. It was HUGE. It had a surprising amount of goat cheese on it. It was tasty, but some of the lettuce didn't seem all that fresh. It was also fairly expensive for a salad with no meat. The people who had the shepards pie did really enjoy it but felt that there was too much mashed potato and not enough meat. Overall, not the best experience but the food was decent enough, just overpriced. If I'm ever in the area again, I'd try someplase else instead. read more

Based on the reviews of this place, I was expecting worse, but this place wasn't as bad as I thought! I definitely agree that the clientele was looking to see and to be seen. I came in with a group of coworkers after work on a Friday, the place seemed pretty popular, and it has a nice outside seating. I thought the interior was cool, and food was ok, typical for a pub. All of the employees were pretty good looking and there were even girls in glittery tanks passing out drink samples. There were a lot of women who were definitely trying a little too hard.... haha I thought they had a great beer selection, unfortunately my bartender didn't know anything about the beers and claimed that she "wasn't a beer person" ... All in all, it was a pretty cool place to have a drink with some friends. The food was eh... but nice place to a drink. However, later in the night? The wait is ridiculously long because the few bartenders they have are flirting rather than serving drinks, and the bouncers won't let you in if you have a hat on or don't like how your dressed. This place presents itself as a transplanted Dublin pub, but treats you like a leper if you show up in a flannel or vest. Nice interior, but gross drinks! My friend and I went last Friday night and both got basic well drinks, vodka cranberry and a gin and tonic, both drinks tasted like bleach and melting plastic. I couldn't even finish half of my drink it was so gross. On top of the drinks being gross, they were served in warm glasses. For a place that *tries* to be high end and hip, they could at least cool down the glasses. This place is always packed on the weekends and I used to come here a lot when I was younger. Now that I'm older (30's) and married with kids I don't get out much anymore. My nights mainly consist of Netflix and wine at home. So on the rare occasion we do go out for a night of drinking we always find ourselves here at some point but we don't stay long. Too old for that, more appealing to the younger crowd. The food however is pretty good. I'll do the occasional lunch date with my girlfriends here, when it's quiet and not full of sloppy drunks (don't worry I'm not hating on the "sloppy drunks", been there, done that). Anyways, the Irish BLT is really good and so are the pretzels. read more

Oh Murphy's. A staple of the East and Alex neighborhood, especially in the summer when you get to see some of Rochester's most dedicated fake n' bakers, and Axe users. I stopped in here for a mild Happy Hour with work last week, and it was before anything was going on, so it was great. They have half priced appetizers during happy hour including wings, potato skins, and pretzels with dipping sauces. The bartender who was taking care of us was very nice. She was able to whip up a tequila concoction for me (rough week) for $6.50. She also compensated one of my colleagues with a double instead of a single because we had to wait a little for her to take care of a group. They host Geeks Who Drink Trivia, and karaoke nights. It gets a little douchetastic on the weekends at night. To many bros and dorito girls for my liking. So agreeing with previous reviews: pop in for a drink or a snack before you go to dinner, to kill some time, or for a happy hour. read more

I went here after midnight on a Friday night. The place was the busiest bar in the neighborhood. It was loud, and sweaty. The clientele was definitely looking to see and "be seen" by whom, I don't know. (It's Rochester, NY people.) Anyway. Our group found a spot in the sweat-box upstairs and waited for a table to open up. I sat under the brightest light ever and enjoyed my Guinness while trying to yell across to my girlfriend. The best part of the night was the attentive and relatively friendly bartenders. Maybe the owners subscribe to the overstaffing theory, but I didn't have to wait long, if at all, to get my drinks. Rating Murphy's Law is such a conundrum for me. I wish we could divide it into two entries: Before Sunset and After Dark. A horde of club-lovers in their early 20s descend upon this place on weekend evenings; there's a line out the door and really no other place I'd like to avoid more. But Murphy's is perfectly pleasant for happy hour and a fine spot to dine, and I adore that the windows disappear in the summer for an open-air experience reminiscent of larger cities with less sidewalk seating. The food seems a tad expensive for bar food, but once you've tasted it, you'll realize that it's actually quite a deal. I got the Ahi Tuna sandwich which was seared to perfection and pink in the middle (ordered it rare, which is how you should order tuna!). The chipotle lime sauce was the perfect compliment to the fish. Only downside was the roll-to-meat ratio was way off, but I've never had a fish-steak sandwich where it wasn't. Sweet potato fries were pretty good. They looked (but didn't taste) a little burnt. Rich with sweet potato flavor, no added spice or even really salt. They were the thicker sort (like steak fries). I might get them again, but the $2 upgrade is a touch steep. The Irish potato skins looked a little mundane ... I didn't have any, but I thought they'd be more like Sheridan's AMAZING Irish nachos. They were just normal. Murphy's doesn't have a cocktail list. Which to me is like saying, "No, thanks. We'd rather not sell you a $9 concoction. Would you care to buy something bland for $5 instead?" The bottom line: the perfect place for happy hour, killing a few hours before a wedding reception, or any other time you're with a large group of people downtown. But if you're past 23, don't dream of setting foot in here after 10; it'll make you want to cringe. read more

Its a good size spot and they aren't lacking in drink choices, but I get the feeling like I'm less of a patron and more of cattle being herded in and shoved off for slaughter. And the screaming downtown-types that frequent here make it an even more less appealing option. They have a pretty strict dress code, I had a friend turned away at the door because he tried to wear his work boots. I understand some people like this bar, but it has nothing for me. read more
